Eastern Shore Sun August 2019 11 Community News 25 years of Landcare history celebrated in Clarence LANDCARE groups from Clarence and nearby areas gathered at Rosny Barn in early July as part of celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Landcare Tasmania. Forty people came along to hear about the 25-year history of Land- care in Clarence. Speakers from local Landcare groups shared their group histories, the issues they have worked to address, their challenges and future. The talks highlighted the important partnership that Landcare groups have forged with Clarence Council, which was rein- forced by Mayor Doug Chipman – himself a long time landcarer – who also spoke at the event. “Clarence has a histo- ry of Landcare, Coastcare and other groups that is older than Landcare Tasmania,” Landcare Tasmania chief executive offi cer Rod Knight said. “Much of this longevi- ty is due to the consistent support by Council over many years, combined with the dedication of numerous volunteers committed to looking after their local patch.” Landcare Tasmania From left , Clarence Landcare Tasmania members Graeme Rainbow, Lorraine Redway, chief executi ve offi cer Rod Knight, Phil Ansti e, Peter Stronach and Anne Marmiom with Clarence Mayor was formed in 1994 and Doug Chipman. was the fi rst independent, state-based Landcare Mr Knight said. local area, and we know Landcare Conference in ADVERTISEMENT organisation in Australia. “We know people that when people feel Hobart from 25 to 27 It currently has 220 get better physical and that sense of ownership, October. member groups, with mental health outcomes they’re more likely to stay The main confer- Alison Standen MP 22 of those groups in when they feel connected involved and continue to ence day is Saturday 26 Clarence. in their communities and deliver solutions into the October, with about 300 “The really important Landcare is just one way future.” people expected to attend Your local Member for Franklin thing in Landcare is the that happens. 28 Eastern Shore Sun August 2019 PET OF THE MONTH COMPETITION WINNER Pet Talk Proudly sponsored by Eastlands Pet Supply On the front paw By Scott Hunt The Dog Grumbler

WE humans are the only creatures who use grammatical language as a primary means of communication. Animals don’t talk and they all differ from us in this way. Most of them share a superior olfactory ability to our own and commu- nicate with smell. Most use body lan- guage too, as well as it’s natural extension: ritual. Animal trainers fi nd it easy to teach a seal, elephant or big cat to climb onto something. Having a quadruped stand on its hind legs is another popular “trick”. Most animals asso- ciate height with status, so an invitation to stand taller is rarely questioned once it is understood. Most animal trainers use sounds — although, not grammar— to convey meaning. Those sounds that work best within a species’ hearing respond to tongue clicks. can hear the difference grunt or nudges me Hi my name is Marco.
