Part 4 contains a variety of folktales that offer views of other peoples and cultures. It chose us. In the late spring of 1990, we received a call from Tom Clavin, who interviewed us for an article he was writing for Child magazine on the subtle messages parents send children that reveal their racial atti- tudes. This began a series of events that told us this book needed to be written and that we should do it. One event was the publication that year of our first book, Different and Wonderful: Raising Black Children in a Race-Conscious Society. Though, as the title indicates, this book was directed at black parents, we received calls from and were approached by people of all races who wanted to know how their children or students could learn to live together and appreciate diversity. During our book tour and in our private practice, we heard this concern over and over. We began the process of thinking about this book, collecting mate- rials, and talking to colleagues and friends. And nearly every day we read a newspaper article or saw a TV news report on the increase of racially motivated crimes. We realized that children were being ex- posed to overt and covert messages that people of different races and cultures could not get along. Another event was the response to the Child magazine article. There were many letters to the editor, most of them from white parents, asking the same questions: "What do we do? How do we raise children who will not he afraid of people with different skin colors?" It was obvious to us that there was an eagerness across the country to produce a new generation that would at the very least not have the fear, mistrust, and suspicions that previous generations had. There had to he a way to tap the energy of those good intentions. A third factor was the discussions we and Tom had over several 11 12Introduction months. He and his wife, Nancy. had two Young children, and we had a young daughter (our son was horn in September1992). soas parents we were concerned about preparing our children to live in a society more racially and culturally diverse than at any time before. Here we were, black people and white people. trying to figure out how our childrenand by extensionallchildren of all colorscould be friends. This sounded like a good idea for a book, and we set to work. Our professional experience was very helpful. particularly a project we had done in 1985 based on a study cohducted by Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark in the late1930sand early1940s.That study used dolls to document the impact of negative racial images on black children. The Clarks asked Youngsters to choose between black and white dolls on the basis of which one they identified with. Sixty_ -seven percent of black preschool children chose the white dolls. In our study, we repeated and expanded on the doll tests, asking questions of both black and white youngsters. Not only did 65 percent of black children choose the white dolls (only a2percent decrease after almost fifty Years!), but 76 percent of the black children and82 percent of the white children said that the black dolls "looked bad" to them. The responses of the black children led to our first book. Yet linger- ing in our minds was the response of the white youngsters.

Bates Heterosexism is a power system in society that promotes the belief that every person is and should be heterosexual (Pharr, 1997). In knowing that heterosexism permeates everyday discourse, this dissertation examines how queer experiences are understood through the lens of heterosexism. Specifically, this dissertation focuses on the queer pregnancy experience, as lesbian motherhood is heavily scrutinized (Hequembourg, 2007). As part of the pregnancy experience, queer women enter healthcare spaces. Both healthcare and medical education promote heterosexism in their education (Zuzelo, 2014; Murphy, 2016) and in practice (Hudak, 2016; Saulnier, 2002). To explore how heterosexism is communicated and resisted in queer pregnancy, I conducted a multiadic interview (Manning, 2015) study with sixteen queer couples who had recently experienced a pregnancy. Through critically analyzing the interviews, two main findings emerged surrounding heterosexism being communicated in healthcare and heterosexism being communicated in public and private relationships.

    Starting the adoption journey: my two cents Every June Catholic Charities holds a picnic at Kinder Farm Park for its adoptive families. This year it was part-play date, part-reunion, as the boys slid, climbed, and explored one of the best playgrounds we’ve visited. In between catching Daniel at the bottom of the slides and pushing Leo on the “rocket ship swing,” John and I had a chance to reconnect with some of the couples we waited with a few years ago, see our social worker friends, and encounter some new families. One couple we met Sunday is waiting to travel to meet their first child, a 3-year-old boy, in China, so they had lots of hopeful excitement—and questions. We talked about attachment, airplane entertainment, and the parenting challenges and joys that we have experienced—recognizing that theirs may be completely different. As one of the Catholic Charities social workers is fond of saying, “Your mileage may vary.” Toward the end of the afternoon, after Leo got to pet a baby calf named Alice and Daniel saw his first rabbits up close, we were cleaning off our picnic table. It had been a practically perfect day—sunny, but with a gentle breeze—and I had just dramatically spilled cranberry juice on what had been my white Capri pants. The boys—who skipped their naps that day—were starting to fade, and we were getting ready to go. As I was gathering trash from the table, a woman approached me and introduced herself. Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s.

The course has been divided into sessions in which old dolls will be studied by type (images, idols, and early playthings; child, doll, and social realities; wooden dolls; wax dolls; papier mache and composition; china and parian; bisque dolls, cloth dolls; celluloid, metal, leather, and rubber dolls; and doll art in America) in basically the same chronological order in which they achieved popularity in the marketplace (1800-1925). The instructor is urged to employ a variety of teaching strategies in the presentation of the material. A mixture of lecture, slides, show and tell, and much student participation is encouraged. Handouts are provided whichcan be given to students at the end of each session. Brief annotated bibliographies appear at the end of each chapter,as well as a selected bibliography at the end of the course. Thecourse has been designed to introduce the beginning doll collector to the techniques employed in the manufacture of old dolls, to help the novice identify a doll of excellent artistic merit, and to acquaint the collector with some of the better known names in doll making.
