In 1664, the eighth Sikh Guru Harkishan Dev resided here during his visit to Delhi. He attained the supreme enlightenment and became 'The Buddha', the enlightened one. Thus Buddhism was born here under the Peepal Tree. The Prince had been wandering in search of supreme peace for long six years hither and thither. But it was at Bodhgaya only where his holy mission was achieved. Bodhgaya has naturally developed into the most sacred spot for Buddhists from all over the world, especially the affluent south East Asia. Rest of the day is of own choosing. MEAL PLAN: Breakfast & Dinner DAY 8: 14 JANUARY, SAT BODHGAYA In the morning proceed to visit to Mahabodhi Temple to offer prayers. This temple is an architectural amalgamation of many centuries and cultures – architectures of the Gupta and later ages, inscriptions describing visits of pilgrims from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and China are some examples. The highlights of the temple include tall stone lotuses, figures of Buddha sitting in different postures on the walls, his footprints on stone, and a colossal golden Buddha in the sanctum sanctorum. The Bodhi Tree is situated inside the temple premises, under which Buddha attained illumination.
