However, it is yet to explore the full potential of such resources to its full advantages. Past efforts of conserving historic and cultural resources in Indian cities and towns have often been carried out in isolation from the needs and aspirations of the local communities as well as the main urban development issues, such as local economy, urban planning, livelihoods, service delivery, and infrastructure provision in the areas. The development of heritage cities is not about development and conservation of few monuments, but development of the entire city, its planning, its basic services, the quality of life to its communities, its economy and livelihoods, cleanliness, and security in sum, the reinvigoration of the soul of that city and the explicit manifestation of the its unique character. Since 2006, Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India has initiated various capacity building initiatives with a focus on development of Indian Heritage cities. Conservation of urban heritage has been often carried out without linkages with the city urban planning processes/tools and local economy and service delivery aspects. Heritage areas are neglected, overcrowded with inadequate basic services and infrastructure, such as water supply, sanitation, roads, etc. Basic amenities like toilets, signages, street lights are missing.

  • Book on Heritage Conservation
FOREWORD By Suresh Kumar; IAS (Retd.) Chief Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Punjab All nations and communities value their heritage and ensure its preservation for posterity, for making aware their future generations about their glorious historic past. Globally, heritage is known to carry enormous value and importance, both socially and economically. Heritage has been leveraged by numerous cities and nations to promote the economy, create employment, and generate prosperity. Considering the role and importance of built heritage, it will be important that these valuable assets, created in the past, are properly identified, preserved, and conserved. India, with a long history spanning over five thousand years, has been rated as one the oldest and most valued civilizations in the world. During its long and historic journey, the country has inherited a huge wealth of manmade environment, created by various communities during its long history. However, due to lack of awareness, the majority of the heritage has either been lost or is facing enormous challenges for survival due to large scale misuse and abuse perpetrated by people and communities. Considering the relevance and criticality of heritage, this eBook titled, ‘Managing Unique Heritage of India – Approaches and Options’, written by Jit Kumar Gupta and Yamini Gupta, is a valuable resource to create awareness among readers, researchers, and students about India’s enormous repository of built heritage and the need and importance to preserve it. The Book, through its various articles, attempts to bring out the entire context of heritage, its identification; issues, challenges and bottlenecks faced by it in its management in face of rising urbanization, globalization and liberalization of economies and the options, which could be exercised to make the entire mechanism of heritage conservation professional, effective and efficient.

Research Proposal My research project here is a study of the socio-religious history of the walled city of Amritsar In India after Independence. The main focus of study is the history of everyday lives and work experiences of people inhabiting the walled city of Amritsar. The study is based on Oral history and ethnographic field work. These experiences are recovered from the voices of the people themselves through recording conversations, memories, and interviews with city communities of merchant, traders, petty retailers and shopkeepers, artisanal groups, street and roadside food sellers, craftsmen, owners of eateries, migrant labourers and religious preachers, members of religious institutions. The subjects of oral conversation and interviews include: religious festivals and traditions, practices and institutions (temples, gurdwaras, mosques and Sufi shrines), business practices and commercial systems, crafts, traditional food, family life, neighbourhood, specialties of arts, and forms of entertainments, popular music and sports and environment and ecological experiences, etc. Also useful in capturing the lived lives of these people my ethnographic field survey along with descriptions in district gazetteers have been important for identifying the diversity of walled city communities, the nature of kinship networks, residential preferences of neighborhoods based on caste and kin, cultural and religious practices, and specialization in specific business and commercial enterprises. The study looks into the question of continuities and changes in social, religious and cultural forms and practices in everyday life of the city inhabitants during the past 70 years. This is important in the context of the contemporary Indian urban landscape which is experiencing huge changes and demographic expansions.
