    Mark Moore Gallery 5790 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232 T. 310.453.3031 F. 310.453.3831 www.markmooregallery.com Tues – Sat, 11am – 6pm Kris Kuksi New Rome Opening Reception: July 9 On View: July 9 – August 20, 2016 Mark Moore Gallery is pleased to present New Rome, an exhibition of new work by Kansas based artist Kris Kuksi. The exhibition marks Kuksi’s second major solo show with the gallery. Over the last decade, Kuksi has built a career creating complex sculptures that blend antiquity with the modern world. Teeming with struggle, conflict, faith, sexuality, and power, each sculpture affords the viewer a ringside seat for a wild spectacle as the spheres of fantasy and reality collide. For this exhibition, Kuksi creates New Rome, a society rife with allegory consisting of works crafted in a hybrid style of baroque and rococo that deeply examine the human psyche. Every sculpture is created from an obsessive collection of cultural flotsam and jetsam – figurines, model parts, collectibles, craft parts, and jewelry. The final pieces, sometimes as large as 10Ft wide, are totemic like shrines that expose Kuksi’s disenchantment with the structures of power and the fallacies of man. Yet, the works are not without their romance, as the wonders of the world are presented through elaborate entanglements of miniature bears, mythical beasts, and glorious figurines. In the Los Angeles Times review of Kuksi’s 2014 exhibition David Pagel writes, “Kuksi’s Baroque confections treat history as primordial soup — a burbling stew of thrilling highlights and epic tragedies that not only resonate in the mind’s eye but also inspire all sorts of emotions — good, bad and otherwise.” In this exhibition, Kuksi gives us the range of human emotion in thousands of pieces, making up one grandiose whole.

    WRAP-UP OF THE FIRST EDITION OF PULSE L.A. 10/4/11 1:14 PM PULSE LOS ANGELES CONCLUDES PIONEERING FORAY INTO LOS ANGELES The debut edition of PULSE Los Angeles concluded yesterday, having broken new ground in the Southern California cultural community. As the third edition of the leading series of PULSE Contemporary Art Fairs, PULSE Los Angeles was launched to support the recent growth of, and interest in, the Southern California art scene. Over 1,500 leading collectors and professionals attending the VIP opening, and the roster of exhibitors, all expressed enthusiasm for the city's potential. Over the course of its four day run at the spacious and elegant Event Deck at L.A. LIVE, PULSE welcomed collectors, including Beth Rudin DeWoody, Susan and Michael Hort, John Phelan, Meryl Rose, Wendy Stark, Lisa Anastos, and Mark Siegel - chair of the Getty board of trustees; board members and curators from the Los Angeles MoCA, LACMA, Getty and the Hammer Museum; philanthropists Helene Galen and Jamie Kabler; curators David McFadden of the Museum of Art and Design, and Trevor Smith of the Peabody Essex Museum; and celebrities that included actress Mila Kunis, and comedians Margaret Cho and Eric Wareheim; as well as other prominent California cultural and business leaders from San Diego to Silicon Valley. In contrast to March 2011's PULSE New York, where buyers gravitated heavily towards brightly colored paintings and similar flat works, Los Angeles patrons favored a more understated palette, opting for muted or greyed tones against large minimalist expanses. This theme was especially prominent in the IMPULSE booth of New York gallery Skylight Projects , which sold seven works by PULSE-prize winning English artist Alexander Massouras.

Oftentimes appearing as unorthodox altarpieces, Kuksi's sculptural wall works have been heralded for their superabundance of detail and narrative – as several theatrical microcosms may converge to produce one sensory fable. Teeming with struggle, conflict, faith, sexuality, and power, his works afford the viewer a ringside seat for allegorical spectacle as the spheres of fantasy and reality collide. Kuksi’s ornate compositions call to mind the excessive intricacies of Art Nouveau or Baroque aesthetics. From a distance, these sculptures are deceptively decorative, but upon closer inspection Kuksi's grotesque realities emerge. In some works, central figures preside over mounting chaos below; infinitesimal creatures, soldiers, and machinery collide with their larger counterparts, and forge a warscape void of time and place. In others, Kuksi achieves a precise structural equilibrium in which his minute armies become a single enormous figure – as if the proverbial Trojan Horse is operated by its most aberrant inhabitants. Reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights,” Kuksi’s characters inhabit a world rife with sin, corruption, and tragedy; an existence not so alien to our own. The artist obsessively collects and arranges a variety of cultural flotsam and jetsam – figurines, model parts, collectibles, craft parts, and jewelry.

GROOT: Well, there's Iris, who's a hairless Chinese Crested; she's our oldest. And then there's Rose and Willie who are Basenjis.
