PATIENT, STEADFAST, LOYAL COMRADE IN THE QUEST PREFACE In harmony with the common purpose of the other volumes which belong to this series, I have made an attempt to trace the genesis and evolution of English biography, and to furnish those who may care to devote themselves to a further study of the subject with sufficient materials in the way of references to sources to enable them to make at least a beginning toward the accomplishment of their desire. I beHeve I am right in saying that this is the first book in the English language devoted to a careful and somewhat exhaustive study of the subject. So far as I know, it is the first of its kind in any language. Beyond brief articles in encyclopaedias and magazines, reviews of biographies in periodicals, and a few short treatises, the great subject of biography has remained untouched. No one can be more conscious than myself of the limita- tions of the discussion herewith presented. I feel that I have made only a beginning in a work that is sure to be continued. Biography as an Art; Biography as Litera- ture; Biography in its Relations to History, Fiction, Psychology, and Medical Science; The Use of Letters in Biography—all these subjects, and more besides, will some day be adequately treated. They can be only hinted at, or touched upon briefly, in a book of this kind. Yet, again, the whole question of a bibHography of biography remains. The lists herewith given in the appendix are not meant to be complete; they but illustrate certain portions of the main text, and are intended to be only suggestive. There is great need of an approximately complete biblio- vii b viu ENGLISH BIOGRAPHY graphy of the subject which will enumerate and evaluate, for the student and the general reader, the really worth- while works. Some one may perform a real service to students by preparing a complete Ust and a critical dis- cussion of the short lives and memoirs of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The preparation of such bibho- graphies will be the work of years, but I have no doubt that it will some day be accompUshed. I have met with much encouragement in the prosecution of this work, and owe a large debt of gratitude to many. The Rev. Thomas Davidson, Nevill Forbes, M.A., Reader in Russian at Oxford University, M. Jules Jusserand, French Ambassador to the United States of America, and Robert S. PREFACE ix It was my great privilege to be associated during the entire period in which I was engaged upon this work with W. Macneile Dixon, Litt.D., Professor of English Litera- ture in the University of Glasgow. The example of his high scholarship " lightly borne," together with the self- effacing kindness of true culture, has been an inspiration to me. He has never failed to have " a heart at leisure from itself " sufficiently to permit him to sympathise with the most trivial interests of my every-day life. To the Court and the Senate of the University of Glasgow I owe thanks for privileges accorded me during the two years which I spent as a Research Student in that institu- tion. INTRODUCTION Doubtless, few people have ever taken the trouble to put the definite query, What is biography? Fewer still, perhaps, have ever attempted to formulate an answer to what seems so easy a question. When we do seek for enlightenment, no host of critics can be summoned to our aid as in the case of such other forms of literature as poetry and prose fiction; for, as yet, biography has not been made to any great extent the subject of critical analysis and discussion. Such criticism as exists is scattered chiefly throughout reviews—often hastily and perfunctorily written—or is contained in a few remarks now and then made by biographers in the course of their narratives. Evidently, it has been generally taken for granted that every one knows what biography is. It is true that definitions are usually unsatisfactory, and that most of us get along very well in using words which we should be puzzled to define logically. Yet not for this reason should the process of defining be set aside as useless, or unnecessary: attempts at definition are help- ful in clarifying thought-processes, and the results are, at least, suggestive, affording points of departure for further discussion. We may see how needful is the attempt in the present instance by the briefest glance at what have usually passed for definitions of biography. Plutarch set before himself the task of " zvriting the lives offamous persons,^ of " comparing the lives of the greatest men with one another" No further thought of expressing more definitely what is meant by lives seems to have occurred to any one until John Dryden, in 1683, introduced the word biography into xi xii ENGLISH BIOGRAPHY the English language and declared it to be " the history of particular merCs lives?'' To say that biography is the history of one man's life is, at least, to be clear and succinct, but the definition is no more than a beginning of the expository process. It is easy enough to say that the history of a man's life constitutes his biography; it is not so easy to declare what should go to make up the history; still less easy to say just what is meant by the life of which the history is to treat. What do we mean when we speak of the life of a man? The expression is common, and every one knows, or thinks that he knows, what the term means. It is clear that notions have differed widely in the past, just as they differ widely in the present. Xenophon believed that he was giving to the world the story of Socrates' life no less truly than Adamnan thought he was presenting " before the eyes of his readers " an image of the holy life of Columba. How different was the ideal of Samuel Parr from that of James Boswell as to what should present the history of the life of Samuel Johnson. Different notions in the minds of the writers were certainly responsible for the different methods employed by Thomas Carlyle in his Life of Sterlings by J. W. Cross in his Life of George Eliot, and by Horace Traubel in his With Walt Whitman in Camden. Thomas Jefferson Hogg and Edward J. Trelawny had the opportunity to do for Shelley what Carlyle did for John Sterling: one has simply to taste of their work to see how far removed it is from that of Carlyle, to recognise that it is scarcely comparable to the Life of Sterling.

    A Medieval Psalter ‘Perfected’: Eighteenth-Century Conservationism and an Early (Female) Restorer of Rare Books and Manuscripts Sonja Drimmer The eighteenth century has an uneven track record in the study of medieval manuscripts. During the later part of the century medieval art found a newly appreciative audience, but it was often the case that where esteem was granted it was for the evidentiary value of illumination. As witnesses to the dress, habits and pastimes of the Middle Ages, manuscripts attracted the emerging breed of antiquaries who reproduced outstanding pictorial examples in engravings. Disseminated in this format, medieval illumination appeared to most audiences in visual translations that deferred to the tastes and prevailing ideologies of the era. At the same time, other antiquaries, like grand tourists of the medieval world, poached miniatures from their native habitats and arranged them in albums and picture frames to augment their private collections.1 Both the victim and the beneficiary of these attitudes is a manuscript in the British Library that has gone unnoticed. 2 A Psalter that was originally produced in London during the second quarter of the fifteenth century, Add. MS. 6894 (henceforth, ‘The Denyer Psalter’) is remarkable not for the damage that was done to it, but for the care taken to rectify this damage and to restore to the manuscript something resembling its former integrity. Interleaved among its six-hundred-year-old folios are parchment replacements from a different historical era, installed by a woman who has been forgotten by history and, in one instance, supplanted in it. However, as a very early conservator of rare books and manuscripts, Eliza Dennis Denyer was a woman well ahead of her time.

This paper is a study of the English antiquarian Francis Douce and his collection of books, prints, drawings, coins, and artifacts. The major theme of the collection—the manners, beliefs, and customs of the world—is connected to three of Douce’s most remarkable collecting interests: children’s books and games; fools and jesters; and the sublime, including his collections of death, demonology, and witchcraft. The collection, divided between the Bodleian Library and the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, remains an invaluable resource for scholars in a wide variety of fields. It is hoped that this paper will emphasize the vision according to which Douce developed a distinctive collection; that it will shed additional light on British collecting and collectors of Douce’s lifetime, 1757- 1834; and that it will serve as a lesson in collecting that might be used by librarians and non-librarians alike.     THE MYTH OF PIERS PLOWMAN Addressing the history of the production and reception of the great medieval poem, Piers Plowman, Lawrence Warner reveals the many ways in which scholars, editors, and critics over the centuries created their own speculative narratives about the poem, which gradually came to be regarded as factually true. Warner begins by considering the possibility that Langland wrote a romance about a werewolf and bear-suited lovers, and goes on to explore the methods of the poem’s localization, and medieval readers’ particular interest in its Latinity. Warner shows that the “Protestant Piers” was a reaction against the poem’s oral mode of transmission, reveals the extensive eighteenth-century textual scholarship on the poem by figures including the maligned Chaucer editor John Urry, and contextual- izes its first modernization by a literary forger inspired by the 1790s Shakespeare controversies. The actions of small landowners and the great landowners are considered according to their contexts: both acted out of opportunism, but the latter’s actions were also related to their personal bonds and interests.

THERE WOULD BE NO BRITISH ACADEMY if there were no individuals who devoted their working lives to the study of the past—its history, its lan- guages and literature, its material remains and its religious, legal and philosophical traditions. These are the studies which, along with the social sciences, the Academy exists to foster. Yet many intelligent people are perplexed, and sometimes even indignant, that human energies should be expended in this way. Here is an irate peer, speaking some years ago in the House of Lords: ‘What a scandal, and what a perversion of resources...when one considers some of the subjects of the research being undertaken at postgraduate level in our universities. I pluck one . Someone in a university somewhere has been beavering away for the past three or four years on a study called “Concepts of Civility in England between 1570 and 1670”. Fundamental, my Lords, to our pioneering economic and technological future!’1 It would be easy to assemble similar expressions of scepticism about the value of humane scholarship, even scholarship as distinguished as Read at the Academy 20 November 2001.     The Transmission and Reception of the Marian Antiphon in Early Modern Britain Volume 1 of 2 Daisy M. Gibbs Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts and Cultures, Newcastle University May 2018 Abstract A substantial proportion of extant pre-Reformation sacred music by English composers survives only in Elizabethan manuscript sources. The evident popularity of this music among copyists and amateurs after it became obsolete in public worship remains largely unexplained, however. Using the Marian votive antiphon as a case study, exemplified by the surviving settings of the popular antiphon text Ave Dei patris filia, this thesis comprises a reception history of pre-Reformation sacred music in post-Reformation England. It sheds light on the significance held by pre-Reformation music to Elizabethan copyists, particularly in relation to an emergent sense of British nationhood and the figure of the composer as a category of reception, in doing so problematising the long-standing association between the copying of pre-Reformation sacred music and recusant culture. It also uses techniques of textual filiation to trace patterns of musical transmission and source interrelationships, and thereby to gauge the extent of manuscript attrition during the sixteenth-century Reformations. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the production of the Ave Dei patris antiphon corpus, particularly the ways in which its meanings were shaped by composers in the decades before the English Reformations. Chapter 3 concerns the transformations undergone by the Marian antiphon during the 1540s and 1550s and following the Elizabethan Settlement. The remaining chapters discuss the post-1559 afterlife of pre-Reformation polyphony.

Warner begins by considering the possibility that Langland wrote a romance about a werewolf and bear-suited lovers, and goes on to explore the methods of the poem’s localization, and medieval readers’ particular interest in its Latinity. Warner shows that the “Protestant Piers” was a reaction against the poem’s oral mode of transmission, reveals the extensive eighteenth-century textual scholarship on the poem by figures including the maligned Chaucer editor John Urry, and contextual- izes its first modernization by a literary forger inspired by the 1790s Shakespeare controversies.
