Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

Today we celebrate Holy Trinity Sunday. We are amazed at undivided unity of Three Divine Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; all are equal, and living in perfect harmony. A week ago, we celebrated Pentecost when the mission of the Holy Spirit began, the mission of the Son on earth was accomplished. Pentecost was a reverse of society life in which people didn’t understand each other, with its origin in constructing the Tower of Babel. People tried to build a society without God, and a tower was built to replace God. As a result, they lost communication with God and in fact they lost communication with each other. They were speaking in different languages. Instead of reaching heaven without God, they came to confusion.

In the gospel reading we discover a great love of God who gave us His Only begotten Son to save us, and gave us a share in the life of the Holy Trinity. In the letter to the Corinthians Saint Paul shows us what is really the way followed by the children of God: “Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.”

As you know, at Our Lady, Mother of the Church Parish we are at Re-Opening Phase I. It allows us to celebrate funerals, marriages, baptisms, and confessions with attendance of up to ten people. To advance into Phase II, we need to host at least three of these ser- vices, besides other requirements. It is a way of checking if our procedures work well. This Saturday, June 6, we start to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It will be at our regular time: Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Only ten people are allowed to be inside the church not counting those who minister. On-line registrations for confession are available on our parish website, you can also call the rectory to reserve a time for you. As we plan to advance into Phase II, we also need more volunteers to manage regular Sunday and weekday Masses. If you can help, please call us or send an email.

May God of peace be with you and with every human heart,

Fr. Andrew

The Most Holy Trinity

Throughout the liturgical cycle of Sundays and seasons, there are certain days that invite us to focus on particular aspects of our faith. Today is such a day, when we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. On this Sunday after Pentecost, we reflect on the mystery of our Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. From the moment of creation, through the encounter of Moses with God on the mountain, through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, our understanding and appreciation of God’s very life has unfolded and deepened. Jesus came into the world to make God’s life and love known, the love of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the love of God that brings us peace.

GOD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS At moments in our lives we may wonder how we know who God is or what God is like. Today’s readings help us to feel secure in placing our faith in God and being assured of God’s unfailing love. When Moses went up the mountain as the Lord had commanded him, God powerfully described himself, “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” Jesus shows us the depths of this life of God. He came not to condemn the world but to save it. As people in relationship with God, we often fail. We walk away from God’s ways, fall into sinfulness, and then, with the Lord’s grace, come to our senses and return. God’s words to Moses and the very life of Jesus show us that when we do so, we can still rely on God’s mercy and kindness, because love is God’s very nature.

CALLED TO BE LIKE GOD We might consider this testimony to the life and love of God and think to ourselves, so what? Knowing that God loves us is reassuring, and may help us place our faith and trust in the Lord, but something more naturally follows—as followers of Jesus, we are called to become more like him. When others look at us, they should be able to say that we are “merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fi- delity.” This gets at the heart of what it means to be a Christian. Our daily decisions, words, and actions are to reflect the merciful graciousness of God. We are able to do this through the indwelling power and presence of the Holy Spirit. In what ways are you becoming more Christ-like? May the grace of the Lord, love of God, and fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you as you renew your commitment to show and share God’s kindness to others!

Today’s Readings: Ex 34:4b–6, 8–9; Dn 3:52, 54, 55; 2 Cor 13:11–13; Jn 3:16–18

Why does God love us so much? And why are we able to love others? The answer to these questions is found in the meaning of todayʹs feast. Trinity Sunday celebrates not so much an idea of three-in-one, as the relationship of the Persons of the Trinity with each other and with us. The idea of the Trinity is based on love. But Godʹs love was so great, God went even further. God created us to be loved by God. Though human love is not perfect, the love of man and woman can produce another person, a child. The three Persons of the Trinity share one life in God. But through baptism we also share in Godʹs life. Just as parents love to see how their children look like them, so God loves to see the divine in us. Our decision to love is a response to Godʹs love, and our ability to love is itself a gift from God. The meaning of life, the universe, and everything is Love, the love of the Trinity for each other and for us. The question now is, how well do we use that gift of Godʹs love by loving each other?

Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, on the murder of George Floyd and its aftermath By Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Sunday, May 31, 2020

The past nights I have watched in great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. But was I surprised? No.

As the saying goes, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a coun- terfeit twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring about the marginalized?

I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our socie- ty. I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do not know what it means to be “other.” But I know there is a way to fix it. And the fix begins when we stop talking about the proportionality of “their” response and start talking about the proportionality of “ours.” Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields are leveled.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of socie- tal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is poison. We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child’s potential with more joy than the soar- ing of a rocket.

I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city. We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today.
