Keynote Address by Bob Mcknight Wednesday, May 13, 8:30 Pm “Je Suis Charlie” Presented By: Bob Mcknight / Co-Founder, Quiksilver WELCOME TO SURF SUMMIT FROM SIMA WELCOME TO SURF SUMMIT FROM SIMA On behalf of the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Board of Directors, welcome to Surf Summit 18 presented by SIMA and BRA! People who have never been to a Surf Summit often ask me about things like the waves, the pool, the bars, etc., thinking it’s just a party in Mexico. People who have been to a Surf Summit also ask me about the waves, the pool and the bars—this is the surf industry, after all—but they also ask me about the speakers, the themes, and whom will be attending, because Surf Summit veterans understand that the mix of fun and function makes our Cabo event the industry tradition that it has become. This year, we at SIMA again strive to find a strong mix of endemic experts as well as speakers from outside the world of action sports. Bob McKnight from Quiksilver will deliver a much-anticipated keynote address nearly 10 years after his oft- quoted “Growing The Pond” keynote address. We’ll be chatting with Dana White, the outspoken president of the UFC on how surfing can be a better run, more visible, and ultimately successful professional sport; Mike Yapp from Google and YouTube is making a repeat appearance at Surf Summit, this time to talk about the role of mobile technology in the digital dialogue; retail guru and industry veteran Shaheen Sadeghi will give his thoughts on how cultural shifts are affecting consumer and retail changes; and punk rock legend Mike Ness from Social Distortion will join us to talk about his life in music, surfing and what the industry can learn from keeping a punk band going for 30 years. As always, we sincerely appreciate you being here and contributing your time and energy for the greater good of your companies and our industry as a whole. We also appreciate the outstanding support of Surf Summit 18 partner and premier sponsor, Surf Expo. A huge thank you as well to sponsors Moss Adams; Ritholz Levy Sanders Chidekel & Fields; NRI Distribution and Imperial Capital for their continuing support of this event. Please join SIMA and BRA in sincerely thanking these partners and be sure to let them know how much we appreciate their support during the Summit. It’s an honor to serve as your SIMA President, and I value your feedback on this event, so please stop me or pull me aside when you see me with your thoughts. SIMA and BRA are proud to offer this annual gathering to our members, and we hope your experience in Cabo this year sends you back to your brand or shop better prepared to reach your goals than ever before. Sincerely yours, Doug Palladini President, SIMA VP/GM Vans North America WELCOME TO SURF SUMMIT FROM BRA WELCOME TO SURF SUMMIT FROM BRA On behalf of the Board Retailers Association and all of the retailers in attendance, welcome to Surf Summit 18! We are thrilled to be partnering once again with SIMA to co-host a one-of-a-kind event of this caliber. This week, we invite you leave behind the daily grind focus on our industry in beautiful Los Cabos, Mexico, an environment like no other! This year’s agenda includes four days and three nights packed full of educational topics with a direct focus on the retailer—while making sure to include time for a little fun, too. From a breathtaking location to an incredible line-up of events, BRA and SIMA have worked hard to make this Surf Summit another exciting and meaningful event. After you arrive and check in with us at the beautiful Barceló Grand Faro Los Cabos hotel, we invite all retailers to our exclusive “meet and greet” reception presented by our special BRA sponsor Surf Expo. It’s the perfect way to kick-off the event and meet all the shop owners in attendance. You’ll find that your days have been schedule to include an ideal mix of networking, education and of course relaxation and surfing. The mornings are free for you to enjoy, while the afternoons are full of motivating presentations and networking events. With a large manufacturer and retailer presence and a strong representation of the industry’s top leaders, Surf Summit 18 is aimed at further strengthening the unity, future, and leadership of our industry. We guarantee you’ll leave Surf Summit with new ideas and fresh inspiration gained from a keynote speaker or a candid conversation with your colleagues. After all, that’s what this event is all about! The topics, schedules, and speakers we’ve selected highlight the industry-relevant successes, challenges, and opportunities the surf industry faces today, and the outcome has the potential to change our marketplace. We’d like to personally thank Premier Sponsor Surf Expo, who does double duty by sponsoring both SIMA and BRA for this partner event. We’d also like to thank Ritholz Levy Sanders Chidekel & Fields as this year’s Workbook Sponsor, Moss Adams as the Welcome Wagon Sponsor, NRI Distribution for sponsoring the Dawn Patrol and Imperial Capital for sponsoring the Cocktail Reception on the final night. Your support enables us to put together this amazing event for our industry, and we always enjoy spending time with you here in Mexico. Most importantly, we’d like to thank SIMA for the continued partnership for Surf Summit and beyond. Never has there been a better event in a more beautiful place where leading retailers and manufacturers can collaborate and communicate. Thank you for being a part of it. A Couple Things to Keep in Mind While Traveling to Mexico While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year, we ask that you take precautions while visiting Cabo. As many of you have seen in the news, there has been an increase in violence in the border towns of Mexico. While these incidents are hundreds of miles away from Cabo, we suggest that you take the following precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable Surf Summit 18: • Use common-sense while traveling in the city by visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours. • U.S. citizens should make every attempt to travel on main roads during daylight hours. • Take toll (“cuota”) roads whenever possible, as they are generally more secure. • Do not display expensive looking jewelry, large amounts of money, or other valuable items. • Make sure your cell phone works in Mexico. • The Tragicomedy of the Surfers'commons
THE TRAGICOMEDY OF THE SURFERS ’ COMMONS DANIEL NAZER * I INTRODUCTION Ideally, the introduction to this article would contain two photos. One would be a photo of Lunada Bay. Lunada Bay is a rocky, horseshoe-shaped bay below a green park in the Palos Verdes neighbourhood of Los Angeles. It is a spectacular surf break, offering long and powerful rides. The other photograph would be of horrific injuries sustained by Nat Young, a former world surfing champion. Nat Young was severely beaten after a dispute that began as an argument over who had priority on a wave. These two images would help a non-surfer understand the stakes involved when surfers compete for waves. The waves themselves are an extraordinary resource lying at the centre of many surfers’ lives. The high value many surfers place on surfing means that competition for crowded waves can evoke strong emo- tions. At its worst, this competition can escalate to serious assaults such as that suffered by Nat Young. Surfing is no longer the idiosyncratic pursuit of a small counterculture. In fact, the popularity of surfing has exploded to the point where it is not only within the main- stream, it is big business. 1 And while the number of surfers continues to increase, * Law Clerk for Chief Judge William K. Sessions, III of the United States District Court for the District of Vermont. J.D. Yale Law School, 2004. Making Waves: Contesting the Lifestyle Marketing and Sponsorship of Female Surfers Author Franklin, Roslyn Published 2012 Thesis Type Thesis (PhD Doctorate) School School of Education and Professional Studies DOI https://doi.org/10.25904/1912/2170 Copyright Statement The author owns the copyright in this thesis, unless stated otherwise. Professional female surfers, in particular, are drawing greater media attention than ever before and are seen by surf companies as the perfect vehicle to develop this global industry further. Because lifestyle branding has been developed as a modern marketing strategy, this thesis examines the lifestyle marketing practices of the three major surfing companies Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy through an investigation of the sponsorship experiences of fifteen sponsored female surfers. The research paradigm guiding this study is an interpretive approach that applies Doris Lessing’s (1991) concept of conformity and Michel Foucault’s (1979) notion of surveillance and the technologies of the self. An ethnographic approach was utilised to examine the main research purpose, namely to: determine the impact of lifestyle marketing by Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy on sponsored female surfers.

GUEST: CLYDE AIKAU 1 LSS 221 (LENGTH: 26:16) FIRST AIR DATE: 5/12/09 Next, meet a surfing legend. He’s a man who grew up in a Chinese cemetery, won big time surfing contests, sailed on the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea, and saved lives as a Waimea Bay lifeguard. He’s a surfing legend. He’s Clyde Aikau, Eddie Aikau’s younger brother. Aloha mai kakou, I’m Leslie Wilcox. Welcome to the first edition of a special two part series of “Long Story Short.” Many know of Eddie Aikau, a waterman who was the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay, a big wave surfer who was lost at sea while attempting to save the crew of the Hokulea in 1978. But in the world of surfing, his brother Clyde Aikau is also renowned. He has won at Makaha, at the old Duke event on the North Shore, and the Eddie Aikau at Waimea. The Duke Kahanamoku Foundation named him a “Waikiki surfing legend.” In the Spring of 2009, Clyde is 59, and he’s not slowing down. He stopped long enough to talk with me about big waves, family and living at the graveyard in Pauoa. When we um, first had the opportunity to um, have a house in the—in the graveyard, um, the deal was that we have to clean … clean the graveyard and cut the grass, and maintain the entire um, graveyard.
