Cienfuegos was part of an exhibition entitled “Place of Mind,” a col- laborative show highlighting cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary dia- logues between a French-American painter, John Bailly, and a Cuban- American poet, Richard Blanco. In their frequent conversations, they showed each other how to look at each other’s work differently. The 3 painting on the cover represents a portrait of Blanco, whose family comes from the town of Cienfuegos, Cuba. As Bailly states: I then drew a portrait of Richard from life as he sat in my stu- dio in Miami. I wrote his name, Blanco, in Braille. But this Braille is two-dimensional, intended to be a symbol of the diffi- culty in communicating. I then drew my favorite line of all his poems, “There should be nothing here I don’t remember.” Richard later shared with me that when I included that line in the drawing, he had not yet realized its significance, just as I had not understood certain parts of my paintings until he shared his thoughts about them. He then wrote a poem using that line as its central theme. This type of conversation between us was, for me, the most wonderful part of our collaboration; we helped each other look at ourselves in a new manner. In the lexicon of Place as Text, the visual artist and the poet removed each other’s blinders. During small group explorations at NCHC Institutes, participants are deliberately assigned diverse groups representing different backgrounds and fields of specialization. While investigating their assigned areas, participants not only strike up con- versations with the people they meet but also with each other. Everyone notices different aspects of the same landscape, helping all of the participants realize that they indeed do have blinders in how they see the world. Machonis Department of Modern Languages The Honors College Florida International University 7 8 FOREWORD BERNICE BRAID LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY-BROOKLYN City as TextTM grew out of a particular configuration: course clusters comprised of several disciplines that were organized to address a theme especially resonant with a given site. It was clear that students needed a mechanism to sensitize them to context and to integrate their reading, discussions, and writing. Multiple components—structured explo- rations repeated over time in various locations; laboratory observations recorded with attention to detail and nuance; formal and informal interviews of people who live, play, work, worship in, and shape their environment—became the experiment that evolved into a versatile exercise we now call Place as Text. Whether “city,” “town,” “village,” or “neighborhood,” any socially constructed enclave we tested yielded sim- ilar and spectacular results: students looked, listened, heard, and saw differently and better when the larger place became a text they sought to decipher in terms of the cumulative information they were compil- ing in their classes. Better yet, they were energized, determined, and persistent about returning to locations, pursuing ideas, and asking questions. They used their forays into people’s arenas to begin to see how oth- ers convert space into place, how others domesticate the enormity of a great metropolis, how others create personal lives unfolded in utterly public places. In this process they also examined how they themselves went about assembling impressions, interpreting interactions, seeing into and beyond the immediate world around them. We who were their instructors in such semesters, or who came to closing symposia to hear students present their findings about local phenomena, began to see the larger implications—and much broader applicability—of these field laboratories. For one, they opened minds in a remarkably short time. This phe- nomenon seemed to be in part because time constraints—no more than three months—forced clarity of focus. “Transformation,” students said, was also a product of their perceptions about themselves as active investigators with the inescapable burden of having to present in a pub- lic forum work derived from their explorations. At a profound level, students experienced themselves as discoverers of unknown territory. Experiments with short- and long-term uses of these field activities— in orientation classes; as preliminary steps in selecting and developing research topics; as mapping exercises in foreign or unfamiliar domestic 9 Foreword cities—yielded similar outcomes. Age group (use of this methodology with high school students as well as with professional development fac- ulty workshops have been reported in NCHC publications for some time) did not weaken the results; heightened attention, careful analy- sis, curiosity, self-awareness, and confidence emerged from each fresh application of CAT.     A Conversation with Robert Fisher of Willard Grant Conspiracy by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 5/2004) A publicist friend of mine drew me aside in cyberspace one day and told me about someone that I needed to cover. I think it was his polite way of saying that I might not be acquainted with this person’s music, but that I ought to be. Of course he was right, as he tends to be in these matters. I was aware that there was a legend of sorts attached to the band called Willard Grant Conspiracy, but only that. It centers around Robert Fisher, the only current founding member of a revolving cast of characters spread the four corners of the globe. WGC has had over thirty members, in fact. (Robert says something like, “If anyone says that they play with us, they probably do…”) It’s set up so that people can contribute when that works in their life, coming in and out as circumstances allow. The band itself is originally from the Boston area. Fisher spent several decades there, and he and longtime cohort Paul Austin recorded four CDs, three put out by Rykodisc, that have become cult favorites: 3 a.m. at Fortune Otto’s (1996), Flying Low (1998), Mojave (1999) and Everything’s Fine (2000). The new album, Regard the End, is on the Kimchee label. It’s a beautiful folk Gothic kind of work, serious material joyfully rendered. After it was completed, Robert moved back to the home of his youth, the Palmdale/Lancaster area of southern CA, where both Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart grew up.

How did you meet up and what have you done musically in the past? Scott: Mike and I came to Seattle in 1989 to be guys in a band and at that we succeeded. Tammy was amongst our first friends when we got here. At the time, we made a fun eclectic album in a band called Albert Figures. The album was called No Bad Dogs and it is actually getting a re-release on GMR alongside the new recordings. There is some fine playing on that record. That was a lively time to be in Seattle. Joe Skyward was our first bass player. He went on to do some other stuff....hmmmm....I can't recall. Also that is where I met the fabulous Sue Orfield. She continues to entertain and amaze in The Tipton's. I never miss their shows when they come to town. In sum, Mike and Tammy and I have been good friends making music for a long long time. I think we expect to go out that way...... Tom: How did this particular project come about, what made you decide here and now? Scott: I have often wondered if I am applying myself correctly. Should I do this or should I do that? This project came about in answer to that query. And, this is a good way to explain our goofy name.

    ruises onon thethe fruitfruit B A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIRVANA & THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR MUSIC by Gary Vehar From the moment Nirvana’s landmark CD Nevermind was released, the world of rock music has never been the same. I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.
