Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread. -

This project analyzed five post- Franco films that dealt with the issue of the Spanish Civil War or Franco regime to determine if they were a counter to official political discourse on the subject. In addition to analyzing the films themselves, research was also done on a variety of official discourse pertaining to the recovery of memory in Spain. Upon examination it became clear that the overarching discourse in Spain is a refusal to address the issues of the past. -

V ol. 21 enero-junio 2011, 125-148 ISSN : 1136-5536 ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ VILLALIBRE Universidad de Oviedo La música de José Nieto para la ‘Trilogía Histórica’ de Vicente Aranda Las especiales características de la música escrita para el cine hacen que, desde su concepción, el compositor se vea obligado a emplear una gran cantidad de estilos y recursos estilísticos que se adapten a la producción en la que se va a inscribir la partitura. La ambientación histórica, el géne - ro cinematográfico o el tono general de la película condicionan desde el principio una banda sono - ra. En este artículo proponemos el estudio de tres de los últimos trabajos de José Nieto en colabo - ración con Vicente Aranda ( Juana la Loca , Carmen , y Tirant lo Blanc ) buscando sus características diferenciadoras, pero también las unitarias, las marcas de estilo que vertebran la carrera del compo - sitor madrileño. De la misma forma, buscaremos la intención del autor a la hora de aportar su músi - ca, así como las funciones que ésta cumple dentro de la película. The special characteristics of film music mean that, from its very conception, composers are required to employ a large number of styles and stylistic resources in order to adapt their scores to the a particular production. The historical setting, cinematographic genre or the general tone of the film condition a soundtrack from the outset. This article examines three of José Nieto’s latest soundtracks for films by Vicente Aranda (Juana la Loca, Carmen, and Tirant lo Blanc) , identifying both the characteristics that distinguish them, as well as those they have in common, the traits forming the backbone of the Madrilenian composer’s career. -
Comrades Come Rally!
Comrades Come Rally! A tremendously evocative, emotional but also uplifting evening was enjoyed by over 80 comrades who rallied to the call to celebrate brigaders from the UK and Ireland who fought to defend democracy in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Housed in the Holywell Music Room, Oxford, the first purpose built 18 th Century concert hall in Europe, professional actors Alison Skilbeck, Time Hardy and jeff Robert, held the audience spell bound with their renditions of brigaders’ poems, correspondence and memoirs of their battles and the heroism of their comrades. Interspersed between readings from Cecil Day Lewis, John Cornford, Charlotte Haldane, Frank McCasker, John Dunlop, Thora Silverthorne, Kenneth Sinclair- Loutit, Jason Gurney, Rev. Robert Hilliard, Gilbert Taylor, Jack Jones, Nan Green, Jim Brewer and Bob Cooney, were music and songs by Na Mara with “The Bite”, “Only for Three Months” and “The English Penny”; “La Carmagnole” and “The Minstrel Boy” by Brenda O’Riordan; “Song for Charlie Donnelly” and “If My Voice On Earth Should Die” by Manus O’Riordan – with both singing “Viva la Quinta Brigada” and a medley based on the flamenco palos of seguiriyas, tangos, taranta and rumba by Marcos, professional flamenco guitarist. The audience gave full vent to their sympathy in singing “The Valley of Jarama” led by Na Mara before the interval and the evening concluded with la Pasionaria’s iconic farewell speech to the International Brigades, read initially in Spanish by Alison, but reading the whole speech in English. Finally, all joined in with a rousing rendition of “The Internationale”. Marlene Sideway, President of the IBMT, thanked the Oxford IB memorial Committee for organizing the fundraiser on behalf of the IBMT. -

7. Biographies of Irish volunteers 1. ANDERSON Samuel, born 06.03.1904 in Banbridge, Co. Down. Emigrated to Canada from Scotland and landed in Quebec 16.10.1927. Painter. Took part in “Regina Riots” in July 1935 when the RCMP attacked the unemployed trekkers, killing two and wounding 100. Anderson joined CPCan in Vancouver in June 1937. Arrived in Spain from Canada 02.10.1937. Went missing on Ebro front, 07.09.1938. Repatriated. Died in Vancouver 25.11.1974. 2. ASH Francis, born 16.04.1909 in Dooey, Downpatrick, Co. Down. Emigrated with his parents to Glasgow as an infant. Tunnel worker, merchant seaman. CPGB since 1933, had served in the Canadian Reserve Rifles. Arrived in Spain 04.01.1938. Disappeared during the March/April retreats, posted as deserter from the line. 3. BAILIE Archibald F., born 28.03.1912 Belfast. Lived at 199 Connsbrook Avenue. Labourer. Arrived in Spain from London 02.10.1937. Taken prisoner in March 1938. Non-communist. Repatriated 1938. 4. BAMBRICK Arthur James, born 14.10.1915 in Longford. A Conversation with Robert Fisher of Willard Grant Conspiracy by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 5/2004) A publicist friend of mine drew me aside in cyberspace one day and told me about someone that I needed to cover. I think it was his polite way of saying that I might not be acquainted with this person’s music, but that I ought to be. Of course he was right, as he tends to be in these matters. I was aware that there was a legend of sorts attached to the band called Willard Grant Conspiracy, but only that. It centers around Robert Fisher, the only current founding member of a revolving cast of characters spread the four corners of the globe. WGC has had over thirty members, in fact. (Robert says something like, “If anyone says that they play with us, they probably do…”) It’s set up so that people can contribute when that works in their life, coming in and out as circumstances allow. The band itself is originally from the Boston area. Fisher spent several decades there, and he and longtime cohort Paul Austin recorded four CDs, three put out by Rykodisc, that have become cult favorites: 3 a.m. at Fortune Otto’s (1996), Flying Low (1998), Mojave (1999) and Everything’s Fine (2000). The new album, Regard the End, is on the Kimchee label. It’s a beautiful folk Gothic kind of work, serious material joyfully rendered. After it was completed, Robert moved back to the home of his youth, the Palmdale/Lancaster area of southern CA, where both Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart grew up.
