Black Marigolds - a thousand year’s old love poem (in translation) written by Kasmiri poet Bilhana Kavi. 4. Robert Louis Stevenson - Scottish novelist, most famous for Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Stevenson met with one of the Wagner family on his travels. He died aged 44 in Samoa. 5. Synge – probably the Irish poet and playwright. 6. Matt Dennis - band leader, pianist and musical arranger, who wrote the music for Let’s Get Away From It All, recorded by Frank Sinatra, and others. 7. Dr Paul de Kruif - an American micro-biologist and author who helped American writer Sinclair Lewis with the novel Arrowsmith, which won a Pulitzer Prize. 8. Ed Ricketts - see Dramatis Personae. 9. The San Francisco State Fair - this was the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939 and 1940, held to celebrate the city’s two newly built bridges – The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and The Golden Gate Bridge. It ran from February to October 1939, and part of 1940. At the State Fair, early experiments were being made with television and radio; Steinbeck heard Gwyn singing on the radio and called her, some months after their initial meeting. Chapter 2 1. Forgotten Village - a screenplay written by John Steinbeck and released in 1941. Narrated by Burgess Meredith - see Dramatis Personae. The New York authorities banned it, due to the portrayal of childbirth and breast feeding. -

...The World According to Samuel Beckett ... Samuel Beckett was a poet, critic, novelist, short fction writer, critic, translator, and dramatist who wrote both in French and English. Classes will focus on his dramatic work via three full length and four short plays. Plays will be considered in reverse chronological order. Beckett’s short plays (Catastrophe, Not I, Footfalls, Play) will be shown in their entirety during classes 1, 2, and 3. Since only excerpts from Happy Days, Endgame, and Waiting for Godot, can be shown (in classes 4, 5, and 6) students are encouraged to read those plays beforehand. The Complete Dramatic Works of Samuel Beckett is available both in paperback and on Kindle and full performances of his long plays are available on YouTube. Also recommended: James Knowlson’s biography of Samuel Beckett, Samuel Beckett: 1906 -1989 Damned to Fame, Bloomsbury, 2014 (available in paperback and on Kindle). Class 1: Introduction to Beckett’s life, works, aesthetics and the nature of his revolutionary drama. Since all of the plays viewed in class were converted from stage to flm the differences between the two genres will be noted and opposing views by flm director Anthony Minghella and reviewer Tom McGurk considered. Class will view Catastrophe, a six minute flm version of Beckett’s play. Directed by David Mamet with Harold Pinter and John Gielgud in leading roles, this brief but complex work is perfect for introducing Beckett’s stage, characters, and dramatic strategy. Catastrophe was written in 1982 in support of Czech dissident Vaclav Havel and political versus universal applications will be considered. -

However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present. -

It is the clash between the presidency as invented and the presidency as it has devel- oped that inspired this series. And it is the importance and power of the modern American presidency that makes understanding the office so vital. Like it or not, the American Presidency stands at the vortex of power both within the United States and across the globe. This Palgrave series recognizes that the Presidency is and has been an evolving institu- tion, going from the original constitutional design as a Chief Clerk, to today where the president is the center of the American political constellation. -

He regularly unites all elements of the production—music, voice, setting, movement, and picturization—to create vibrant dramatic moments. The understanding of structure and character honed in his writing assists in drawing out fully human characterizations. His ability to ‹nd new or Laurents underutilized talent—Jane Fonda in Invitation to a March, Lansbury in 252 Anyone Can Whistle, George Hearn in La Cage aux Folles—signi‹es an astute eye and ensures his lasting in›uence. A very sexual man—his ‹rst gay experience was at thirteen and he was more interested in quantity of partners than quality for many years— Laurents struggled with his homosexuality in psychotherapy, keeping it out of his play Heartsong (1946) and claiming that he would have excluded it as a subtext from Home of the Brave (Laurents, 65, 53). At the same time, he accepted his homosexuality and is proud of how “truth- fully” it was treated in his ‹rst movie, Rope (131). There are biographical aspects of his work to explore (particularly in The Enclave), as well as the- matic obsessions, such as the ‹gure of the complicated, boyish blond (i.e., the major in Home of the Brave, the disillusioned artist in Time of the Cuckoo, the characters played by Hatcher, and Robert Redford’s Hubbell in The Way We Were). Laurents has identi‹ed his own recurrent themes as discovery, acceptance, prejudice, and betrayal (4)—themes with which any homosexual can empathize.
