But the truth is that President Obama helped to bring the country out of recession, saved the auto industry and set the economy on a path to break stock market records. The president acknowledges that more needs to be done, but when the Census Bureau reported that the median household in- come, stagnant for years, had risen 5.2 percent in 2015, Obama rightly regarded the news as import- ant. It was, after all, the largest increase in nearly 50 years. At the same time incomes went up, to a median of $56,516, the number of those in poverty shrank by 8 percent, with 3.5 million fewer people in that category. This is significant economic news and a promis- ing forecast for the future, because it indicates the recovery is finally reaching middle-income earners and the working poor. Additional good news is that a larger percentage of Americans now have health insurance, which is also good for the economy in that it helps that huge industry. It’s true that too many Americans who are em- ployed again after being unemployed are working for less money and fewer benefits than they re- ceived in the past. Clinton has plans to boost the rate of employment and the quality of employment and to put more money into the pockets of working people by saving them money on college educations and expanding lower-cost health care. The country is on the upswing with regard to its economy, and the next president will need to chart a course to continue riding the comeback wave. FIELD HOCKEY, B2 sideline. Time for marquee matchups By Steve Krause ITEM SPORTS EDITOR There are several marquee games on tap for Friday and Saturday as we jump right into Week 2 of the high school football season. Lynn English will have a big test Friday as it gets to tangle with a St. Mary’s team that scored 30 points in the rst quarter last weekend against Tech Boston; and Lynn Tech, which looked very impressive in beating Chelsea last Thursday, will travel up the road to Bishop Fenwick to play Triton, which upset Peabody last week. Saturday, Classical, which still has to be smarting from a last-minute loss last week to Gloucester, will be at Blocksidge Field to take on Swampscott, which came out of last Friday’s win over English with some injury issues; and St. John’s Prep, which had its hands full against Haverhill before taming the Hillies last Saturday, gets to play host to 2015 Division 1 runner-up Central Catholic at the Brother Linus Complex in Danvers. Here is a breakdown of games. TONIGHT St. Mary’s at English At Manning Field (7), last week against Swampscott in an 11-8 overtime loss, the Bulldogs did everything against Swampscott except score. “We moved the ball,” said English coach Chris Carroll, “but we’d get close and something would happen to stall us.” Most often, it was penalties. English had 10, most of them of procedural sort. Carroll said the Bulldogs will be working toward xing that situation in time for tonight. St. Mary’s, for one week, at least, had things go according to plan. The Spartans got huge touchdown runs from Abraham Toe (60 and 55 yards) and Calvin Johnson (32 and 22) in their 42-6 win over Tech Boston. In addition, Marcus Atkins connected on a touchdown pass to ninth-grader Matt Cross. The Spartans won this game last year, 30-0, but “playing English will be a challenge,” said Spartans coach Matt Durgin. “English is a physi- cal team, and very athletic.” Lynn Tech at Triton At Bishop Fenwick’s Donaldson Field (7), the Tigers will match wits against a Cape Ann League team that scored an open- ing-week upset over Peabody. Tech got an eye-opening performance from junior Steffan Gravely in its season-opening 34-0 win over Chelsea. Gravely ran for 124 yards in what was essentially 2½ quarters of action, and scored three touchdowns. The other half of Tech’s one-two punch, Keoni Gaskin, had 101 yards in the game. Quarterback Lewi L’Heureux led Triton in its 23-15 win over the Tanners last week with 14-for-21 passing and two touchdown throws. Saugus at Manchester-Essex At Manchester (7), the Sachems lost to rugged Austin Prep last week, 20-6. However, Dante McGrane eclipsed the 100-yard mark in Saugus’ opener (102) and Mike Mabee Jr. scored its only touchdown of the game. Steffan Gravely had an Robbie Sarmanian ran for two touchdowns as Manchester-Essex eye-opening debut last defeated Northeast Regional last Friday night, 21-12. Then, Triton exploded for 15 points to get the win. Matt D’Amato and Noah Freedman scored for Peabody. But the storm Methuen brewed up thereafter proved much stronger, with a 42-27 win.

Masconomet at Revere At DellaRusso Stadium (7), last week’s 30-28 loss to Medford came down to a two-point conver- sion. The Mustangs made theirs, the Patriots couldn’t convert theirs. Otherwise, it was even-Ste- ven. For Revere, quarterback Eddie Sullivan hooked up with Oscar Lopez for three touchdown passes. Masco lost its opener last week, 26-13, in a non-league game against Melrose. Marblehead at Wake eld At Wake eld High (7), the Magicians picked up where they left off in the regular season last week with an opening-week shutout over Walpole, 27-0. Drew Gally threw for two touchdown passes and Harry Craig ran for two. Wake eld was also shut out in Week 1, losing to Beverly, 24-0. Bishop Fenwick at Dedham At Dedham High School (7), the Crusaders got things off to a promising start last week with a 22-0 blank- ing over Hamilton-Wenham. Colin Norton caught two scoring passes from Cory Bright in the victory. The Marauders of Dedham took it on the chin last Friday night, losing to Med eld, 21-6. Danvers at Lynn eld At Lynn eld High (7), The Falcons scored a rather improbable win over Winthrop last week, 27-7. Many of the Falcons’ players were sick with food poisoning on the day of the game, but they managed to score 20 fourth-quar- ter points to break open a close game. The Pioneers fell last week to Newburyport, 33-6. The only bright spot was Nick Kinnon’s 32-yard touchdown run.
