Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.170 – Almost Spring!!!!! TEST SERIES ABOUT TO BEGIN vs SRI LANKA No Lockie Ferguson, no Matt Henry, no Jimmy Neesham – but the Black Caps do have Will Somerville who could play and who took 7/127 in his previous Test, vs Pakistan, last December Will – bowling for Parnell last season vs Howick Pakuranga when he took 6/10 off 7 overs Will is no stranger to the conditions he will find in Sri Lanka – hot and extremely humid, very difficult to grip the ball in the tropics. But Will succeeded brilliantly in his debut Test vs Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in the U.A.E. – 4/72 & 3/52, 7/127 in the match which NZ won by 123 runs. The pace bowlers who performed so will at the ICC CWC – Ferguson, Henry and Neesham have been omitted and, instead, the Black Caps have taken four spinners – Will (offies), Santner and Patel (left arm orthodox) and Astle (right arm leggies). Sodhi, not chosen, has just had great success in the Canadian T20s. BEST WISHES TO WILL AND TO ALL THE BLACK CAPS!!! New Zealand Cricket Has Come a Long Way Since This As Reported in the NZ Herald of Monday, 14 January 2013 New Zealand dismissed for 47 in Test vs South Africa, hard on the heels of Ross Taylor being replaced as NZ Captain by Brendan McCullum. Since then in Tests – • Brendan McCullum – scored a triple and a double century and hit the fastest century ever in his final Test • Ross Taylor has now scored 6727 runs average 46.71 with highest score 290 • Kane Williamson totals 6139 runs at 53.38 with a highest score of 242* Plus the bowling feats of Tim Southee and Trent Boult! Helping Hollie – A Message From Phil, Our Director of Cricket HELP HOLLIE BATTING GRIP Please see a wonderful initiative from our friends at PLAYERS SPORTS. You will be able to read Hollie’s story on the link below. I would personally encourage you to support Hollie. I have known the family for many years, and I consider John (Hollie’s Dad) a close friend. John and the family have been incredibly strong during this very difficult time and from my perspective have been inspirational and an amazing example of what being a family is all about. If you can help Hollie by purchasing the Hollie batting grip, I would urge you to do so, it is a small request which will make big difference. https://www.playerssports.co.nz/cricket/product/14417/kookaburra-helping-hollie-chevron-grip Thanks Phil Phil Horne Director of Cricket HOLLIE BEATTIE BATTING GRIPS ARE AVAILABLE FROM OUR SPONSOR PLAYERS SPORTS And Mike Wood from Players Sports advises that “New stock is arriving every week so perhaps mention for members to follow our social media for updates (or pop in each weekend to see what’s new!)” Players Sports – Gearing up for the the Season? Just the build up - after the CWC win England played a Test at Lord’s against Ireland and was bowled out for 85, recovered superbly after Ireland lead by 122 on the first innings and then cleaned Ireland out for just 38! Then the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston – England had Australia in real trouble at the start but gained a 90 run first innings lead only to lose, eventually by a massive 251 runs ……………!!!! Lord’s hasn’t always been a happiest ground for England – the only Ashes Tests your Editor has been present at were in 1972. The game at Lord’s was particularly memorable. First, Ross Edwards and Bob Massie made their Test debuts. Both from West Australia, Ross was a good friend – he played 3 seasons for Parnell (Eastern Seconds cf Premier Reserves) in the early 1960s when qualifying as an accountant. Massie was a 2nd cousin to Annie, one of my London flatmates. Ross Edwards Bob Massie photos per EPNScricinfo The Test started in gloomy conditions and remained heavily overcast throughout with rain threatening but never arriving. England won the toss and batted – Geoff Boycott and John Edrich facing Denis Lillee and Massie. Boycott was bowled by Massie for 11 and, from then wickets fell regularly - 3/28 wit 2 to Lillee. Then Massie had Basil D’Oliveiva lbw and bowled Mike Smith - 5/97. Massie was moving the ball prodigiously, in and outswing Tony Greig (54) and Alan Knott (43) held out for a while and Ray Illingworth and John snow both scored 30s. But no stopping Massie – 8 for 84 off 32.5 overs 7 maidens on debut. Lillee took 2/98 off 28. England all out for 272. John Snow and John Price dismissed both Australian openers in no time but Ian (56) and Greg Chappell rescued the innings until the former was lbw to Snow who removed Walters just 2 runs later 4/84. Ross Edwards to the crease and he batted confidently and saw off the pace attack only to be caught off Illingworth for 28. Greig Chappell carried on, helped by Rod Marsh (50) hitting 131. The Australians totalled 308 – their run rate being 2.52 to England’s 2.92. England, batting again, had no answer to the Aussies’ pace and swing – Boycott bowled by Lillee who then removed Luckhurst caught behind. Then Massie took over – Edrich, D’Oliveira fell to him, Mike Smith battled on but the rest tumbled. Smith was finally 9th out for 30 at 81 leaving the last pair, Gifford and Price, to add 35. Massie finally cleaned up having Price caught for 19 – taking 8 for 53 and England dismissed for 116. A Bob Massie’s astonishing figures: 32.5 7 84 8 27.2 9 53 8 Match figures 60.1 overs 16 maidens 137 runs` 16 wickets Needing 81 for victory, Keith Stackpole didn’t mess around – he hit 57* off 79 balls to give Australia an 8 wicket win. Postscript: Bob Massie never hit the headlines again, he lost the ability to bowl his outswinger and soon faded from Test cricket. During the last day’s play, he bowed from the Nursery End and then fielded at either deep third man of fine leg – on the boundary. I was sitting at that end and there were many Aussies and, as the wickets started to tumble, as Massie, having completed his over, returned to his position on the boundardy the crowd would give him a rousing welcome back. So much so that coins were being flung to him, then notes – the outfield was being littered with money. Massie ignored it at first but commonsense took over and he filled his pockets! And Ross Edwards – he took over from Bruce Francis as opener and, at Trent Bridge, hit 170.
