TECHNICAL SYLLABUS

FOREWORD

THE GRADING SYSTEM is designed to test the fundamental elements of Kyokushin Karate. This is to ensure that students will attain core knowledge they can use as a basis to practice and implement the techniques of Karate.

THE TENURE for each grade is given but this is ONLY an indication of minimum time before attempting a grade. Traditionally a student was only allowed to grade by invitation from the instructor. It is preferable that you consult your instructor before a grading. Do not assume that you will automatically be eligible.

DISPENSATION can be applied for prior to a grading, due to injury, age or specific disabilities e.g. if you have had an operation or accident and have limited mobility in a specific area and are unable to perform specific exercises or techniques you MUST let the grading instructor know prior to taking part in any grading. He/she will consult with the technical committee and may set an alternative exercise/technique for you to perform throughout the grading.

Kata Reference Sosai ’s theory is based in three points of stress. These three things (listed below) are fundamental to the desired sense of movement and control. Kata is the formal arrangement of all elements of Karate. In essence they are the catacombs of knowledge. Often, the meaning of application () are esoteric and hard to understand, but with practice (and trial and error) a greater and continual improvement in the study of karate is achieved. Chikara no Kyojaku The combination of power and soft techniques Wasa No Kankyu Rhythm and timing Iki No Chosei Breathing control

Note: One step sparring is a formalised adaption of kumite used to teach the basic elements of attack, block and counter. The senior grades should be able to demonstrate a ‘coup de grace’ technique or final blow technique to show that the attacker has been incapacitated or taken down to the floor 1. Your opponent stands opposite you 2. The instructor will call “Zenkutsu dachi, gedan barai, yoi” (or appropriate stance), both greet, on “kamae te”, the attacker takes the position, the opponent stays in fudo dachi 3. The instructor will then call the attack, and the attacker will then raise their arm to appropriate position (or if in kicking situation stay in keirani) 4. On the count, the attacker steps through performing the same stance and the attack named, the opponent performs the set retaliation e.g. as for No. 1. The attacker takes the position zenkutsu dachi, gedan barai, then puts up a chudan tsuki, then the count is called, he/she steps through and the opponent performs retaliation No. 1. 5. MAIAI – The distance between you and the attacker is most important. Ensure that when you move there is enough room so that if the block is miss-times or incorrectly placed the attacks effectiveness will at least be limited 6. Combined with movement the block should be performed at the correct moment, not too soon (or the attacker will choose another technique) and certainly not too late. This should be followed by a well- timed retaliation 7. These are very formal techniques, so need to be performed in correct stance with power and precision
