TECHNICAL SYLLABUS Confidential Document New Zealand Karate Organisation Kyokushinkaikan Inc. 2008 v1.2 FOREWORD THE GRADING SYSTEM is designed to test the fundamental elements of Kyokushin Karate. This is to ensure that students will attain core knowledge they can use as a basis to practice and implement the techniques of Karate. THE TENURE for each grade is given but this is ONLY an indication of minimum time before attempting a grade. Traditionally a student was only allowed to grade by invitation from the instructor. It is preferable that you consult your instructor before a grading. Do not assume that you will automatically be eligible. DISPENSATION can be applied for prior to a grading, due to injury, age or specific disabilities e.g. if you have had an operation or accident and have limited mobility in a specific area and are unable to perform specific exercises or techniques you MUST let the grading instructor know prior to taking part in any grading. He/she will consult with the technical committee and may set an alternative exercise/technique for you to perform throughout the grading. Kata Reference Sosai Mas Oyama’s Kata theory is based in three points of stress. These three things (listed below) are fundamental to the desired sense of movement and control. Kata is the formal arrangement of all elements of Karate. In essence they are the catacombs of knowledge. Often, the meaning of application (bunkai) are esoteric and hard to understand, but with practice (and trial and error) a greater and continual improvement in the study of karate is achieved.
