November seinen 75. Geburtstag. Seine grössten Erfolge feierte er durch Cover-Versionen seiner Stücke durch andere und mit Film-Musik. Dennoch gehören seine eigenen Aufnahmen zum raffiniertesten, was die Pop- und Rockgeschichte hervorgebracht hat. Der amerikanische Singer/Songwriter und Pianist Randy Newman scheut vor keinem Thema zurück. Er hat Lieder geschrieben über Misanthropen, Fernseh- und Sexsüchtige, über Sklavenhändler und Rassisten, immer wieder erzählt er dabei die modernen USA der letzten 50 Jahre. Dabei gelingt es ihm immer wieder, unübliche Blickwinkel einzunehmen, raffinierte Erzählstrukturen zu finden, um seiner Heimat den Spiegel vorzuhalten. Einfach sind diese nicht, aber meistens lohnt sich ein genauer Blick auf diese oft sehr verführerische Oberfläche seiner kleinen Meisterwerke. In 1969, they were fellow songwriters in the rapidly changing West Coast music scene. Newman was embarking on a career that saw the release of a self-titled ﬁrst album, and he did the orchestral arrangement for Peggy Lee’s hit “Is That All There Is?”. Nilsson had enjoyed success from Midnight Cowboy, Site Search getting on the charts with “Everybody’s Talkin” and “I Guess The Lord Must Be in New York City” He had recorded two albums of original Search material. The song “One” was a huge commercial hit for Three Dog Night. In 1969, Nilsson and Newman elected to do an album of all Randy Newman originals.

Abstract This single-case study explores the use of popular music in response to the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. Using research in sociology of disaster and uses and gratifications theory in mass communication, data collected included original music written in response to the hurricane, major benefit concerts that aired in the wake, and re-appropriated music that developed new meaning when used in conjunction to the case. Analysis yielded that popular music was used to raise awareness, raise funds, and express emotion following the disaster. Prisons and Floods in the United States Interrogating Notions of Social and Spatial Control By Hannah Hauptman, Yale University On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina ripped across the state dream of full social order, both inside and outside Southern Louisiana, rupturing New Orleans’ levees and of the prison. Strict protocols, concrete beds, steel-barred scouring a place for itself among the costliest and most poorly windows and pacing guards imply that this dream has, managed disasters in contemporary history. Til að hljóta „Sir“ heiðurinn þarf drottning Breta að koma að málinu til að þetta gangi eftir og menn öðlist og hafi eftirleiðis og með réttu fyrir framan nafn sitt. Hvort þetta gildi bara um Breska karlmenn þekkir höfundur ekki. Vel má samt vera að konum hlotnist svipaður heiður þó með öðrum hætti sé. Höfundur viðurkennir að vita lítt um Breskar hefðir. Í Bretlandi er „Sir“ nafnbótin heiður. Áþekkan sið er að finna hér með Fálkaorðuna þó ekki fái menn framan við nafn sitt af henni annað nafn sem segir til um heiðurinn en mætti vel athuga.
