Abstract This single-case study explores the use of popular music in response to the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. Using research in sociology of disaster and uses and gratifications theory in mass communication, data collected included original music written in response to the hurricane, major benefit concerts that aired in the wake, and re-appropriated music that developed new meaning when used in conjunction to the case. Analysis yielded that popular music was used to raise awareness, raise funds, and express emotion following the disaster. Prisons and Floods in the United States Interrogating Notions of Social and Spatial Control By Hannah Hauptman, Yale University On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina ripped across the state dream of full social order, both inside and outside Southern Louisiana, rupturing New Orleans’ levees and of the prison. Strict protocols, concrete beds, steel-barred scouring a place for itself among the costliest and most poorly windows and pacing guards imply that this dream has, managed disasters in contemporary history. On that fateful in fact, been realized. “Ain’t Gonna Worry No More”: Depictions of the American South in Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys Kate Coleman, B.A. Submitted in partial requirement for Special Honors in the Department of English The University of Texas at Austin May 2017 _____________________________________________________ Professor Coleman Hutchison Department of English Supervising Faculty _____________________________________________________ Professor Matthew Valentine Plan II Honors Second Reader Abstract Randy Newman’s album Good Old Boys (1974) is a southern concept album. Newman employs several narrators on the album in order to explore multiple perspectives and elements that illuminate southern identity. Newman’s observations result in a view of the South as disenfranchised, defeated not only by their regional prejudice and own mistakes, but by moral hypocrisy and abandonment from the rest of the United States. In implicating the rest of the country, Newman indicates that the struggles highlighted in the South and southern identity are not simply a result of regional dynamics, but indicative of larger American dynamics. What’s more, many of Newman’s observations and commentary withstand the test of time, and maintain relevance to political and social dynamics still present today. In providing biographical, historical, social, and musical context, as well as close-reading the album, the thesis not only explores Newman’s methods, but argues for his larger goals. Rahr 2014 Shelter from the Storm: Asylum in American Narratives of Natural Disaster Alexandra K. Rahr Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto 2014 Abstract America's origin story depicts the nation as sanctuary incarnate. From the Puritans seeking religious refuge to generations of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, to slaves fleeing north across the Ohio River, in the national imaginary America functions as asylum extant -- as the end of the story. This dissertation interrogates this iconic narrative at a critical historical moment. Reading narratives of natural disaster -- accounts of historical drought, flood, and hurricane -- it produces a nuanced theory of refuge which counters the myth of nationalized sanctuary. In an era of normative catastrophe, narratives of 'natural' disaster problematize the discourse of the nation-state as the exemplary guarantor of refuge. This theory of asylum constitutes a vital prehistory for increasingly urgent critical engagement with vulnerable citizenship and the emerging canon of eco-catastrophe narratives. Chapter One examines the Dust Bowl as represented in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939), Woody Guthrie's folk song 'This Land is Your Land' (1940) and documents of the National Park Service (1936). These disaster narratives demonstrate ii that asylum is defined both by an inviolable border, and by imaginative expansion beyond that defensible perimeter to borderless, abstracted, and infinite refuge.
