    Interview with Asa Taccone from Electric Guest By artistically fusing both vintage and contemporary aesthetics, Los Angeles indie soul act Electric Guest brings a unique groove. Frontman Asa Taccone has a velvety and soulful voice that reaches different levels of vocal range while Matthew “Cornbread” Compton creates electronically fueled beats and rhythms. It’s a melding of Motown swagger with modern pop and an abundance of substance. While a lot of their contemporaries seem to lack something, Taccone and Compton convey sounds that come complete in full force. It’s what makes this duo one of the top up-and-coming music groups of the 2010s. With Brooklyn indie pop wonders Chaos Chaos opening things up, Electric Guest will take the upstairs stage at the Columbus Theatre in Providence’s west end on March 4. Before the show I had a chat with Taccone about the band’s latest album, Plural, the songwriting partnership he has with Compton, growing tired of hip-hop, being a former writer for “Saturday Night Live” and what we can expect from Electric Guest for the rest of the year.     Co-writing and co-producing a Grammy Award winning international hit is usually enough to make an artist’s ego visible from space. But for Asa Taccone of Electric Guest, working on Portugal. The Man’s inescapable, Grammy-winning 2017 track “Feel It Still” as well as contributing a track to Carly Rae Jepsen’s Dedicated, was more humbling than ego boosting. “When you work with other artists and performers, you get to see yourself,” says the singer- songwriter, as his Electric Guest compadre and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Compton nods in agreement. “But you also get to have these intimate conversations with bands on their second or third albums, and you realize it’s not fun anymore. It’s hella stressful, and you find yourself over intellectualizing the process. I realized it was exactly the sort of thing I do.” The question was, how to make sure it didn’t happen to Electric Guest. Their third album is the emphatic answer. KIN is not just another collection of songs for Electric Guest. It’s an overdue statement of identity. “We came up in the early 2010s when indie bands were where it was at,” remembers Asa. "We got lumped into that, but it was never really the right fit so it’s been a gradual shift away from that. I think of us as more a pop duo.” Forget what you read in a blog from 2012, and ignore what the “You Might Also Like” algorithms suggest. Electric Guest are proudly, defiantly, more Wham! than Weezer. From top to bottom, KIN feels like a warm, familiar haven, but scratch the surface, and you’ll find Electric Guest have hidden some lyrical weight underneath the positive vibes.

The Popular Selection List is a compilation of non-classical pieces, carefully selected to suit each level. Students in Levels 1 to 9 have the option of substituting a piece chosen from the Popular Selection List for one etude in their level. Students should consult the Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition for detailed information on substitution policies. Students do not need prior approval from the Certificate Program to use a piece from the Popular Selection List as a substitute for one of the etudes from the same level. Each piece has musical value, containing rhythmic or technical challenges pertinent to the level for which it has been selected. The required edition for each selection is clearly identified. These editions have been chosen to ensure that students prepare the appropriate arrangement at each level. Please consult the Bibliography on p. 28 for more information on the collections and sheet music referenced in the Popular Selection List. Da Capo, Dal Segno Signs, and Repeats • When performing repertoire in an examination, students should observe Da Capo and Dal Segno signs, unless stated otherwise in the Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition. • Repeat signs should generally be omitted.     Jae Basiliere Staging Dissents: Drag Kings, Resistance, and Feminist Masculinities he relationship between feminism and drag king performance is compli- cated. While many drag kings hail their performances as feminist, fem- T inists critical of drag king performance often accuse drag kings of valo- rizing hegemonic masculinity, reinforcing patriarchal norms, or engaging in the subjugation of femininity through performances that use masculine tropes. In particular, strains of radical feminism that reify the connection be- tween gender presentation and biological sex are unable to imagine a female- born person’s relationship to masculinity that is not about access to male privilege and the assertion of patriarchal and heterosexual ideologies in les- bian space. This line of thinking initially gained traction within feminist cir- cles through the publication of texts such as Janice Raymond’s The Trans- sexual Empire (1979) and Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch (1971), both of which link the existence of transgender bodies to the ongoing op- pression of women as a class. Recently, the increased visibility of transgen- der celebrities within the public sphere, as well as some recent small gains in transgender rights, have caused a resurgence of these ideas, empowering feminists who question the existence of transgender identities to voice their disdain more openly (Stryker and Bettcher 2016). The radical feminist critique of drag king culture is linked to a tradition of feminist skepticism around the inclusion of transsexual women in feminist politics.1 This line of feminist thinking understands male privilege as some- thing innate and guaranteed to all individuals assigned male at birth: “What goes unrecognized,” says Raymond, “consciously or unconsciously, by women 1 By marking the bodies at the source of this conflict as “transsexual” rather than “trans- gender,” I am acknowledging the particular identity politics that mark this dispute.
