We hope that you enjoy your time here in our beautiful City both on and off the stage. The Pacific Northwest Music Festival continues to grow each year as a result of the endless amount of artistic talent in the Northwest. This music festival provides an opportunity for performers of all ages to gain experience, knowledge, and guidance from the adjudication process. Not only has the festival influenced the development of many young musicians, dancers, and performers in the Northwest, but it has shaped our communities as well. The Northwest can proudly boast that it is the home of many talented and accomplished performers, due in large part to the long-standing Pacific Northwest Music Festival. Thank you to the organizers, who have spent countless hours organizing for this event, the invigilators, who offer their time, expertise, and knowledge to the performers, the coaches and instructors, who have given so much of their time to help the performers recognize their talents, and to each and every performer who has put their heart and soul into their craft. We applaud the performers for their dedication, determination, and courage as they share their talents with us. Sincerely, Carol Leclerc Mayor 3 No Photography or Video/Audio Recording during competition Please, no food or drinks in venues President’s Message 2018 I have been involved with the Pacific Northwest Music Festival since my daughter was 7, about 35 years ago. My involvement (Phase One) changed from that of a parent making sure to be at the right place at the right time with the right music, to (Phase Two) that of a teacher, entering my students and attending their performances. Then it was (Phase Three) becoming a member of the festival executive, attending meetings to learn how the wheels of a large festival turn, and offering my time to schedule classes and do door duty. Now here I am (Phase Four) president of this amazing festival! However, a thread ran thru all those phases in the form of one devoted lady who took on the massive job of collecting and processing all the entry forms - for 40 years. Her name is Irene Kuhar. This year Irene retired, and while she will still be helping out at the 2018 festival in other ways her retirement marks a distinct changing of the guard. It is now time for a new group of volunteers, parents and teachers to move up to phases one, two, and three. This is vital if our festival is to remain such a success, and to continue supporting the performing arts in the Pacific Northwest. We invite those holding one of our programs in their hands to come forward and try out phase one, two, or three, whichever fits. There's nothing to say you have to move all the way to phase four, but you may find enormous satisfaction in the process. Come and be part of the new guard! Bonnie Juniper, PNMF President 2018 4 Please do not take cell phones or pagers into competition areas Please maintain quiet in the audience during competition ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Pacific Northwest Music Festival is an annual event requiring commitments of time, energy, and resources from a wide range of supporters throughout our region. • Interview with Asa Taccone from Electric Guest
Interview with Asa Taccone from Electric Guest By artistically fusing both vintage and contemporary aesthetics, Los Angeles indie soul act Electric Guest brings a unique groove. Frontman Asa Taccone has a velvety and soulful voice that reaches different levels of vocal range while Matthew “Cornbread” Compton creates electronically fueled beats and rhythms. It’s a melding of Motown swagger with modern pop and an abundance of substance. While a lot of their contemporaries seem to lack something, Taccone and Compton convey sounds that come complete in full force. It’s what makes this duo one of the top up-and-coming music groups of the 2010s. With Brooklyn indie pop wonders Chaos Chaos opening things up, Electric Guest will take the upstairs stage at the Columbus Theatre in Providence’s west end on March 4. Before the show I had a chat with Taccone about the band’s latest album, Plural, the songwriting partnership he has with Compton, growing tired of hip-hop, being a former writer for “Saturday Night Live” and what we can expect from Electric Guest for the rest of the year. Rob Duguay: Electric Guest are Plural on February 17. It’s the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut, Mondo, that came out in 2012. Did you feel any pressure while making the new album in the studio and what did you do differently with Plural versus what you did with Mondo? Asa Taccone: There was definitely pressure. It was part of the reason why it took so damn long for Plural to come out.

  • Co-Writing and Co-Producing a Grammy Award Winning International Hit Is Usually Enough to Make an Artist’S Ego Visible from Space
Co-writing and co-producing a Grammy Award winning international hit is usually enough to make an artist’s ego visible from space. But for Asa Taccone of Electric Guest, working on Portugal. The Man’s inescapable, Grammy-winning 2017 track “Feel It Still” as well as contributing a track to Carly Rae Jepsen’s Dedicated, was more humbling than ego boosting. “When you work with other artists and performers, you get to see yourself,” says the singer- songwriter, as his Electric Guest compadre and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Compton nods in agreement. “But you also get to have these intimate conversations with bands on their second or third albums, and you realize it’s not fun anymore. It’s hella stressful, and you find yourself over intellectualizing the process. I realized it was exactly the sort of thing I do.” The question was, how to make sure it didn’t happen to Electric Guest. Their third album is the emphatic answer. KIN is not just another collection of songs for Electric Guest. It’s an overdue statement of identity. “We came up in the early 2010s when indie bands were where it was at,” remembers Asa. "We got lumped into that, but it was never really the right fit so it’s been a gradual shift away from that. I think of us as more a pop duo.” Forget what you read in a blog from 2012, and ignore what the “You Might Also Like” algorithms suggest. Electric Guest are proudly, defiantly, more Wham! than Weezer. From top to bottom, KIN feels like a warm, familiar haven, but scratch the surface, and you’ll find Electric Guest have hidden some lyrical weight underneath the positive vibes.
