Even in Baade ’s window, the sky will look not particularly crowded (G<20) One reads out pixels containing mostly sky background

PLATO 2.0 Science Workshop ESA/ESTEC, 29 Jul 2013 PopulatingPopulating thethe PICPIC

• Large -scale simulations (all -sky) produced by DPAC ’s CU2 team

• Preliminary results: simple cutoffs in Mg and d allow to limit pollution to within <1% (with ALL later than F5V stars identified)

• Can do even better (<0.1%) using Teff/logg info from spectrophotometry

PLATO 2.0 Science Workshop ESA/ESTEC, 29 Jul 2013 CalibratingCalibrating thethe HostsHosts

• Bright (V<13) F -G-K stars (D<200 -300 pc) and not very faint (V<16) M dwarfs (D<50 -60 pc) will have distances determined to (sometimes much) better than 1%

• Very accurate determination of absolute luminosities (for lots of binaries too, many of them eclipsing!)

• -> Improved calibration of radii and masses of the stellar hosts of PLATO -detected planets, particularly at the bottom of the main sequence, where the disagreement between theory and observation is the severe

• -> Reduced uncertainties on planetary parameters, for improved understanding of the systems ’ composition

PLATO 2.0 Science Workshop ESA/ESTEC, 29 Jul 2013 CharacterizingCharacterizing thethe SystemsSystems

• For ALL stars observed by PLATO, Gaia will provide info on low -mass companions out to several AUs

• Many of Gaia ’s planet detections will complement the knowledge of systems detected by PLATO (some components seen only by PLATO, some only by Gaia, some by both!)

• A three -fold goal will be achieved: extended phase coverage, a wider range of the parameter space (M, P, orientation) covered, improved characterization of global architecture of multiple systems
