This assumption, and its supplement in Assumption 23, is useful for SDA historicists when the weakness of their position is highlighted. It enables them to believe in the validity of their interpretation even in the face of insurmountable evidence showing up the fallacies of the SDA position. It cannot be described as irrational; it is © Frank Basten 1990 Version Date: May 19, 2014 Assumption 21 3 probably better to call it an arational assumption, in the sense that no logic can be used to address the shortcomings in this assumption. It is beyond reason. It is blind and will cling to the traditional teachings of the SDA church Řthough the heavens fall.ř It summons their memories of historical events that they feel endorse the SDA position and they take stock in these. It believes the SDA position is correct even though valid objections are raised that have no answer from SDA historicists. These memories will encourage the hope that God will provide answers to these objections in time and that the old positions will stand. For years many of us have looked at the Book of Revelation from strictly the "historical-prophetic" overlay. This overlay has given us much confidence as we have looked at the great prophetic waymarks down through history. http://www.streamofhealing.org/Devotionals/index.htm The type of thinking associated with this assumption are as follows: ŖIt does not matter that you bring arguments to show the traditional SDA teaching on the 2300 days and the seventy weeks is incorrect. When all is said and done, history, the great arbiter of truth, has confirmed the SDA position, and no matter what you say or try and prove, these great historical facts remain.ŗ ŖYou cannot deny the decrees to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple starting in 457 BC; ŖYou cannot deny the coming of Jesus to be anointed by the Holy Spirit in AD 27; ŖYou cannot deny the death of Christ on Nisan 14, 31 AD; ŖYou cannot deny the historicity of the stoning of Stephen in 34 AD; ŖYou cannot deny the legal supremacy of the papal powers beginning in March, 538 AD; ŖYou cannot deny the persecution of Christians by the Roman pagan and papal power throughout the 1260 years up to 1798; ŖYou cannot deny the 1260 years ended exactly to the month, in February, 1798 with the removal of the papal power from its seat in 1798 AD; ŖYou cannot deny that Litchřs prophecy concerning the Ottoman empire was fulfilled to the day on 11th August, 1840; ŖYou cannot deny that the ending of the 2300 year prophecy in 1844 AD and the beginning of a new phase of ministry in heaven was heralded by religious movements both in the Old World and the New World, in accordance with prophecy.ŗ ŖThese great historical facts cannot be changed or undone. They are anchored in time forever as beacons of light, testifying of the veracity of the predictions they are associated with. To deny these facts is to deny the hand of God in history.ŗ This assumption is extremely important in the SDAřs reconstruction of history in that it provides a basis for sense of divine endorsement of the SDA interpretation of these time prophecies. These events in history have a strength in themselves transcending any reasoning to the contrary. In the words of Clifford Goldstein, ŖItřs as solid as world history, as solid as Christ, as solid as the math itself,ŗ (2003, p.112) 1 1 The following statement by Goldstein on the Adventist interpretation of Rome in prophecy expresses this sentiment best: ŖThe Adventist position regarding Rome as the little horn is as firm as world history itself. No matter how politically incorrect this view, we canřt waffle here. Fortunately, we donřt need to.ŗ (2003, p.43) Note: The Adventist position is as firm as world history itself!!! © Frank Basten 1990 Version Date: May 19, 2014 Assumption 21 4 In this paper, I will look at the claims for the major historical dates in the SDA chronography of world history from a prophetic point of view. I will then examine the empirical validity of each of those major events in history and then finally draw a conclusion together. The Method of This Assumption and its Associated Problems. Seventh-day Adventists have created a history of themselves that portrays them as Godřs remnantŔhis special people ordained with a special missionŔand this remnancy is also illustrated in the perspective of a Řtorchbearerř carrying on the torch from other churches. The flip side of this view is that the other churches, cited by SDA histories as being forebearers of aspects of SDA doctrine and teaching, no longer carry the torch. The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

It has survived many attacks and persecutions, and has remained recognized as the subject of international law and international relations in the contemporary world, which makes it unique among religious organizations. Throughout its long history, the Holy See has survived turmoil. First, in its very beginning, the Roman Empire persecuted Christianity, forcing the early Church to be a clandestine organization whose first leaders were either executed or incarcerated. Then, after the Church was recognized, its status significantly improved. In 754 the Donation of Pepin founded the Papal State, making the Bishop of Rome - now known as the pope - the ruler of the independent state. Still, the papacy faced a new set of troubles. Long lasting conflict with the Holy Roman emperors and a power struggle with the kings of France forced the Holy See to temporarily move its seat to Avignon. During its time in Avignon, the Church did not have dominance in European affairs as it did during much of the rest of the medieval period. The Age of Enlightenment brought even tougher times for the Catholic Church, and Pope Pius VII was even arrested and humiliated by Napoleon at the pinnacle of Napoleon’s military might.

    Ancient History Sourcebook: 11th Brittanica: Sparta SPARTA AN ancient city in Greece, the capital of Laconia and the most powerful state of the Peloponnese. The city lay at the northern end of the central Laconian plain, on the right bank of the river Eurotas, a little south of the point where it is joined by its largest tributary, the Oenus (mount Kelefina). The site is admirably fitted by nature to guard the only routes by which an army can penetrate Laconia from the land side, the Oenus and Eurotas valleys leading from Arcadia, its northern neighbour, and the Langada Pass over Mt Taygetus connecting Laconia and Messenia. At the same time its distance from the sea-Sparta is 27 m. from its seaport, Gythium, made it invulnerable to a maritime attack. I.-HISTORY Prehistoric Period.-Tradition relates that Sparta was founded by Lacedaemon, son of Zeus and Taygete, who called the city after the name of his wife, the daughter of Eurotas. But Amyclae and Therapne (Therapnae) seem to have been in early times of greater importance than Sparta, the former a Minyan foundation a few miles to the south of Sparta, the latter probably the Achaean capital of Laconia and the seat of Menelaus, Agamemnon's younger brother. Eighty years after the Trojan War, according to the traditional chronology, the Dorian migration took place. A band of Dorians united with a body of Aetolians to cross the Corinthian Gulf and invade the Peloponnese from the northwest. The Aetolians settled in Elis, the Dorians pushed up to the headwaters of the Alpheus, where they divided into two forces, one of which under Cresphontes invaded and later subdued Messenia, while the other, led by Aristodemus or, according to another version, by his twin sons Eurysthenes and Procles, made its way down the Eurotas were new settlements were formed and gained Sparta, which became the Dorian capital of Laconia.

Special thanks to the editors and or- ganizers of Canta/ἄειδε for their own patience and persistence. %1 For the Athenians, the sea has been a key component of culture, economics, and especial- ly warfare. The Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC) displayed how control of the waves was vital for victory. This was not wholly apparent at the start of the conflict. The Peloponnesian League was militarily led by Sparta who was the greatest land power in Greece; to them naval warfare was excessive. Athens, as the head of the Delian League, was the greatest sea power in Greece whose strengths lay in their navy. However, through a combination of factors, Athens lost control of the sea and lost the war despite being the superior naval power at the war’s outset. Ultimately, Athens lost because they were unable to maintain strong naval authority. The geographic position of Athens and many of its key resources ensured land-based threats made them vulnerable de- spite their naval advantage. Athens also failed to exploit their naval supremacy as they focused on land-based wars in Sicily while the Peloponnesian League built up a rivaling navy of its own.

I usually review the season just gone, the new tours that we ran, the preparatory recces we made, the new tours we are unveiling for the next year, the feedback we have received and our exciting plans for the future. However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced.
