Kranzler ∗ Abstract Dogs have been an integral part of military activities around the world dating back more than two thousand years. They have fended off invasions and helped bring down one of the world’s most notorious terrorist leaders. Yet under current law, they are afforded nearly the same protections as a torn uniform or a jammed rifle, classified in the United States Code as “excess equipment.” Historically, this led to hundreds of dogs being euthanized each year because the United States had no legal obligation to bring this excess equipment home at the end of their deployments. -

Aside from the most valuable role they serve, as our companions, we are learning that our canine friends have a lot more to offer than we ever realized. The role of the dog has expanded greatly over the years from “wardogs” used by the Greeks and Romans to therapy dogs used to treat PTSD in soldiers returning from war today. Dogs now play many important roles in our society and their value to us becomes more apparent with each new talent we discover. Cave drawings show dogs hunting with men during the stone ages. The Greeks and Romans probably were the first users of dogs in warfare, sending formations of attack dogs with spiked armor into enemy lines. The British used two types of dogs to assist in exterminating the native population of Jamestown in 1610: Bloodhounds to hunt them down and Mastiffs to grab them. In early American history, Bloodhounds continued to serve troops for tracking. In Europe during World War I, an estimated 50,000 dogs were trained as sentries, scouts, ammunition carriers, messengers and casualty dogs. By World War II, the Germans had trained nearly 200,000 war dogs. The attack on Pearl Harbor triggered the use of dogs in the United States Air Force as sentry dogs in both Europe and the Pacific, and their service in the military continues today. Dogs have not only proven to be valuable in military service, but their ability to assist us has proven to be priceless in a growing number of specialty areas. Emilie Rita Field 2020 i ii Abstract Widespread and intensive animal agriculture practices generate extreme suffering and have devastating environmental consequences; thus, veganism is a significant and timely social justice movement. On an individual level, becoming and being vegan can have far-reaching emotional and social consequences. This research aims to explore the experiences of the transition to veganism and of being vegan in a hegemonic meat culture. Assuming a Critical Animal Studies standpoint, personal narrative analysis was used to explore the stories of 12 vegans. Apparent was that the transition to veganism consists of various pathways involving a disruption in some form, critical awareness, engagement in moral reflexivity, and ultimately a determination made on the basis of core beliefs. The characteristic of openness and the personal value of justice appear to be critical in facilitating this process. Once vegan, experiences are generally different to participants’ previous expectations of veganism. They report hoping that the sharing of their practice on an individual level can lead to broader social transformation by offering examples of new ways of living and counter-discourses to the norm of carnism. -

John Ford Birth Name: John Martin Feeney (Sean Aloysius O'Fearna) Director, Producer Birth Feb 1, 1895 (Cape Elizabeth, ME) Death Aug 31, 1973 (Palm Desert, CA) Genres Drama, Western, Romance, Comedy Maine-born John Ford originally went to Hollywood in the shadow of his older brother, Francis, an actor/writer/director who had worked on Broadway. Originally a laborer, propman's assistant, and occasional stuntman for his brother, he rose to became an assistant director and supporting actor before turning to directing in 1917. Ford became best known for his Westerns, of which he made dozens through the 1920s, but he didn't achieve status as a major director until the mid-'30s, when his films for RKO (The Lost Patrol [1934], The Informer [1935]), 20th Century Fox (Young Mr. Lincoln [1939], The Grapes of Wrath [1940]), and Walter Wanger (Stagecoach [1939]), won over the public, the critics, and earned various Oscars and Academy nominations. His 1940s films included one military-produced documentary co-directed by Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland, December 7th (1943), which creaks badly today (especially compared with Frank Capra's Why We Fight series); a major war film (They Were Expendable [1945]); the historically-based drama My Darling Clementine (1946); and the "cavalry trilogy" of Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950), each of which starred John Wayne. My Darling Clementine and the cavalry trilogy contain some of the most powerful images of the American West ever shot, and are considered definitive examples of the Western. Ford also had a weakness for Irish and Gaelic subject matter, in which a great degree of sentimentality was evident, most notably How Green Was My Valley (1941) and The Quiet Man (1952), which was his most personal film, and one of his most popular. -
