  • Unprecedented Rainfall in Wine-Growing Regions of Northern Portugal
UNPRECEDENTED RAINFALL IN WINE-GROWING REGIONS OF NORTHERN PORTUGAL Michael G. Sanderson1*, Marta Teixeira2, Natacha Fontes2, Sara Silva2, António Graça2 1Met Office, Fitzroy Road, Exeter, EX1 3PB, United Kingdom 2Sogrape Vinhos, S.A., Aldeia nova, 4430-809 Avintes, Portugal *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Aim: Climate is arguably one of the most important factors determining the quality of wine from any given grapevine variety. High rainfall during spring can promote growth of the vines but increases the risk of fungal disease, while vineyard operations can be disrupted, as machinery may be prevented from getting in the vineyard owing to muddy soils. Conversely, high rainfall during harvest time (August to October) also bears the potential for severe operational disruption and heavy economic losses. To date, the probability of unprecedented rainfall amounts in spring and the harvest season has not been assessed over northern Portugal, specifically the three wine-growing regions of Vinho Verde, Trás-os-Montes and Porto and Douro DOC. In a situation of higher climatic variability, establishing the probable limits of rainfall variation during critical moments of the vine growth cycle will allow for better readiness of farmers as well as higher resilience of the whole value chain. Methods and Results: Observed rainfall totals for northern Portugal were extracted from version 21 of the E- OBS dataset. Monthly rainfall totals were archived from a series of 16 month-long hindcasts produced with the Met Office’s decadal prediction system DePreSys3. These hindcasts begin in November of each year, corresponding to the start of each viticultural campaign.

  • Luis Pato (Bairrada, Curia, Beiras Region, Central Portugal)
LUIS PATO (BAIRRADA, CURIA, BEIRAS REGION, CENTRAL PORTUGAL) www.luispato.com Luis Pato wines are the result of the association of two traditional families from Bairrada, the Pato family and the Melo Campos family. At the Quinta do Ribeirinho (Ribeirinho Estate) the documents reveal a wine production since the 18th Century. Its activity of wine bottling began in the 1970s. Affectionately known as the 'King of Bairrada', Luis Pato is the man who has done most to put this region on the modern winemaking map. He is one of Portugal's most controversial winemakers and is a serious player with 65 hectares in production. From 2006 his vineyards are devoted entirely to Portuguese varieties; all international varieties having uprooted. Pato's passion is the Baga grape, and he says his chalky clay soils are perfect for it. Other varieties like Touriga Nacional are grown on sandy soils, in a meticulously planned estate. Vinho Espumante Maria Gomes – Sparkling White NV CSPC# 725370 750mlx12 12.6% alc./vol. Grape Variety 90% Maria Gomes, 10% Sercialinho Winemaker Luis Pato Vineyards Grown in vineyards planted in sandy soil. Harvest Maria Gomes grape variety is one of the main white grape varieties from Bairrada. Every year, between the middle and the end of August, we pick up for sparkling wine to get high levels of acidity; the second picking is made two weeks later, to the production of the white wine. Vinification/ Fermented in separate stainless steel vats under control temperature for 15 days. The Maturation second fermentation was made in the bottle to keep the flavour of flowers and fruits from the main grape.

  • Van Zellers – Douro Red 2010
VAN ZELLERS – DOURO RED 2010 Van Zellers was officially established as a Port Wine shipper in 1780, by the first generation of Portuguese van Zellers. One of the earliest larger shippers, it was sold to other wine merchants in the middle of the 19th century. It was reacquired by the van Zeller family in the 1930s, when it was incorporated by Quinta do Noval – Quinta do Noval was then owned by my great-grandfather, Luís de Vasconcellos Porto, whose only daughter and heiress, my grand-mother Rita de Vasconcellos Porto, had recently married my grand-father Cristiano van Zeller, descendant of the founder through the eldest male line. Van Zellers & Co. was again sold by the van Zeller family along with Quinta do Noval in 1993, entering a stage of dormancy, with no stocks or commercial activity. In 2006 I finally reacquired the company and its brands. That same year I started producing the “VZ” and “Van Zellers” Douro DOC wines, and in 2009 the Van Zeller Ports, thus opening a new chapter in this more than two-hundred-year-old company. Vintage Info: 2010 was characterized by the intense and big quantity of rainfall during the winter and spring, on average 35% to 49% higher than the average for the region in the last 30 years. This created good conditions to the appearance of oidium and mildium, but preventive treatment was properly in place and none appeared in our vineyards. Maturation followed a very balanced path, with plenty of healthy leaves nourishing the fruit until harvest. Due to these facts, we were able to pick at a very good grape maturity, with well-balanced acidity levels.
