Dr. Setri Nyomi General Secretary, World Communion of Reformed Churches Reading the Bible has been a key characteristic of the Reformed way of life for centuries. Personal and community reading of scriptures in the context of worship has been an important way of how the Reformed live out our affirmation of sola scriptura. Unfortunately how the Word of God has been read has not always been liberating. There are too many instances in which the Bible has been read in a manner that perpetrates violence and exclusion especially of women. Righting Her-Story: Caribbean Women Encounter the Bible Story comes as a refreshing wind to point in the direction of transformation inspired by the rereading of scriptures. While it focuses on one part of the world, the Caribbean, the insights from this book can be applied to all parts of the world. Reading the scriptures in a manner that is consistent with the liberating power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ will free women and men to build communities characterized by justice and genuine love. The stories told and the principles of biblical interpretation recorded in this book can inspire all towards the exciting journey of reading and rereading the Bible for new insights for living in a just and inclusive world. I am grateful to God for those who participated in the workshop in Grenada in January 2011. We thank all those who contributed articles. As this book gets published we take this opportunity to thank God for the life and visionary leadership of the Rev. Patricia Sheerattan-Bisnauth who for eleven years has served the Reformed family worldwide – inspiring and challenging churches in the area of gender justice as well as climate and economic justice. She has been a gift of the Caribbean churches to the worldwide Reformed family, for which we are grateful to God. Geneva, March 2011 Editorial Editorial Rev. Patricia Sheerattan-Bisnauth The Bible plays an influential role in the Caribbean, together with the scriptures of other religions, primarily of Islam, Hinduism and the Bahai faith. Reading the Bible is critical for the Christian and for the Rastafarian communities. Many people find meaning in biblical texts for their lived realities as they seek God’s presence in their lives and for discernment regarding what God is saying to them in these times. Righting Her-Story: Caribbean Women Encounter the Bible Story is a Bible study book on women, which provides refreshing ways to read the Bible, enabling women and men to rediscover its richness and its ability to help them reflect theologically on their faith and experience. It is envisioned as an instrument that will contribute to building the critical consciousness of women and men and in fostering women’s leadership. The book includes stories of women who have played significant roles in their churches and communities. Caribbean women have contributed greatly to the survival of their families and communities by finding ways to resist injustices, bringing healing, providing food, shelter, hospitality, comfort as well as avenues for peace and reconciliation. They have acquired survival skills in situations of poverty, violence and social decay. There are many examples of how women have found ways and means to be resilient in the face of harsh economic times, very often working beyond the boundary of state mechanisms. The Caribbean has a high prevalence of violence against women. There are frequent accounts of rape, maiming and killing of women. Recently churches have begun to be attentive to this issue in small ways but there is still a significant silence and lack of initiative. The process of developing this book took into serious consideration strategies to empower churches to take actions to end violence against women. This issue is addressed in several Bible studies, including four which deal directly with domestic violence, rape and incest. As part of the project to prepare this book, some practical steps were also taken: some churches organised events to raise awareness and to develop a campaign to end violence against women and children. This includes a group of young men from the Reformed churches in Guyana.

Starting with Michener's early life experiences in Doylestown (Pennsylvania), the conversation includes his family's poverty, his wanderings across the United States, and his reading at the local public library. The dialogue includes his education at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), St. Andrews University (Scotland), Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he became a social studies teacher, and Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) where he pursued, but did not complete, a Ph.D. in education. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years. Lists five selected works about James Michener and provides a year-by-year Internet search on the author.(BT) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document.

  • Renegotiating Normalcy: Gender and Marginality in the Fiction and Film of Recessional Japan
Renegotiating Normalcy: Gender and Marginality in the Fiction and Film of Recessional Japan by Marlowe Gardiner-Heslin A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Marlowe Gardiner-Heslin 2014 Renegotiating Normalcy: Gender and Marginality in the Fiction and Film of Recessional Japan Marlowe Gardiner-Heslin Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This thesis explores the various ways economic stagnation has challenged normative gender roles in contemporary Japan. Since the beginning of Japan’s prolonged recession, individuals living lives that do not correspond to the standards of mainstream society have faced increased scrutiny in the mainstream media and popular discourse. Such individuals are often categorized as new phenomena and labeled with terms that emphasize their failure to adhere to economically productive models of selfhood. In order to challenge such categorizations, this paper focuses on contemporary, fictive representations of social nonconformity, while drawing parallels with earlier texts that articulate many of the same problems. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how marginalization of large segments of the population destabilizes the supposedly universal tenets of capitalist modernity and allows for the production of less rigid models of normalcy. ii Acknowledgments I would like to thank Dr. Atsuko Sakaki for her advice at every stage of my studies. Without her constant feedback I would not have been able to complete this thesis, and her patience has been very much appreciated. I cannot imagine that there is a more thoughtful and dedicated supervisor anywhere.

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-09071-2 — The Cambridge Companion to Postcolonial Poetry Edited by Jahan Ramazani Frontmatter More Information the cambridge companion to postcolonial poetry The Cambridge Companion to Postcolonial Poetry is the first collection of essays to explore postcolonial poetry through regional, historical, political, formal, textual, gender, and comparative approaches. The essays encompass a broad range of English-speakers from the Caribbean, Africa, South Asia, and the Pacific Islands; the former settler colonies, such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, especially non-Europeans; Ireland, Britain’s oldest colony; and post- colonial Britain itself, particularly black and Asian immigrants and their descen- dants. The comparative essays analyze poetry from across the postcolonial anglophone world in relation to postcolonialism and modernism, fixed and free forms, experimentation, oral performance and creole languages, protest poetry, the poetic mapping of urban and rural spaces, poetic embodiments of sexuality and gender, poetry and publishing history, and poetry’s response to, and reimagining of, globalization. Strengthening the place of poetry in postco- lonial studies, this Companion also contributes to the globalization of poetry studies. jahan ramazani is University Professor and Edgar F. Cultural Studies and the Un/Popular How the Ass-Kicking Work of Steven Seagal May Wrist- Break Our Paradigms of Culture Dietmar Meinel ‘Steven Seagal. Action Film. USA 2008.’ —German TV Guide The first foreigner to run an aikido dojo in Japan, declared the reincarna- tion of a Buddhist lama, blackmailed by the mob, environmental activist, small-town sheriff, owner of a brand of energy drinks, film producer, writer, musician, and lead in his first film (cf. Vern vii), 1980s martial arts action film star Steven Segal is a fascinating but often contradictory figure. Yet, Seagal is strikingly absent from the contemporary revival of seasoned action-film heroes such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, and Chuck Norris in The Expendables (2010), The Expendables 2 (2012), and The Expendables 3 (2014). In contrast, ‘starring’ in up to four direct-to-video releases each year over the last decade, Seagal has become a successful entrepreneur of B movies. The (very) low production values of these films, however, highlight rather than conceal his physical demise as incongruent, confusing, and Godard-style editing replaces the fast-paced martial arts action of earlier movies. While his bulky body has become a disheartening memento of his glorious past, his uncompromising commitment to spiritual enlighten- ment and environmental protection arguably elevates him above the mere ridiculousness of his films. In this essay, I will explore Seagal and his oeuvre as he moved from ac- claimed martial arts action star to bizarre media figure in order to devise a framework for un/popular culture.
