  • On Sunday 18 August 1940 the Luftwaffe Launched
On Sunday 18th August 1940 the Luftwaffe launched three major air assaults against targets in Southern England. Kenley was one of those targets and the recollections of those on duty on the airfield, the pilots, and those living in the surrounding area are still vivid. 905328 AC2 Charles Gale was on ambulance duty and was sitting in the ambulance with the driver when they heard aircraft approaching. “Getting down from the vehicle we saw eight aircraft flying low in line abreast coming towards us. We saw the bombs begin to drop and ran quickly away from the ambulance and flung ourselves to the ground, as we did so the ambulance received a direct hit and was blown to pieces.” “As we got up it seemed as though the whole of the station was on fire. Hangars and buildings were burning and the noise of the barrage that the Kenley defences were putting up was terrific. We did notice that some of the raiding planes had been hit.” There was a three-ton lorry parked nearby so they got its started and drove round the airfield to seek out casualties. They picked up two wounded and some others who were in a state of shock from the blast and set off to find medical attention. “We drove them to Sick Quarters but when we got there we found that the building had been bombed and was on fire. The Duty Medical Officer, Flt Lt Cromie of 615 Sqn. had been killed by a bomb whilst standing in the doorway of the Sick Quarters shelter.

  • Ops Block Battle of Britain: Ops Block
Large print guide BATTLE OF BRITAIN Ops Block Battle of Britain: Ops Block This Operations Block (Ops Block) was the most important building on the airfield during the Battle of Britain in 1940. From here, Duxford’s fighter squadrons were directed into battle against the Luftwaffe. Inside, you will meet the people who worked in these rooms and helped to win the battle. Begin your visit in the cinema. Step into the cinema to watch a short film about the Battle of Britain. Duration: approximately 4 minutes DUXFORD ROOM Duxford’s Role The Battle of Britain was the first time that the Second World War was experienced by the British population. During the battle, Duxford supported the defence of London. Several squadrons flew out of this airfield. They were part of Fighter Command, which was responsible for defending Britain from the air. To coordinate defence, the Royal Air Force (RAF) divided Britain into geographical ‘groups’, subdivided into ‘sectors.’ Each sector had an airfield known as a ‘sector station’ with an Operations Room (Ops Room) that controlled its aircraft. Information about the location and number of enemy aircraft was communicated directly to each Ops Room. This innovative system became known as the Dowding System, named after its creator, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, the head of Fighter Command. The Dowding System’s success was vital to winning the Battle of Britain. Fighter Command Group Layout August 1940 Duxford was located within ‘G’ sector, which was part of 12 Group. This group was primarily responsible for defending the industrial Midlands and the north of England, but also assisted with the defence of the southeast as required.

The first is the occasion for the publication of this book, a tribute to the men and women who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War 11. The four years between 1991 and 1995 mark the fiftieth anniversary cycle of events in which the nation raised and trained an air armada and com- mitted it to operations on a scale unknown to that time. With Courage: U.S.Army Air Forces in World War ZZ retells the story of sacrifice, valor, and achievements in air campaigns against tough, determined adversaries. It describes the development of a uniquely American doctrine for the application of air power against an opponent's key industries and centers of national life, a doctrine whose legacy today is the Global Reach - Global Power strategic planning framework of the modern U.S. Air Force. The narrative integrates aspects of strategic intelligence, logistics, technology, and leadership to offer a full yet concise account of the contributions of American air power to victory in that war.

  • Operation Freshie (1953)
Operation Freshie (1953) For most university students, “learning” means enrolling in a set number of courses each year and grinding your way through them until, in the fullness of time, you finally have your degree(s) in hand and are off to make the world a Better Place. In my day, the standard academic fare was, for some, complemented by military training programs sponsored by the three armed services. The Royal Canadian Air Force version was known as the University Reserve Training Plan (URTP), and its purpose was to stimulate interest in the Air Force and to ensure a flow of trained university students as commissioned officers for the Regular service or the Reserves. To deliver the program, provision was made in 1948 for the establishment of RCAF (Auxiliary) University Flights at all the major schools across the country. The University of Manitoba Flight was one of the first formed. After a few years, the Flights were elevated to Squadron status. The students’ training program covered three years. They attended lectures during the academic year, with pay, and could look forward to summer jobs as Flight Cadets while receiving flying or specialist training. For up to 22 weeks during three consecutive summers, they could be employed as pilot, navigator, or radio officer trainees, or in eleven non-flying specialist categories that ranged from aeronautical engineering to chaplaincy. Each University Flight/Squadron was to have an establishment of around 100 cadets, with selection being made at the rate of approximately 35 freshmen annually. At the University of Manitoba, a Tri-Service Day was instituted as part of Freshie Week that was laid on shortly after the school year began in September.
