The 1812 Streets of Cambridgeport The Last Battle of the Revolution Less than a quarter of a century after the close of the American Revolution, Great Britain and the United States were again in conflict. Britain and her allies were engaged in a long war with Napoleonic France. The shipping-related industries of the neutral United States benefited hugely, conducting trade with both sides. Hundreds of ships, built in yards on America’s Atlantic coast and manned by American sailors, carried goods, including foodstuffs and raw materials, to Europe and the West Indies. Merchants and farmers alike reaped the profits. In Cambridge, men made plans to profit from this brisk trade. “[T]he soaring hopes of expansionist-minded promoters and speculators in Cambridge were based solidly on the assumption that the economic future of Cambridge rested on its potential as a shipping center.” The very name, Cambridgeport, reflected “the expectation that several miles of waterfront could be developed into a port with an intricate system of canals.” In January 1805, Congress designated Cambridge as a “port of delivery” and “canal dredging began [and] prices of dock lots soared." [1] Judge Francis Dana, a lawyer, diplomat, and Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, was one of the primary investors in the development of Cambridgeport. He and his large family lived in a handsome mansion on what is now Dana Hill. Dana lost heavily when Jefferson declared an embargo in 1807. Britain and France objected to America’s commercial relationship with their respective enemies and took steps to curtail trade with the United States. -

“MANY OF THEM ARE AMONG MY BEST MEN”: THE UNITED STATES NAVY LOOKS AT ITS AFRICAN AMERICAN CREWMEN, 1755-1955 by MICHAEL SHAWN DAVIS B.A., Brooklyn College, City University of New York, 1991 M.A., Kansas State University, 1995 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2011 Abstract Historians of the integration of the American military and African American military participation have argued that the post-World War II period was the critical period for the integration of the U.S. Navy. This dissertation argues that World War II was “the” critical period for the integration of the Navy because, in addition to forcing the Navy to change its racial policy, the war altered the Navy’s attitudes towards its African American personnel. African Americans have a long history in the U.S. Navy. In the period between the French and Indian War and the Civil War, African Americans served in the Navy because whites would not. This is especially true of the peacetime service, where conditions, pay, and discipline dissuaded most whites from enlisting. During the Civil War, a substantial number of escaped slaves and other African Americans served. Reliance on racially integrated crews survived beyond the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, only to succumb to the principle of “separate but equal,” validated by the Supreme Court in the Plessy case (1896). As racial segregation took hold and the era of “Jim Crow” began, the Navy separated the races, a task completed by the time America entered World War I. -

The War of 1812 Magazine Issue 23, February 2015 The Discovery of a Relic From The US Brig Niagara By Brian Rollason The US Brig Niagara was launched in July 1813 for the purpose of protecting the vulnerable American coastline on Lake Erie from the British fleet. She was 110 feet long, weighing 492 tons, armed with eighteen 32 pounder carronades and two 12 pounder long range cannons. Her crew of 155 were professionals ready for a fight. She was involved in several actions during her career. On 10 September 1813, she participated in The Battle of Lake Erie. During the battle the flag ship USS Lawrence commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry was knocked out of commission. Perry, determined to win the fight, lowered the battle flag that represented the last words of his good friend Captain James Lawrence “Don’t Give Up The Ship”, who was killed during the action against HMS Shannon in June of 1813. He subsequently took command of the Niagara winning the battle on that day, capturing six British ships of the Royal Navy and ensuring that America maintained control of the lake for the rest of the war. In 1814 the Niagara turned her attention towards the ship HMS Nancy, a transport vessel of the Royal Navy. The Nancy was running supplies from the Nottawasaga River to Fort Mackinac. The supplies were desperately needed by the British. The Nancy was the last British ship in the region to help defend Canada. In August 1814, the US Brig Niagara escorted by the Tigress and Scorpion located the Nancy which was hiding near the mouth of the Nottawasaga. -

When Touro Synagogue was built, the harbor side of Touro Synagogue this mall was the land end of Long Wharf, colonial Newport’s public wharf. Merchants’ private docks lined the waterfront north and south of Long Wharf. The wharf owned by Aaron Lopez, a wealthy Jewish merchant and founding member of the congregation that built Touro Synagogue, sat just to the south where the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina is now. 2. Brick Market (Thames Street end of Long Wharf Mall). This 3-story brick building at the Washington Square end of Long Wharf Mall was built around the same time as Touro 7 Synagogue and was designed by the same man, America’s first great architect Peter Harrison. 6 5 3. This replica of a 19th-century watering 2 trough in the triangle just opposite the Brick Market was made by metal artists Howard and Mary Newman, members of Newport’s current Jewish community who also restored artifacts in Touro Synagogue. He played a vital role in negotiating the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, which established trade between the United States and Japan, and helped reform the United States Navy. The new changes he implemented, like schooling and officer ranks, are still used in modern America. Nevertheless, the memory of Commodore Matthew Perry has faded from the American public over the decades since his death. He is not taught in American schools, hardly written about, and barely remembered by the American people. The goal of this paper is to find out what has caused Matthew Perry to disappear from America's public memory. -
Maritime Museum and Brig Niagara Tour
MARITIME MUSEUM AND BRIG NIAGARA TOUR COMMODORE OLIVER HAZARD PERRY ON HIS WAY TO HISTORY AND THE FLAGSHIP NIAGARA Kathie Walter has been very active in trying to provide the association with opportunities for a memorable weekend. She is a member of the Flagship Niagara League so she was able to get us discounted fees to visit the Erie Maritime Museum. This is her latest offer for those interested in seeing the museum and Brig NIAGARA on the same visit: On Friday, June 1st, Alpha Association is being offered a guided tour that will include the Erie Maritime Museum and the Flagship Niagara. It will take place at noontime and last about two hours. The cost per person will be $7.00 per person, a bargain for those interested. We were very fortunate that the Flagship Niagara will be at the museum during the weekend of the reunion. Much of the time, it is out touring the Great Lakes serving as an ambassador of Pennsylvania. THE HISTORY OF THE USS NIAGARA FLAGSHIP NIAGARA ‘CROSSING THE T’ MANEUVER Everyone recalls from their grade school text books that Commodore Perry became famous for defeating the British during the Battle of Lake Erie coining the phrase, “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.” Perry commanded a group of nine American warships who engaged a fleet of six British frigates off the coast of Ohio. Perry’s fleet was led by the ships USS LAWRENCE,(named after Captain James Lawrence, who had his own famous iconic plea as he was dying, ‘DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP’), and the USS NIAGARA. -

NAVAL WARFARE ON THE GREAT LAKES, 18 12-1 8 14 ON LAKE ONTARIO T THE time of the declaration of war A in 1812, the British had on Lake Ontario five armed vessels,-the Royal George, the Prince Regent, the Duke of Gloucester, the Seneca, and the Simcoe, carrying over sixty guns; and on Lake Erie. -the Queen Charlotte, the Lady Prevost, the Hunter, the Little Belt, and the Chippewa, with an equal number of guns. But the guns of these vessels were of small size, mostly six-pounders. The ships were manned by what was known as the Pro vincial Marine, a body of fine sailors, who. however, were inexperienced in naval war fare. Commodore Earle was in charge of this force, and under his direction it did good work transporting troops and forwarding supplies. In October, Commodore Isaac Chauncey arrived at Sackett's Harbour to create an American naval force and conduct naval operations.
