ABSTRACT Nadine Kopp. The Influence of the War of 1812 on Great Lakes Shipbuilding. (Under the Direction of Dr. Bradley Rodgers) Department of History, January 2012. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether the War of 1812 influenced ship construction techniques on the Great Lakes. During the War of 1812, much of the fighting in the North American theater of war primarily took place along the Niagara frontier and later along the St. Lawrence River. From the outset, both the Americans and British realized that gaining the upper hand in the conflict depended upon control of the Great Lakes. Critical to achieving the advantage was the development of a significant and powerful inland navy, which led to a shipbuilding race on both shores. The primary question raised surrounding Great Lakes ship construction in the early nineteenth century is whether or not this large scale event, the War of 1812, permanently influenced the way in which ships were constructed once the war was over. To answer this question, this study examines diagnostic attributes of archaeologically examined wrecks from the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain from before, during and after the War of 1812 to find similarities and difference in their design and construction The three time periods have been defined as the period before the War of 1812, from the French and Indian War (1754 to 1763), when British sailing ships first appeared on the Great Lakes, up to 1811; the period of the War of 1812 itself (1812-1814); and the period after the war leading up to the opening of the Welland Canal (1829) and the widespread use of steam engines on the Great Lakes (1830s-1840s). -

George Cloutman's Letter Book G B - Glover Broughton INTRODUCTION The information contained in this volume has been obtained by careful and persistent research from widely distributed sources viz: the Marblehead and Salem and Beverly Custom House Records, original books of the Marble- head Marine Insurance Company, covering five thousand policies running from 1800 to 1840, list of Marblehead Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War (compiled in 1912-13 by the author), old log books, old letter books, old newspapers, list of Privateersmen of 1812 made up by Capt. Glover Broughton in a memorial to the 34th, 35th and 36th Congresses asking for grants of land for services rendered, and from the descendants of the men mentioned. This volume is intended to be a fairly accurate list of the Old Sea Captains of Marblehead, and the vessels in which they sailed, going to and from foreign ports. The list of the names of the men is very nearly complete, but the list of the vessels is not as satisfactory, it being at this late date practically impossible to obtain complete information. African Americans in the Battle of Lake As a result, the northern lakes arena witnessed the hardest and bloodiest fighting of the war. If the U.S. Navy could control the waterways comprising much of the border between the United States and British Canada, then American forces would have ready- made avenues for invasion. Conversely, the lakes and rivers could just as easily serve as invasion corridors for the enemy-vulnerable passageways allowing the British to slash through to the soft underbelly of the United States. Whoever wielded control over the lakes possessed a powerful strategic and tactical advantage. The British, unhindered by the U.S. Navy, used the lakes as transportation routes for troops and supplies during the early months of the war. But the U.S. leadership recognized that warships were needed to form a protective shield along the country's northern and northwestern border, and by late 1812 a furious shipbuilding program had been inaugurated. By the summer of 1813, through new construction and the conversion of purchased merchant vessels, U.S. naval flotillas were cruising Lakes Erie, Ontario, and Champlain and, like their counterparts on the Atlantic, warships on the lakes berthed large numbers of African-American seamen. Black seamen sailed on American warships throughout the Quasi-War with France during the late 1790's and also in the wars against the Barbary pirates during the first decade of the 19th century. In the early years of the Navy the presence of black seamen on board Navy warships was unofficial to say the least. However, Navy captains during this period were responsible for crewing their own ships and most commanders knew that black seamen were just as well trained and disciplined as white seamen; at sea the color of a man's skin counted for much less than did his skills and abilities. -

MILITARY HISTORY —SHEFFIELD’S INVOLVEMENT WITH WARFARE CHRONOLOGY OF AMERICAN WARS (1600 TO 2000) Wars have had a deciding influence on our nation and our communities. Even before holdings to Great Britain. French Africans in Ojibwe Country: Negotiating Marriage, Identity and Race, 1780-1890 by Mattie Marie Harper A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnic Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Thomas Biolsi, Chair Professor Beth Piatote Professor Brian DeLay Fall 2012 Abstract French Africans in Ojibwe Country: Negotiating Marriage, Identity and Race, 1780-1890 by Mattie Marie Harper Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnic Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Thomas Biolsi, Chair This project explores changing constructions of identity for African Americans and Native Americans in the Western Great Lakes region from 1780-1890. I focus on the Bonga family, whose lineage in the region begins with the French-speaking African slaves Jean and Marie Jeanne Bonga. Their descendants intermarried with Ojibwe Indians, worked in the fur trade, participated in treaty negotiations between the Ojibwe and the U.S. government, and struggled to preserve Ojibwe autonomy in the face of assimilation policies. French Africans in Ojibwe Country analyzes how the Bongas’ racial identities changed over four generations. Enmeshed in a network of Ojibwe kin ties, yet differentiated from their Ojibwe kin by their status as a family of mixed-ancestry fur traders, the Bongas gained political and social influence in both Indian and white circles. In addition to their social and legal status as Indians, at various times the labels “white,” “negro,” “half- breed,” and “mulatto” were also applied to them. -

HISTORICAL SOCIETY NOTES AND DOCUMENTS AN ARMY WIFE'S LETTERS FROM PITTSBURGH DURING THE WAR OF 1812 Alexandra Lee Levin are going to live at the garrison, 'tis a very pretty place," We wrote twenty-seven-year-old Mrs. Nancy Bedinger Swearingen from Pittsburgh on August 18, 1813. x Nancy's husband, Captain James Strode Swearingen, had recently been appointed deputy quartermaster general for the western military district.2 Captain Swearingen, son of Josiah Swearingen, a Revolutionary war veteran, was born near Shepherdstown, Virginia, now West Virginia, on February 3, 1782. His career in the United States Army started in1803 when he was appointed a second lieutenant of artillery. At the age of twenty-one he temporarily commanded the company of soldiers sent from Detroit to establish the first Fort Dearborn, later Chicago. After being put in command of Fort Pickering on the Chick- asaw Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi, he was assigned to Pitts- burgh as military agent. In 1806, Swearingen was appointed district paymaster at Balti- more, Maryland, where he remained nearly three years. Furloughed, he visited relatives in western Virginia where he met and courted his first cousin, Nancy Bedinger. Nancy was the daughter of Major Henry Bedinger, a veteran of the Revolution, and his wife,Rachel Strode Bedinger, aunt of Captain Swearingen. Major Bedinger, a wealthy flour and produce merchant, had built a fine home, "Pro- Born in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Levin received a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College. She has published three biographies and numerous articles in such journals as American Heritage, the Maryland Historical Magazine, and the Wisconsin Journal of History. -
