Throop, Co-Chair Social impact entertainment advocates and participants in Hollywood’s nascent ‘social impact storytelling’ scene attempt to leverage the cultural influence of popular media on behalf of prosocial and public health causes: they promote, facilitate consultations on, and attempt to integrate social impact content into entertainment programming. The central questions of this dissertation, based on sixteen months of ethnographic fieldwork, involve what kinds of ideologies of social change and theories of communication shaped participants’ everyday practices, structured advocate-industry relationships, and influenced the popular narratives that emerged from advocate-Hollywood collaborations. The project sought to understand how so- called “social impact” topics – primarily issues regarding public health and the social determinants of health -- were being formulated, resisted, transformed, and articulated through ii and alongside popular narratives. Of particular interest were how the practices and ideologies operating in these contexts might relate to larger cultural discourses about social justice and social change, the potentialities of narrative, contemporary humanitarian ideals, and ideas about responsive ethical subjectivity in relation to others’ stories. Through an ethnographic investigation of social impact media advocacy in contemporary Hollywood, this dissertation explores the landscape and configuration of contemporary social impact media/social impact storytelling movements, their antecedents, recent evolutions, and some of the implications of their current trajectories. iii The dissertation of Jennifer Austin Walton-Wetzel is approved.     THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ENTERTAINMENT MASS MEDIA IN CHANGING BEHAVIOR By William N. Ryerson, President, Population Media Center There is strong evidence that mass media, particularly entertainment broadcast media, have played a significant role in a number of countries in bringing about changes in reproductive behavior and in promoting adoption of other health measures. Radio and television soap operas in Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, St. Lucia, and Tanzania have been documented by independent research in their massive effects on audience attitudes and behavior with regard to HIV/AIDS avoidance and use of family planning (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). One of the advantages of using serial dramas, as opposed to documentaries or single-episode dramas, is that they allow time for the audience to form bonds with the characters and allow characters to evolve in their thinking and behavior with regard to various issues at a gradual and believable pace in response to problems that have been well illustrated in the story line. Just as important, entertainment programs forge emotional ties to audience members that influence values and behaviors more forcefully than the purely cognitive information provided in documentaries. In addition, the emotional context of a melodrama improves retention of lessons learned by the audience, in much the same way that we remember the details of where we were on September 11, 2001 much more clearly than on an ordinary day. As described in the social learning theory of Stanford University psychologist Albert Bandura, vicarious learning from others is a powerful teacher of attitudes and behavior (7).

One Mullah said that they used to not talk about things regarding sexuality, but that now they see that it needs to be talked about for women to have respect, good treatment and decency. Journal, July 2010 Osnes Population Media Center (PMC) is an international NGO using entertainment education (EE) programming to improve the health and well-being of people and our planet. The organization aims to: educate people about the benefits of small families; encourage the use of effective family planning methods; elevate women’s status; prevent exploitation of children; and promote avoidance of HIV/ AIDS. PMC programs also address other high-priority issues of specific relevance to each of the 18 countries in which they are situated. The reach of PMC’s work extends beyond the boundaries of those select nations through PMC’s interre- gional trainings and the many tools they have generated that are widely respected and used throughout the world. The mission of PMC is: to work with mass media and other organizations world- wide; to bring about stabilization of human population numbers at a level that can be sustained by the world’s natural resources; to lessen the harmful impact of expanding levels of humanity on the earth’s environment; and to help large numbers of disadvantaged people live better and move out of poverty.
