  • Student Project
ASSR MUSIC PRODUCTION CURRICULUM Audio Tools for Schools ALAN Parsons’ Student project www.artandscienceofsound.com A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS usic is a precious resource. Being able Mto capture or record music for future generations to enjoy is one of music’s most valuable skills. Today Music Production is something anyone can do, armed with a cellphone and a decent internet connection. Sure you’ll soon want a microphone; and then another mic, and then another mic. Speakers help of course, and pro software gives you the sort of power that only major recording studios like Capitol and Abbey Road had back in the day. Speaking of which, back in the day when we were trying to carve out our careers, there weren’t any alternatives to a recording studio. And there weren’t any schools you could go to to learn about recording. Alan got a job as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road and Julian signed with Charisma Records as a writer and keyboard player. We listened, observed, tried, occasionally failed, Since 2010 we’ve dedicated ourselves to lifting the lid on what but eventually started to make sense of this magical thing we call it takes to record music; unravelling some of the mysteries ‘making records.’ behind and in front of the glass. Learning Music Production Today, even though physical records might seem to have gone and Audio Engineering isn’t rocket science (though Alan does the way of the Dodo, there’s still a thrill in creating music… have strong connections with NASA these days) and it’s not art creating something that didn’t exist fifteen minutes ago.

  • Record Dreams Catalog
RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores.

  • Eight Miles High / Feel a Whole Lot Better (1966 / 1965)
Eight Miles High / Feel A Whole Lot Better (1966 / 1965) Gene Clark / The Byrds (Yes, a double-header – two songs, two artists - though one guy featured in both. So, a couple of cracking tunes by Gene Clark. As Gene had left The Byrds by the time Eight Miles High came out, there are no videos of him with the Byrds playing this song. Therefore I’ve also added I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better, as there’s a great YouTube video of the original five Byrds storming through this folk-rock classic. Enjoy!) “Eight miles high And when you touch down You'll find that it's Stranger than known” Since Elvis changed the world in 1956 with Heartbreak Hotel, which artists do I put in my top five? Who do I keep returning to in order to make sense of a complicated life, to lift my spirits when down and convince myself that there is beauty, poetry and rhythm a mere button press away? It is, he dryly observes, a rather obvious list. I don’t apologise for that. Elvis, le roi du rock ‘n’ roll. The Beatles, naturally. The Stones, yeah, of course the Stones. But The Byrds too. They had a much shorter duration than the others, but they are up there for me. Right at the top. And if you know your Byrds, you know the late, great, Gene Clark - songwriter and focal point of the original Byrds. Since his early – but perhaps not unexpected – death in 1991, Gene Clark has enjoyed somewhat of a posthumous revival.

  • 1967: a Year in the Life of the Beatles
1967: A Year In The Life Of The Beatles History, Subjectivity, Music Linda Engebråten Masteroppgave ved Institutt for Musikkvitenskap UNIVERSITETET I OSLO November 2010 Acknowledgements First, I would like to express my gratitude towards my supervisor Stan Hawkins for all his knowledge, support, enthusiasm, and his constructive feedback for my project. We have had many rewarding discussions but we have also shared a few laughs about that special music and time I have been working on. I would also like to thank my fellow master students for both useful academically discussions as much as the more silly music jokes and casual conversations. Many thanks also to Joel F. Glazier and Nancy Cameron for helping me with my English. I thank John, Paul, George, and Ringo for all their great music and for perhaps being the main reason I begun having such a big interest and passion for music, and without whom I may not have pursued a career in a musical direction at all. Many thanks and all my loving to Joakim Krane Bech for all the support and for being so patient with me during the course of this process. Finally, I would like to thank my closest ones: my wonderful and supportive family who have never stopped believing in me. This thesis is dedicated to my grandparents. There are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed. Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain. All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living, In my life I've loved them all.
