Schr-3S Program & Abstracts Separation Science Section October 26th, 2018 Cluj-Napoca, Romania SChR CENTENARY On January 24, 2019, 100 years have passed since the founding of the Romanian Chemical Society (SChR) by a group of chemists who were meeting at the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Bucharest. For two decades, the Society has developed a rich and fruitful activity, followed by a long hibernation due to the war, the post-war period or the assumption by the Romanian Academy of specific objectives and tasks of a scientific society. For a long time this Society organized its monthly actions and conferences in a beautiful building of the Faculty of Chemistry, located very close to today's Parliament. After 1992, the scientific life of the Romanian Chemical Society was brought back to life, continuing the essential/main/basic objective of its statute, which provided for the promotion of chemistry by all means. Objectives were defined, organizational actions undertaken, international contacts established and developed. Society branches have been formed in most regions of the country. A permanent objective of the Romanian Chemical Society was to periodically organize scientific conferences / congresses with interesting topics and to give an international feature to the debate on chemical issues. Affiliated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in 1921, the Society soon received the mission to organize the 6th IUPAC Congress in 1925, a mission accomplished with great success, according to the documents of the time. Since the beginning of its existence, the Romanian Chemical Society has published and is currently publishing a journal entitled Bulletin of the Chemical Society, founded in 1919, to publish the results in the field of chemistry which later became a journal that presents the scientific life, the actions of promoting chemistry and organizing activities. A Romanian scientific journal called the Bulletin of Pure and Applied Chemistry, with the title virtually identical to that of the official scientific journal of IUPAC, published with a remarkable regularity original scientific results in international languages. Following the model of the great international centralizing journals, it is also worth mentioning the initiative of the Society to notify all the original papers published in our country, accompanied by the exact quote of the original paper, in the Romanian Chemical Bibliography. In this context, the Separation Science Section of the Romanian Chemical Society organizes the "SChR Centenary" Symposium. WELCOME to this event! Chemist, mineralogist and politician. • The Development of Analytical Chemistry in Romania
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY IN ROMANIA GRIGORE POPA Department of Analytical Chemistry, University of Bucharest, Romania ABSTRACT A brief history is given of the development of analytical chemistry in Romania. Aspects concerning the teaching of analytical chemistry in Romanian univer- sities as well as the achievements of the scientific research in this field are presented. The earliest beginnings of analytical chemistry in the territory of our country can be traced back to identify themselves with those of chemistry itself. The more so as analytical chemistry is one of the branches of chemistry with the widest range of applications in all fields of economic life. Its theoretical character materializes in the study of the properties of materials in terms of concentration P =f(c)and the development of analytical methods, whereas the practical character resides in the analytical techniques themselves. In fact, the study of materials with a view to using them has been the concern of man since the earliest times, a concern that was manifest in this country, too. In the following I shall try to outline the major stages in the development of analytical chemistry and of its teaching in our country. Certain skills, such as the potters', the smiths' or metal workers' (with the Dacians), etc. requiring practical chemical knowledge have long been familiar to the country's inhabitants. But the lack of written documents would make it impossible in practice to state a precise date for the beginning of the development of chemistry in our country. In feudal times, with the exception of boroughs, a number of trades sprang into being, closely connected with the processing of material products, which helped develop chemistry to a certain extent.

  • The Society of Physical Sciences (1890-1910)
DOI: 10.15503/jecs20152.20.32 Ethics A former Romanian scientific society: The Society of Physical sciences (1890-1910) IAVORENCIUC GEORGE ANDREI Babeü-Bolyai University, Faculty of History Strada Mihail KogĆlniceanu 1, Cluj-Napoca 400084, Romania E-mail address: [email protected] Abstract The Society of Physical sciences (phisycs, chemistry and mineralogy) has been an important Romanian scientiÞ c society since its establishment, in 1890 until the middle of the twentieth century. This paper seeks to provide an analysis of its activity in the Þ rst two decades of existence, a less studied period, namely how its enterprises contributed to the dissemination and spread of the latest scientiÞ c ideas within Romania’s culture. The society was founded at the initiative of some of the most proeminent Romanian scientists of that period and, until the end of the nineteenth century, it expanded its sphere of activity by including sections on mathemathics and natural history. Therefore, its activity, exempliÞ ed by public conferences, presentation of members’ personal scientiÞ c endeavors, intellectual debates or scientiÞ c missions, reß ected the general development of physical sciences in Romania in that epoch. This research is based mostly on a close scrutiny of society’s scientiÞ c journal. Keywords: Romania, science, scientiÞ c society, culture, 1890-1910 Introduction “The society of physical sciences (physics, chemistry, mineralogy)” was constituted in the year 1890, in the broader context of the relative scientiÞ c development of the Romanian Kingdom. Romania was set in a modernization process, that had begun in the middle of the nineteenth century. Consequently, the country was attempting to develop a scientiÞ c life according to the contemporary exigencies.

ROMANIA 558 ROMANIA ROMANIA 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1. General Overview Romania is a unitary republic in southeastern of Central Europe, in the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula, halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ural Mountains, being placed at a distance ranging between 1050 km and 2800 km against the continent extremities. The country is bordered by Hungary (west), Serbia (south-west), Bulgaria (south), Ukraine (north), Moldavia (north- east) and the Black Sea (east), along 245 km of coastline. The country covers an area of 238,391 square kilometres and is the continent’s 13th largest country in area. Romania's topography is dominated by the great arch of the Carpathian Mountains, which enter northern Romania via Ukraine and take a curving course, first southeastward and then westward across the central part of the country. The Carpathians then turn south again and cross the lower course of the Danube River, which forms Romania's southern boundary with Bulgaria. The southern and eastern portions of Romania consist of fertile plains that are drained by the Danube and its tributaries.
