Time has flown since the departure of our first group of IFP Indonesia Fellows in 2003 and this year we already have 168 alumni spread out in Indonesia working to fulfill their commitment in realizing that vision. Indonesia will be enriched by their experience and their leadership. Their efforts to improve the lives of those they touch will be the beginning of a better Indonesia. Congratulations for this initial of the first one hundred IFP Indonesia Alumni Profiles. There will be more to come. Through reading their stories, the program’s soul of opening access to the underserved and the underrepresented will continue beyond the program. One day at a time, one person at a time, we will continue until we reach the ideal world of justice and prosperity for all. • Digitising Migration Heritage: a Case Study of a Minority Museum Randi
MedieKultur | Journal of media and communication research | ISSN 1901-9726 Article Digitising migration heritage: A case study of a minority museum Randi Marselis MedieKultur 2011, 50, 84-99 Published by SMID | Society of Media researchers In Denmark | www.smid.dk The online version of this text can be found open access at www.mediekultur.dk Museums are increasingly digitising their collections and making them available to the public on-line. Creating such digital resources may become a means for social inclu- sion. For museums that acknowledge migration history and cultures of ethnic minority groups as important subjects in multiethnic societies, digitisation brings new possibili- ties for reaching source communities. This article presents Web projects conducted at Museum Maluku in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The article focuses on the museum’s experiences with cross-institutional Web projects, since digitisation of the museum’s collection was initiated through collaboration with major national heritage institutions. These collaborative projects furthermore have raised the visibility of Dutch-Moluccans as a part of Dutch national history. The article also discusses how source communities through digital participation can become involved in building cultural heritage. Based on the case study of the Museum Maluku, it is argued that in order to design an appro- priate mode of user participation as well as a sense of ownership, it is crucial to take memory politics of source communities into account. 84 Randi Marselis MedieKultur 50 Article: Digitising migration heritage: A case study of a minority museum Digital heritage and source communities Museums in Western Europe are challenged by increased cultural diversity within the pop- ulations that make up their potential audiences, and especially museums of cultural his- tory are now acknowledging cultures of ethnic minority groups as an important subject in multiethnic societies.

Contents 7 Foreword 9 The canon of the Netherlands 112 Main lines of the canon When we, as individuals, pick and mix cultural elements for ourselves, we do not do so indiscriminately, but according to our natures. Societies, too, must retain the ability to discriminate, to reject as well as to accept, to value some things above others, and to insist 6 on the acceptance of those values by all their members. [...] If we are to build a plural society on the foundation of what unites us, we must face up to what divides. But the questions of core freedoms and primary loyalties can’t be ducked. No society, no matter how tolerant, can expect to thrive if its citizens don’t prize what their citizenship means – if, when asked what they stand for as Frenchmen, as Indians, as Britons, they cannot give clear replies.

  • Gekomen Om Terug Te Gaan Maar Gebleven

Ashworth August 2008 Preface This thesis report is written in the contexts of concluding the master study of Cultural Geography, at the faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen. Here, I would like to thank all my respondents, under which I specifically thank Hilda Tutuarima-Wieringa who played an important role as key-person in arranging interview meetings. Specific mention is also deserved for Trien Solisa who made it possible for me to experience several meetings and ceremonies within the Moluccan community. Further I would like to thank my family and friends who joined me during field research and helped motivate me in the writing process. Finally I would like to thank my supervisors, dr. I have found the research interesting, enjoyable and satisfying to complete and I hope that you as reader shall have the same experience. Laurieke F. Zijp August 2008, Groningen Summary The central question that is dealt with in this thesis is: ‘ How are ethnic minorities, in particular the Moluccan population, represented in local heritage and the heritage policies within the Northern region of the Netherlands’? Hereby, heritage of ethnic minorities is centralised. Heritage is defined as a set of meanings we, the society, give to a certain object in the present’ (Ashworth et.
