A veteran Afghan police commander who was blinded in an attack by one of his subordinates has been named police chief in his home district in southwest Uruzgan province. Shah Mohammad Shah joined the Afghan National Police 13 years ago and spent time fighting against the Taliban on the front line in Trenkot, a district in Uruzgan where Taliban fighters routinely target police checkpoints. However, he was betrayed by one of his own men a year and a half ago in the Meher Abaad area, when the man claimed to want to show him the location of an enemy minefield. Dost Mohammad Nayaab, the provincial spokesperson of Uruzgan, said that when they reached the minefield, the man told Shah that “it’s time for you to pay for what you have done.” He then detonated a blast that killed four of Shah's men and wounded both of Shah's eyes. He traveled to India for medical treatment two times, but doctors were unable to restore his vision. So Shah returned to Afghanistan and considered leaving the po- EMERGENCY lice force. However, the province’s military council had a different plan. CALLS Nayaab said the council decided to assign Shah as the police chief in his birthplace: Dehrawood, a district where Taliban forces have made gains in recent months and are in danger of seizing control. Police The Uruzgan provincial spokesperson said Shah's example was in- spiring to the police force, and he is still an expert in neutralizing IEDs. 100 - 119 Despite being blind, Shah Mohammad said he would continue to fight for his country. The World Bank is reducing its forecast for the global economy this year — again. The aid agency predicted Tues- day that the world economy will expand 2.4 percent this year, down from the 2.9 percent it expected in January and unchanged from a tep- id 2015. “The global economy is frag- ile,” said World Bank economist Ayhan Kose, who helped produce the forecast. “Growth is weak.” In the years since the world began recovering from the 2008 fi- nancial crisis, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have repeatedly proved too opti- mistic about the world economy and have had to downgrade their previous forecasts. The World Bank’s latest 2016 forecast is more pessimistic than the IMF’s outlook for 3.2 percent global growth this year, a projec- tion made in April. Since then, it’s become clearer that low commodity prices con- tinue to vex many developing coun- tries whose economies depend on exports of those commodities. End of an era: Black Sabbath announces last-ever show Legendary rock band Black Sabbath has marked the 2016 tour as its last ever. The group’s farewell US tour shows will take place on November 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, November 10 in Houston, Texas and November 12 in San Antonio, Texas, reported Roll- ing Stone. After November 12, the band will head to Latin America for seven more dates spread across Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. The group’s final show is set for Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 4. “It doesn’t get any easier, physically,” singer Ozzy Osbourne said about ‘The End’ tour. Osbourne said that touring was taking a toll on the members’ health. “I don’t know how the Stones [band] do it,” he added. German music festival halted after lightning strikes injure 71 In January this year, Osbourne contracted a si- nus infection that forced Black Sabbath to postpone several concerts. “This time, we thought we got one more tour left in us — let’s go out and do it while we can,” said bassist Geezer Butler. “We’re all aware of our mortality these days. So while we still can all play really well, we decided we’d do one more tour and go out on top.” Separately, former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward has formed a new band, Day of Errors, mark- ing his first project since his 2015 album with the Bill Ward Band, Accountable Beasts. In a note on his Facebook page, Ward described the Day of Errors sound, saying, “We play loud, hard, with overtures of gut-kicking heavy, heavy parts.” The group fea- tures Ward on drums and vocals, Joe Amodea on guitar and vocals and All Hail The Yeti’s Nick Diltz on bass and lead vocals. The trio will also be joined by percussionist Walter Earl and Ward’s son, Aron, on keyboards. MONDAY. JUNE 13, 2016 AFGHANISTANTIMES The towering USMNT prospect who came of age with his best game ever The game was only 11 minutes old. Paraguay had broken away from the halfway line, three-on-one. And even that one – John Brooks – was a step behind the pack. As they bore down on Brad Guzan's goal, Brooks was closing ground and tracked towards Miguel Almiron, the ball carrier.
