I will miss the “Music on the Cul-de-sac” but we have plenty of winter/spring events planned that will keep us warm! Volleyball and Basketball are planned for this winter as well as some other fun activities and we are already hard at work on our Spring Soccer programs as well! We miss our seniors and hope to have our Senior Center open soon, we just want to make sure it is safe for all to enjoy! We are continuing to improve our communications with the City of Reynoldsburg, including our new e- mail blast “Reynoldsburg Connects”, improved social media contacts and we are even broadcasting our City Council, Planning and Building and Zoning meetings for the first time, as well as our community commission committees, including the Arts and Beautification Committee, Welcome and Diversity Committee, Military Recognition Committee, and our Transportation and Traffic Committee. We hope that with better communication we can be more responsive to the needs of the community. You are welcome to come to City Hall and talk with me about our amazing city and all it has to offer, I can’t wait to share some of our big plans for 2021! Reynoldsburg has a bright future ahead of us and we are just getting started!

Program Low Enrollment Cancellation Policy: All classes must have a minimum number of students in order to be held. When a class/program is canceled due to low enrollment or other circumstances, you will be offered a full refund. Registration for programs (art, drama, tumbling) closes 48 hours prior to the start date.

Late Fee Policy: Registrations taken after a sports/program registration deadline will be assessed a $10 late fee.

Registration Cancellation Policy (Refund) for all programs: Registrants requesting a refund prior to the start of the class/program will be assessed a $7.00 service fee. Once a class/program/sport has begun (1st practice, session, etc.) NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN. Please note: If paying online through Blue Sombrero, the convenience fee will not be refunded. Did You Know? Greasy Mess Did you know that the drains in your yard and in the street run to Blacklick Creek? When cooking turkeys, hams, and other meats or fatty foods, the fat that is rendered off the meats should be allowed to cool off and dried out then thrown in a trash can with a lid. The juices should not be poured into the storm drains. The storm drains are part of the MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) which may run to a small stream or detention area near you but most of the streams in Reynoldsburg end up in Blacklick Creek. Our streams and creeks are full of activity. They have fish, frogs, snakes and other little creatures in them. By not pouring unwanted oils in them, this will help keep our creeks clean and vibrant. *What is the Right-of-Way? A strip of land taken or dedicated for use as a public way. In addition to the roadway, it normally incorporates the curbs, lawn strips, sidewalks, lighting, and drainage facilities, and may include special features (required by the topography or treatment) such a grade separation, landscaped area, viaducts and bridges.

*Who is responsible for sidewalk repair? Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner.

Elizabeth C SCOR Celebrates Golden Anniversary

In the fall of 1970, there was a strong feeling of need for a senior citizens organization in Reynoldsburg. Lynn Ankney was instrumental in getting the ball rolling. She recruited council member Joann Davidson to assist and approached the City of Reynoldsburg administrators to arrange for the use of the Beech-Maple Lodge. The first fact gathering meeting had 25 interested citizens. A meeting in January of 1971 resulted in the selection of temporary officers with Amy Humphrey serving as president until May. Shortly after, Lyn Village Apartments graciously offered their party room for the monthly meetings. The first officer installation was in June and by-laws were drawn and adopted. The officers (pictured) included: Wilbur Brown, President; Rose Dravec, Vice President; Elsie Daniels, Secretary; and John Wiles, Treasurer. The yearly dues were $2 per person. The City of Reynoldsburg quickly realized they wanted to be involved and set aside funds for the emerging organization under the supervision of Reynoldsburg Recreation Commission.

Although the center was in their initial year, they still completed trips to Roscoe Village, Fenton Glass in West Virginia, Marietta and Burr Oak Lodge. A schedule included Wednesday afternoon card playing at Lyn Village and Friday morning bowling at Reynoldsburg lanes. By December, the organization had 73 members and held a Holiday party at Beech-Maple Lodge. During Wilbur Brown’s term, he added an executive board. The name Senior Citizens of Reynoldsburg (SCOR) was adopted. Quickly the membership outgrew their location and SCOR moved to Beech-Maple Lodge with an established schedule of meetings. More members meant that more programming could be added and they had their first overnight adventure to Berea, Kentucky.

SCOR was growing quickly with the help and guidance of their officers and board. To accommodate the growing membership multiple meeting locations were utilized: Don’s Restaurant; Kirsh Hall in the Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church; and, a vacant storefront in the Astor Center. The City of Reynoldsburg eventually signed a five-year contract for 7211 E. Main Street and paid for the utility costs. With the assistance of Parks and Recreation Director, Phil Kiser, SCOR landed a grant for renovations to the new facility. This new space allowed for new tables, chairs, refrigerator, stove, piano and two pool tables. More trips were planned and the City helped by paying for transportation.

1987 was a big year for SCOR as the City approved construction of a new senior center facility. Additional funds were obtained by the hard work of Phil Kiser, JoAnn Davidson and Grace Maratta as they secured a 1084 grant from the State of Ohio. SCOR also sold bonds at $50 increments to help raise additional funds, headed up by Charles McMillin. Ground was broken on October 19, 1987, for the new center. Dues were at $5 for those in Reynoldsburg and $10 for all others. In May of 1988, the City of Reynoldsburg hired Jenny Walsh as the Senior Center Director. SCOR had over 400 members at this point and continued to grow. August 7, 1988 was the building dedication with the road named in honor of JoAnn Davidson as a thank you for all of her support. The next several years saw continued growth for the center. Activities were added that included, chorus, exercise and a go-cart team. More members and more events meant the need for more staff. In 1995, a part time Senior Citizens Assistant, was hired. In 2006 Judy Doran was hired as a full-time Senior Citizens Assistant. December 2012, Jenny Walsh retired and Judy took over the reins as the Director. Three part-time Assistants were hired to meet the needs of the expanding programming and hours of service.

Through the years, programs have come and some have gone. The health related activities included Diabetes Support, Better Breathing Group, Parkinson Support, Health Screenings, Flu Shots, Mammograms, Nutrition Counseling, and monthly Blood Pressure Checks. Educational classes and speakers are popular with Geography, History, Art History and Genealogy Classes. Arts programming continues to grow with Basket Making, Water Color, Oil Painting, Calligraphy, Wood Carving, Crochet, Jewelry making and Seasonal craft classes. Music is always a hit with Piano Lessons, Choir, String Band, Ballroom Dance, Square Dance, Exercise Dance, Line Dance and entertainment. Physical Fitness is important with Ping Pong, Golf, Bowling, Pool, Malibu Racing, Aquacize, Exercise Dance, T’ai Chi, Breathing and Stretching, Stretch Band and walking. There are monthly speakers about financial planning, health issues, driving help, legal help, utility issues, etc. There are gaming opportunities with dominoes, mahjongg, euchre, bingo, pinochle, bridge, duplicate bridge, scrabble, Texas Hold’em, tonk, Tripoley and canasta. We do counseling and referrals regarding housing issues, health issues, grieving process, medical problems, etc. To round out the schedule we have trips almost every week around Columbus, about once a month around Ohio and several big trips a year. The Seniors Citizens of Reynoldsburg have circumvented the globe! Over the 50 years of serving the community, the members have visited Australia, Canada, China, England, France, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Russia to name a few of the many oversees destinations.

The Senior Citizens of Reynoldsburg may change officers and members, but its intent has not changed during its 50-year history…to provide healthy activities in a safe comfortable environment, to socialize and meet new people and to foster relationships and create memories. The staff, along with t he City of Reynoldsburg Parks and Recreation Department, the Board Members and the individual volunteer efforts of all the members have created a wonderful place for the Senior Citizens of Reynoldsburg throughout the years. Work for a great looking full lawn can begin in late winter and early spring, before the grass starts actively growing. Removing dense matted leaves that accumulate overwinter will keep your turf from being smothered. Mulching the leaves into the turf canopy with your lawn mower is a cheap and natural source of nutrients, but a high volume of leaves will need to be removed. Dormant seeding of any bare spots in February into early March will allow for the seed to start germinating when good conditions exist, but fall seeding is best for reduced weed pressure. You will want the new seedlings tall enough for 2- 3 cuttings before applying a pre- emergent herbicide with a fertilizer. Always refer to the product label directions, but application timing for spring pre-emergent herbicides coincides with the bloom of Forsythia. These products control annual grasses that out compete more desirable grasses in our lawns but die at the first frost in fall leaving bare spots.

Servicing your mower before starting the season should include sharpening the blade. This will cut the grass cleanly, minimizing frayed turf that can lead to a dull look and gives pests an avenue into the turf blades. Mowing height should be in the 3-4 inch range, mowing frequently enough to avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the turf at once. Mid-April to early May is a great time to control broadleaf weeds, dandelions, clovers, ground ivy Etc. Make sure to choose a selective herbicide that only controls broadleaf weeds. Read the product label and apply according to directions. Moving into summer, keep that mower blade sharp, cutting height and frequency consistent and you will be on your way to a great looking lawn.
