Published online at www.vertebrate-zoology.de on September 02, 2010. > Abstract We analyzed a matrix of 55 characters to study the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography of the three species of the genus Grundulus. The most parsimonious hypothesis explaining phylogenetic relationships of Grundulus species is expressed in a tree with a length of 84 steps, (consistency index 0.80, retention index 0.88, rescaled consistency index 0.70). The monophyly of a clade containing the Cheirodontinae and Grundulus is supported by fi ve synapomorphies; within this clade Grundulus is found to be the sister-group of Spintherobolus, as supported by nine synapomorphies. In the proposed hypothesis, the monophyly of Grundulus is supported by eleven synapomorphies and G. quitoensis is sister to a clade including G. cochae and G. bogotensis. The biogeographical analysis suggests that Grundulus is a genus endemic to coldwater lakes of glacial origin in the Andes of northern South America. The taxon-area cladogram shows a high congruence between the areas and phylogeny of the taxa, where each area harbors a particular species. The most closely related areas are La Cocha, a coldwater lake from the Amazon basin (A), and the Bogotá plateau from the Magdalena basin (B).

  • Reproductive Characteristics of Characid Fish Species (Teleostei
Reproductive characteristics of characid fish species (Teleostei... 469 Reproductive characteristics of characid fish species (Teleostei, Characiformes) and their relationship with body size and phylogeny Marco A. Azevedo Setor de Ictiologia, Museu de Ciências Naturais, Fundação Zoobotânica do Rio Grande do Sul, Rua Dr. Salvador França, 1427, 90690-000 Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. ([email protected]) ABSTRACT. In this study, I investigated the reproductive biology of fish species from the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. I also investigated the relationship between reproductive biology and body weight and interpreted this relationship in a phylogenetic context. The results of the present study contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the reproductive strategies present in the species of this family. Most larger characid species and other characiforms exhibit a reproductive pattern that is generally characterized by a short seasonal reproductive period that lasts one to three months, between September and April. This is accompanied by total spawning, an extremely high fecundity, and, in many species, a reproductive migration. Many species with lower fecundity exhibit some form of parental care. Although reduction in body size may represent an adaptive advantage, it may also require evolutionary responses to new biological problems that arise. In terms of reproduction, smaller species have a tendency to reduce the number of oocytes that they produce. Many small characids have a reproductive pattern similar to that of larger characiforms. On the other hand they may also exhibit a range of modifications that possibly relate to the decrease in body size and the consequent reduction in fecundity.

Editor in charge: Uwe Fritz Abstract A new miniature species of the freshwater fsh genus Priocharax is described from the Rio Jamari, Rio Madeira drainage, Amazon basin. Priocharax varii sp. n. is the fourth species currently recognized in the genus and shares with the other three the presence of a conspicuous larval pectoral fn in adults, a fully toothed maxilla, a triangular pseudotympanum situated anterior to the ffth vertebra and a tiny size com- bined with a translucent body. The new species is diagnosed from congeners in having an adipose fn, a unique feature within Priocharax. Molecular identifcation of the new species and the other valid Priocharax species supports the morphological fndings.

  • Phylogeny of the Family Characidae (Teleostei: Characiformes): from Characters to Taxonomy
Neotropical Ichthyology, 8(3):385-568, 2010 Copyright © 2010 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia Phylogeny of the family Characidae (Teleostei: Characiformes): from characters to taxonomy Juan Marcos Mirande The family Characidae is the most diverse among Neotropical fishes. Systematics of this family are mainly based on pre- cladistic papers, and only recently a phylogenetic hypothesis for Characidae was proposed by the author. That phylogeny was based on 360 morphological characters studied for 160 species, including representatives of families related to Characidae. This paper is based on that phylogenetic analysis, with the analyzed characters described herein and documented, accompanied by comparisons of their definition and coding in previous papers. Synapomorphies of each node of the proposed phylogeny are listed, comparisons with previous classifications provided, and autapomorphies of the analyzed species listed. Taxonomic implications of the proposed classification and the position of the incertae sedis genera within Characidae are discussed. A discussion of the phylogenetic information of the characters used in the classical systematics of the Characidae is provided.

In addition, over the last decade at least 100 species were described every year.
