New “Green” Defoamer for water based coatings
MOUSSEX® 7141 HL-V
helps paint formulators to make it « greener »
1 The increase of petroleum raw material prices, the VOC reduction, the environmental consideration and the renewable materials are the new basis for many new developments in coatings. Most of them can work in paints formulated with a high ratio 90 – 95 % of green and renewable material, nevertheless the difficult point is often the additive side. Due to their functionalities, additives have complex structures which are not easily modifiable to turn into a green version.
What are the different chemistries used as defoamers in water borne systems?
Defoamers for water based coatings were mainly based on 3 possible structures
9 Mineral and paraffin oils Combination with solid particles (silica / mineral soaps) to increase efficiency 9 Polysiloxanes 9 Special polymeric products
Now a new “green” structure is available
9 Vegetable oils
What makes a difference on chemistries used? 9 Mineral and paraffin oils Highly incompatible, may cause gloss reduction Mainly used in flat, semi-gloss and in plasters
9 Polysiloxanes Recommended for high gloss systems More flexible compatibility adjustment regarding the chemistry
9 Special polymeric products Mainly working by incompatibility in water based systems (as air-release agents)
9 Vegetable Oils Renewable raw material Complete and fast biodegradability Incompatibility tendencies, efficiency comparable to mineral oils
What an ideal defoamer should be?
9 Insoluble / incompatible in foaming media Æ To keep active material breaking the foam bubbles 9 Lower surface tension as the foaming medium Æ To be able to interfere with the foam stabilizing surfactant 9 Good Spreading tendency Æ To stop the foam stabilization (Marangoni effect, Repulsion) 9 Inert Æ To not disturb the paint properties
9 Environmentally
VOC Free Biodegradability Renewable material 2 MOUSSEX ® 7141 HL-V is a Polyvalent defoamer used to prevent the formation of foam during the production and the application of water borne paint and printing inks
Compared to 2 types of effective defoamers:
¾ Mineral oil based defoamer in emulsion at 50 % solid material ¾ Mix of Mineral oil and Vegetable oil based defoamer at 100 % active material (70% of Vegetable oil) 1 Stirring test
The paint is stirred for 2 minutes at 2000 rpm. The height of foam is measured and compared with the control.

MOUSSEX® 7141 HL-V
9 It shows excellent de-foaming performances, in stirring test and in Roll Brush test. It needs to be added in low dosage due to active content.
9 Compared to the defoamer based on mineral oil in emulsion at 50 % solid content, it shows stronger efficiency.
9 It shows similar performance to a defoamer based on a mix of mineral and vegetable oil (70 % Vegetable) 3 MOUSSEX® 7141 HL-V is a VOC free pure vegetable oil based defoamer, designed to help the development of water borne “green” formulations.
9 100 % Active Vegetable oils based defoamer 9 VOC free 9 Over 90% of renewable material 9 90 % biodegradable in 21 days (CEC-L-33-A-93 ) 9 Compliant with Eco label, 2011/10/EC, FDA (175-105, 175-300)
9 Prevents the formation of foam during production and application 9 Eliminates existing foam in systems. 9 Does not involve unwanted secondary effects (de-wetting, craters) 9 Incorporation with medium to high shear forces due to its high concentration in active material 9 Recommended dosage: 0,1 % to 1,0 % 9 Excellent defoaming properties in Architectural paints, inks. 9 Wide compatibility in various emulsions paints (Acrylic, Styrene-Acrylic, Vinyl-Acrylic...).
