THE VALUE OF DISTANCE: ART’S CULTURAL IDENTITY AMIDST TECHNOLOGY’S TRANSFORMATIONS OF SPACE By David Hadlow Ogle Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Liverpool School of the Arts May 2018 II ABSTRACT THE VALUE OF DISTANCE: ART’S CULTURAL IDENTITY AMIDST TECHNOLOGY’S TRANSFORMATIONS OF SPACE By David Hadlow Ogle This study explores technology’s propensity to transform our comprehensions of space, considering the implications of this for our understandings of the work of art and the value that we ascribe to it. With our encounters increasingly a by-product of technological interface, the central question of this work is posed as follows: In what ways (and to what degree) may we regard the contemporary conditions facing the art object (and the values that these elicit) as a consequence of our prevailing technological landscape and its capacity to re-configure our conceptions of space and place? In confronting this, the study begins by surveying recent public justifications made for the arts and the criteria by which their value is ascertained. A trend is recognised, in the growing prevalence of instrumental qualifiers for art’s worth (its quantifiable impacts as a social utility) and a shift away from intrinsic measures. In response to this, I propose the concept of Accumulative Value, arguing that the totality of an art object’s intellectual considerations and explorations (over historical time) are an intrinsic attribute of the object itself and a qualifier of its objective worth. The notion of value itself (with its varying interpretations) is then explored, followed by a contemporary re-evaluation of Walter Benjamin’s concept of the aura, arguing that in our present circumstances this notion may be used in description of an object’s fixed spatial locality. -

A Vision for North Shore
View from Lee - north to south Published September 2020 3 North Shore Vision I am pleased to introduce this North Shore Vision for the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City World Heritage Site. Foreword Liverpool is a city that is undergoing a multi-billion pound renaissance and we are constantly seeking the right balance where regeneration and conservation can complement each other. We are proud of our unique heritage and have a desire to ensure that the city continues to thrive, with its historic legacy safeguarded and enhanced. On 17 July 2019, Liverpool City Council declared a Climate Change Emergency and I led a debate on the impending global ecological disaster, calling on all political parties to come together to rise to the challenge of making Liverpool a net zero carbon city by 2030. The way we do things in the future will need to change to a more sustainable model. To achieve this, the city has embraced the principles of the United Nations Development and this document sets out our ambitions for future growth and development for the North Shore area of the city firmly within this context. We have already begun work with partners to deliver that ambition. Existing and highly successful examples include the iconic Titanic Hotel redevelopment, restoration of the Tobacco Warehouse and the proposed refurbishment of the listed Engine House at Bramley Moore Dock which reinvigorate dilapidated heritage assets on the North Docks, providing access and interpretation to a new generation of people in the City. Liverpool has a well-earned reputation for being a city of firsts. -

The Everton FC Collection
www.cultureliverpool.co.uk/the-everton-fc-collection/ The Everton FC Collection The Everton FC Collection is presented by Jan Grace from Liverpool Record Office and forms part of the Liverpool Through the Archives series, produced for the Connecting Our Communities project… The Everton Collection is the largest and most diverse collection of any football club in the UK. It covers the history of football on Merseyside, including when Everton and Liverpool were originally one team known only as Everton, and they played their football at Anfield. The reason why the Everton Collection exists is fundamentally because of one man, David France, and his steadfast devotion to Everton Football Club. This led him from buying a programme as an 8-year-old to prove to his Mum that he had attended the match, to progressing to systematically buying an astounding amount of EFC material that evidences both the social and footballing history of the first football club of Liverpool. In 2010, The Everton Collection Charitable Trust, with support from The Heritage Lottery Fund, purchased David France’s collection for a seven-figure sum and when, at the same time, Everton FC gifted its own archive, The Everton Collection was formed. The Collection is located at Liverpool Record Office at Liverpool Central Library where it is preserved and conserved in purpose-built archive accommodation meeting the highest standards for long-term preservation and under the care of professional archivists. The Everton Collection Charitable Trust was set up, with Lord Grantchester as Chair, to ensure the integrity of the Collection in future years, to prevent it from being split up and sold. -
