After gett ing off to the best start in program history at 12-3, the Skyhawks sett led in to compile a 13-10 Ohio Valley Conference regular season mark which earned them a No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. Prior to the conference tournament beginning post season awards were handed out, including a Freshman of the Year accolade for UT Martin’s Jenny Bain. Megan Williams joined Bain on the All-OVC First Team, while Laura Roberts also earned a nod on the All-OVC Second Team. After a disappointing fi rst round loss to Tennessee Tech, the most magical three days in the program’s history began coming to fruition. UT Martin picked up a win over (3) Morehead State and a 4-0 upset win over (1) Jacksonville State on day two of the tournament, earning them one of three spots in the tournament’s fi nal day. After avenging the fi rst round loss to Tennessee Tech 4-2, UT Martin then had to knock off (2) Southeast Missouri in back-to-back games to claim the program’s fi rst-ever OVC Tournament crown and automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Skyhawks’ win made them not only the lowest seeded team to win the conference tournament, but also the fi rst team to ever win fi ve straight games out of the losers bracket to win the tournament title. At the tournament’s end four Skyhawks appeared on the OVC All-Tournament team including MVP accolades for starting pitcher Kara Harper. Joining her on the all- tournament team were Megan Van Arsdale, Savannah Roberts and Laurie Lindow. For the Skyhawks magical eff ort in the OVC Tournament they earned a date with perennial national powerhouse No. 6 Arizona in the NCAA Louisville Regional. After taking an early lead over the eight-time national champions, Arizona was able to rally behind their NCAA record home run hitt ing to pick up the 9-3 win. In their second game of the Louisville Regional UT Martin squared off against Purdue where it carried a 2-2 tie into the seventh inning before the Boilermakers were able to rally for the win, thus ending the Skyhawks season. During the year the Skyhawks set or broke 20 program and individual records, including the coveted home run record. Bain set the new individual home run mark with her 14 bombs on the year while as a team UT Martin belted home 55 dingers. Senior pitcher Kara Harper also became the program’s fi rst 20 game winner with her 20-9 record while also moving to No. 1 on the career victories chart with 41. 2009 OVC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS BETTYE GILES FIELD WWW.UTMSPORTS.COM In 1996 The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team enjoyed its fi rst season at its new on-campus facility, Bett ye Giles Field. Dedicated April 13, 1996, the softball facility is one of the latest projects for Ms. Giles, who has been a part of the UT Martin faculty since 1952. Giles was a driving force behind almost every program relating to women’s athletics at UT Martin today. She served as women’s athletics director for 25 years and was an integral part of making UT Martin a pioneer for intercollegiate women’s athletics. Bett ye Giles Field is 190 feet down each line and 220 feet to straight away centerfi eld. Since 1996 the Skyhawk program has added new fi eld lights, stadium bleacher seating, state-of-the-art hitt ing facility, concession stand and press box to Bett ye Giles Field. Bett ye Giles Field has provided a distinct home fi eld advantage for the Skyhawks, amassing a record of 149-131-2. Bett ye Giles Field also played host to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in 1999. 2009 OVC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS ATHLETIC TRAINING FACILITIES Dr. John Materson Dr. Keith Nord Dr. G. Bradford Wright Dr. David E. Yakin WWW.UTMSPORTS.COM ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM With three Skyhawk training room locations throughout the UT Martin athletic facilities, student-athletes can be assured of receiving the best medical attention and rehabilitation available. The primary athletic training room facilities are located in the Skyhawk Fieldhouse. There are also satellite athletic training room locations in the Bob Carroll Football Building and near Pat Head Summitt Court in Skyhawk Arena. The Skyhawk Fieldhouse athletic training room was renovated in 2007 as part of a $1.9 million dollar renovation of the entire Skyhawk Fieldhouse and Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Included in the renovation was an updated whirlpool rehabilitation room where student-athletes can receive aqua rehabilitation and treatment. The athletic training room also contains multiple examination stations with the latest in rehabilitation equipment. The athletic training staff uses a comprehensive approach to the injury care and wellness of student-athletes by utilizing state- of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment with the latest methods in the care and prevention of injuries. Assistant Athletic Director Bart Belew is in his eighth year as head athletic trainer. Belew, a UT Martin graduate, went on to earn a master’s degree and serve as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss where he worked with both the football and baseball programs before a stint at Freed-Hardeman led him to a return to his alma mater in 2000 as the head athletic trainer. He currently has a staff of four full-time certified athletic trainers and support staff of 16 athletic training students.
