Western Region When someone says Kentucky I immediately have pictures running through my mind of waterfalls, open pastures with beautiful horses grazing, trains traveling through the hills as well as forests and caves to explore. Also I will never forget Kentucky is the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. I did forget once, way back in sixth grade, on a test given by my teacher, Ms. Inez Crain. Of course she boldly pointed out Monument at Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace to the whole class that I was the only one that missed the answer. Oh well, you can’t know everything, but I’ll always remember that. 6 Bluegrass Region Eastern Region Central Region I do, however, know what I like. I like traveling back roads with no particular place to be and no certain time to be there. When traveling leads to hunger, I like finding a Mom and Pop place to eat—the ones that serve food that embraces your taste buds and leaves you wanting more. Walk in as a stranger and leave feeling like part of the family, that’s what I like best. Western Kentucky is home to Back Home Restaurant in Elizabethtown. Back Home has been in business more than 30 years. It is now run by Lori and her husband Steve, serving good ole’ family cooking. Lori’s daughter, Hali has a new boutique on the upper level. Go in and see what Hali has to offer. Don’t forget to stop in Henderson and taste some of the best BBQ around at Thomason’s Barbecue. They have been doing BBQ for more than 50 years the old-fashioned way, in a masonry pit in the middle of the restaurant. As you travel through Hazel, go by Blue and White Grill to experience foods like you haven’t eaten since you left home. They have been voted as the #1 best place to eat catfish. They serve so much more than just catfish. Tell John and Barbara “Hello” for me. 7 Not to be out-done, Central Kentucky offers many exciting places to explore. One of Kentucky’s oldest eateries in continuous operation, Cottage Inn, opened in 1929 in Louisville and still serves up simple and affordable food. Ms. Zuky is a treasure. Try her Salmon Patties (page 112). Riley’s Bakery in Bowling Green is also a must stop. They have been baking from scratch for 70 plus years. Walk in and smell the wonders that only the smell of fresh baked goods can offer. They still use their own Mother’s recipes. Don’t forget the tea cookies—everyone’s favorite. In the Bluegrass Region, you will enjoy eating at places like York Street Café in Newport. This is the best place for a young man to take his First Date or an older gentleman to take his lovely bride of many years to let her know he still appreciates her, dearly. Then there is Candleberry’s Tearoom Café in Frankfort that is a must see. In this place where elegance meets deliciousness, do not leave without eating Michele’s Ham Salad (page 144) and their incredible desserts. Everything is made fresh in house. Our Best Restaurant in Smithfield is a trucker’s dream stop. They showcase the cornmeal and flour that was once produced there. Let Kay Way tell you about the long ago days when the mill was a way of life in the area. While traveling the back roads in Eastern Kentucky, be sure to stop in Irvine at The Twin. Step up and order a big ole’ Root Beer Float (page 221), they teach the new staff members to make them the old fashioned way. This is the mainstay in the town since they opened back in 1959 still run by the original family and serving the same items. This is the place where you can see everyone at some point in time, meet friends after school and go after winning the big game to rehash every play.
