A RESOLUTION to Honor the Reverend Billy Graham and to Welcome the Graham Crusade Team to Nashville and the State of Tennessee Filed for intro on 05/25/2000 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 781 By Goins A RESOLUTION to honor the Reverend Billy Graham and to welcome the Graham Crusade team to Nashville and the state of Tennessee. WHEREAS, the Christian religion, drawing upon its Old Testament prophetic roots and the example of Jesus' own mission on Earth, grew explosively during the first three centuries of the Christian era; and WHEREAS, since that time, Christianity's vitality has waxed and waned during the tides of history. That history has been punctuated by the appearance of certain charismatic preachers and teachers of the Gospel who have responded strongly to God's call and have gone out to make a dramatic impact on the lives of thousands of people by helping them to establish a personal relationship with their Creator; and WHEREAS, one such dedicated servant of God is the Reverend Billy Graham, who, since his ordination to the ministry by a church in the Southern Baptist Convention in 1939, has preached to more people in live audiences than anyone else in history. He has addressed over HJR0781 01409756 -1- 210 million people in more than 185 countries and territories. Television, video and film have made his messages available to hundreds of millions more; and WHEREAS, William F. Graham was born November 7, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late William Franklin and Morrow Coffey Graham. He learned the value of hard work on the family dairy farm, but still managed to read widely during his youth; and WHEREAS, in the fall of 1934, a traveling evangelist, Mordecai Ham, brought his ministry to Charlotte and, at age 16, young Billy made a personal commitment to Christ. Five years later, he was ordained to the ministry; and WHEREAS, Mr. Graham attended the Florida Bible Institute and in 1943 graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois, where he met and married Ruth McCue Bell, who had spent her early life in China as the daughter of a missionary surgeon; and WHEREAS, Billy served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Western Springs, Illinois from 1943-45, and then spent the next five years as Charter Vice President of Youth for Christ International in Chicago. He preached throughout the United States and Europe, following the Second World War, and emerged as a promising evangelist; and WHEREAS, a scheduled three-week crusade in Los Angeles in 1949 drew overflow crowds and was extended to eight weeks, projecting Mr. Graham into international prominence; in 1950, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association was founded in Minneapolis and the "Hour of Decision" radio program, now heard on more than 600 stations around the world, was launched; and WHEREAS, Billy Graham's ministry has carried God's message around the world, including the world's major cities, remote African villages, most of the nations of the former Eastern bloc, and to both heads of state and humble tribesmen. Millions more are reached through crusade television specials, the newspaper column, "My Answer," Decision magazine, the productions of World Wide Pictures and the eighteen bestselling books written by Mr. Graham; and - 2 - 01409756 WHEREAS, Mr. Graham has counseled Presidents of the United States and has received awards and honors including the Congressional Gold Medal, the Templeton Foundation Prize for Progress in Religion, the Big Brother Award, recognition by B'nai B'rith and the National Conference of Christians and Jews; he has received honorary degrees and other honors and awards too numerous to mention; and WHEREAS, Billy Graham has appeared 42 times in the 54 years of the "Ten Most Admired Men in the World", has appeared on the covers of major news magazines in this country and has been the subject of countless magazine and newspaper feature articles and books; and WHEREAS, despite all the trappings of fame inherent in a worldwide ministry, Mr. Graham continues faithfully to follow his statement that, "My one purpose in life is to help people find a personal relationship with God, which, I believe, comes through knowing Christ"; and WHEREAS, now at age 81, Mr. Graham looks back on a fruitful ministry of sixty-one years, having the love and support of his wife Ruth, children Virginia, Anne Morrow, Ruth Bell, William Franklin III, Nelson Edman, 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; that ministry still continues and, in June, comes to Nashville and Tennessee; and WHEREAS, the Graham crusades take great care to work closely with local church leaders to lay the groundwork and provide for a follow-up ministry to those new hearers of God's call; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, That we honor the life and work of the Reverend Billy Graham in proclaiming God's message to humanity; we welcome him and the Billy Graham Crusade team to Nashville and the State of Tennessee. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy. - 3 - 01409756 - 4 - 01409756.

  • Billy Graham: a New Kind of Evangelist
Monday, Oct. 25, 1954 Billy Graham: A New Kind of Evangelist The first one to come forward was a round, sensible-looking housewife with thick glasses. She stood as still and undramatic as if she were waiting to be served at the meat counter. The next was an eleven-year-old boy who kept his head low to hide his tears: a thin girl appeared behind him and put her arm comfortingly on his shoulder. These three were joined by a broad- shouldered young man whose machine-knitted jersey celebrated a leaping swordfish. then by a pretty young Negro woman in her best clothes with a sleeping baby in her arms. Suddenly there were too many to count, standing on the trampled grass in the blaze of lights. Some of them wept quietly, some of them stared at the ground and some looked upward. Above them all stood a tall, blond young man in a double-breasted tan gabardine suit. His handsome, strong-jawed face was drawn and his blue eyes glittered; for a few seconds he gnawed nervously on a thumbnail, and bright sweat covered his high forehead. He was speaking softly, but with an urgency that seemed to tense every muscle of his body: "You can leave here with peace and joy and happiness such as you've never known. You say: 'Well, 'Billy, that's all well and good. I'll think it over and I may come back some night and I'll—' Wait a minute! You can't come to Christ any time you want to.

HAM, EVANGELISM AND PROHIBITION MEETINGS IN TEXAS, 1903·1919 By Jerry Hopkins Prohibition, as part of the progressive movement, involved evangelical Christians in Texas and the South. Professional evangelists were particularly drawn to prohibition, viewing it as a moral crusade to save individuals, the church, and society from destruction. To these evangelists drinking liquor was immoral. For Southern evangelicals prohibition had been a persistent preoccu pation. In the South this concern over man's moral depravity, particularly as it was demonstrated in drunkenness, developed into a drive for absolution that found fulfillment in the revivals conducted by such Southern evangelists as Mordecai Fowler Ham. I Mordecai Ham was born in ]877 Allen County, Kentucky, into the fami ly of a Baptist minister.

It was exciting to be a part of the planning and follow up to the crusade and to get to hear Dr. Graham preach each night during the crusade. I took this picture from the floor of the TWA Dome as he was conducting the invitation, and it came to my mind last week when I learned of his death. As many have noted, Billy Graham is probably the most influential person in the 20th Century. He preached the gospel to hundreds of millions around the world and counseled every U.S. president from Harry Truman to Barak Obama. He is known as a man of integrity. It’s safe to say that Billy Graham was probably the best-known person in the world during his day. But do you know the name Mordecai Ham? A fiery evangelist in his own right, he preached revivals across the country, in- cluding Houston, Galveston, Bay City, and the Golden Triangle area. It is estimated that over 300,000 people came to Christ under his preaching.

ReNew Part 4 by Ben Saayman Enthusiasm Are you enthusiastic about your life in Christ? Are you exited about your future with Him and His plans and purpose for your life? Thank God I'm not where I used to be but I still face challenges and some of them I just can't seem to get behind me. If you are battling to do something and not getting it right or seeing progress - the chances are good that you are going about it the wrong way and you should change your strategy. Not having a great day every day is not because of circumstances but a choice. Make the choice today that you are loved by God and are a conqueror in every situation you face because of the Blood of Jesus! Circumstances and situations shouldn't change you. You should change your circumstances with Jesus I have found that your attitude towards obstacles has more to do than your will power, your attitude never gets tired...your will power does however.... REMIND yourself THAT ITS not who you are but WHO'S YOU ARE IN CHRIST. Make a choice - no matter what is going on in the outside world, we know what is going on, on the inside of us, because we have Jesus and the Holy Spirit to encourage you. Matthew 5:14 TPT “Your lives light up the world. Let others see your light from a distance, for how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop? Your Enthusiasm has the ability to light up the world.
