Mann, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between Hollywood and American Christianity from 1998 to the present—a time frame that encompasses the recent rise of the “Christian blockbusters.” This period saw unprecedented interaction between Hollywood and what has been called the “Christian film industry,” or “Holywood”—a loose and ever-changing assortment of Christian film companies and independent filmmakers that have operated in one form or another since the silent era and whose productions were, until recently, primarily relegated to local theatrical markets, church screenings, and Christian television. Although historically unprecedented, this new interaction between Hollywood and “Holywood” can be understood as a clear extension of the rise of both new media technology and transmedia industries. This ii dissertation argues that a once not-for-profit filmmaking exercise by Christian filmmakers, for the purposes of inner-church ministry, has now become a huge business built upon selling films to churches as resources for both inner-church ministry and outer-church evangelism.

Tanenbaum considered Graham to be “one of the greatest friends of the Jewish people and of Israel in the entire Christian world in the twentieth century,” standing he shared with Pope John XXIII and Reinhold Niebuhr.1 The award, later renamed the Isaiah Award for Exemplary Interreligious Leadership to echo the biblical prophet Isaiah’s call for social justice, recognized the recipient’s support of Israel, opposi- tion to antisemitism, and promotion of interfaith relations.2 In spite of opposition from many liberal American Jews who considered Graham’s selection a troubling choice, bestowing the AJC’s first interfaith award upon an evangelical Protestant made sense to Rabbi Tanenbaum.3 Since 1969 the AJC had formally partnered with leaders of the theologically conservative Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, to which Graham belonged, to de- velop greater theological understanding between Jews and evangelicals.4 Graham’s frequent public support of Israel, at a time when prominent American Jews and mainline Protestants openly criticized its government and treatment of Palestinians, further endeared him to Tanenbaum.5 1.

AMSTERDAM 2000 17 Planning began in earnest for the largest and most strategic conference ever led by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, with the goal of bringing together evangelists from all over the world to encourage and learn from one another and to prepare for ministry in the 21st century. WORLD EMERGENCY FUND 17 For 25 years, the BGEA, through the World Emergency Fund, has helped provide relief to people affected by major disasters around the world. TV TELEPHONE MINISTRY 19 Volunteers answered calls and provided spiritual help for viewers of the television specials of Billy Graham Crusades and movies. RESPONSE CENTER 19 The Billy Graham Response Center opened in 1998 to provide immediate information and service to seekers and friends of BGEA via a new toll-free telephone number.

    A Heritage at Risk: The Proceedings of the Evangelical Archives Conference, July 13-15, 1988 This paper contains the report that that grew out of the Evangelical Archives Conference held at the Billy Graham Center of Wheaton College, in Wheaton, Illinois. Preface Note on definition of "Evangelical": The purpose of the conference described in this booklet was to work out ways to better preserve and use the records of the institutions of the evangelical movement in America. Because "evangelical" is given a variety of meanings by pastors, journalists, theologians, laypersons, and just about everyone else, it should be explained that here the word is used in its broadest sense. That is, it refers to conservative Protestants committed to the need for personal salvation through Jesus Christ, the authority of the Bible, and preaching the Christian gospel. Thus, for the purposes of this conference, "evangelical" included but was not limited to overlapping groups such as fundamentalists, Pentecostals, the Holiness movement, Black evangelicals, Pietists, Campbellites, Baptists, Calvinists, etc. HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET This booklet is intended to assist those involved in some way with evangelical archives, whether as a curator, a researcher, someone interested in starting an archival program for his/her institution, or someone considering a grant proposal from an archives. For those thinking about beginning an archives, it gives helpful guidelines on decisions that need to be made as well as standards for personnel, facilities, supplies, etc. Archivists new and old should find interesting the suggestions on obstacles to cooperation between archives, the suggestions as to possible collecting policies covering subject areas of evangelicalism that are not currently being documented, and the description of ways of building support for the archives in the general community.

Graham was born November 7, 1918, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late William Franklin and Morrow Coffey Graham. He learned the value of hard work on the family dairy farm but still managed to read widely during his youth; and WHEREAS, in the fall of 1934, a traveling evangelist, Mordecai Ham, brought his ministry to Charlotte, and at age sixteen, young Billy made a personal commitment to Christ.

Shields, Advisor Throughout Billy Graham’s career, the evangelist sought performative manners to ensure that he would not be perceived as another “Elmer Gantry”, or huckster preacher out to win money, fame, and favor. Graham’s intent was to grow a ministry that would form a new performance paradigm for American revivalism. Graham prepared as an actor to use his gifts, train his voice and body, to write a different style of script, to capitalize on celebrity, and to embrace new media forms that would bring his message around the world thus creating a “New” revivalism while at the same time distancing himself from being seen as the character in Sinclair Lewis’ novel Elmer Gantry and subsequent Richard Brooks directed movie version of Elmer Gantry starring Burt Lancaster as a Graham-like Gantry. This project reintroduces a familiar figure to recent history and elucidates the social and performative transitions constitutive of Billy Graham’s journey to cast himself as a desirable evangelist. Graham’s public performance is viewed, specifically from before the Los Angeles crusade of 1949 to Graham’s reaction following the Academy Awards when the movie version of Elmer Gantry won three statues (1961).
