General Business 1 PRESIDENT’S REPORT It gives me great pleasure to present the 2012/13 McKinnon Cricket Club Annual Report to you. We have much to be proud with regard to our achievements as a club this year. Success is more than just the performance of our 1st XI team. Our club can celebrate the success of our many other XI’s, the development of our juniors into senior players, our financial performance becoming more stable, the major contribution that our volunteers make, our contribution to our local community and the tremendous spirit that we have around the club. I would firstly wish to congratulate Michael Watts and his 2nd XI on their fine season, capped off by winning the Senior Seconds premiership. The team was a mix of seasoned players as well as some of our fine young talent. Well done to Ryan Thompson for his Man of the Match performance with a patient and telling innings. Paul Cox led his 14A Twilight team to a premiership. This collection of boys played in a very strong competition and it is fair to say the talent in the team is outstanding. They are a wonderfully well drilled team who played with great passion. Great play by Aman Prasad who picked up the well-deserved Player of the Match award. Our 4th XI under Stuart Hamstead is to be congratulated for playing in another high quality Grand Final but just falling agonisingly short again. Tremendous to see young 15yo Connor Byrne awarded the Man of the Match award for his wonderful innings. Special mention needs to be made of the Under 17 team which played off in their 3rd consecutive Grand Final, only to be beaten by a strong representative side from Bonbeach Tangy. Our Under 12’s again took out the Lightning Premiership for the 4th consecutive year. In a very strong competition, the boys are to be congratulated for continuing the “McKinnon tradition”. No doubt some of these lads will graduate into our senior ranks and be influential players in the future. Our 1st XI did it tough at times this year fielding arguably the youngest squad in the very demanding Senior Division of the VTCA. Led by first time Captain and graduate of our Junior Program, Adam Pullman, the boys pulled of some rousing victories and only narrowly went down to the eventual Premier in Old Mentonians. I am sure each player gained valuable experience and will be better for it as we face next season. It was always the case that we had to get 1st XI game experience into many of our younger players. Making their debut this year were Sandun Dias, Brad Kruger, Matt Collett, Jacob Duscher, Ben Schwab, Brendan Dawes and Cam Watts. The future looks bright for our Senior team and we are proud of the number of junior cricketers we transition through to our 1st XI, it is an indicator of high importance to us as a club. We must thank Peter Streker for his role as First x1 scorer and in player development. We are fortunate to have someone with such insight in sports psychology. Thanks Peter We were fortunate to have Lancashire player Wayne White with us for 8 games. He is simply one of the best players to have pulled on the baggy purple for McKinnon. His batting is all class and his bowling rapid and lion hearted. Wayne took out the Ken Hilton and Peter Watts medals for best player overall and best 1st XI player respectively. He also finished equal second in the Paxino Medal and I am sure he would have come close to winning it if he had played the whole season. We will watch Wayne’s career with interest as he pushes for higher honours back in native England. Thank you to Peter Marshall in his role as Club Coach. Pete puts in an enormous amount of time to the club and his energy and enthusiasm are essential ingredients in making McKinnon a place people are drawn to. Peter put in countless hours in preseason and during the season at training and on match days. 2 Our Junior Program under the tutelage of Rick Pullman and Paul O’Donnell continues to be the envy of many clubs. Our numbers remain strong, the spirit in which the boys play the game is respectful and the development of our players a joy to watch. Thank you to the team coaches, managers, scorers and others who assisted. It is a great time in one’s life when you can help out around your children’s sporting interests. I need to highlight the work of Rick Pullman with our Juniors over many years. He has been a rock and ensured we were always presenting McKinnon teams to be proud of. Rick, after threatening for many years, has tendered his resignation as Junior Coach. Bravo Rick for a wonderful contribution to our Junior program. You have much to be proud of as you see so many of our young cricketers graduate into higher levels and representative teams. With regard to representative honours achieved by our junior playing group, these are listed in the report. I have no doubt that there would be very few clubs, if any, across the State that would have had 15 boys selected for representative teams. This is an outstanding achievement. On top of this we saw junior graduate Ashton Agar make his First Class debut for Western Australia and be selected, in his debut year, in the Sheffield Shield team of the year. Congratulations Ashton. As well, we saw another junior graduate Anna O’Donnell be selected as the inaugural First XI captain of the Melbourne Cricket Club Women’s team, well done Anna on achieving that honour. We continued to consolidate our financial performance under the leadership of our Treasurer Jill Watts. We have a sound budget in place which drives our revenue streams and controls our expenditures. Our financial performance has improved by several thousand this year to virtually break even. This is despite having to pay out over $4,500 for ground curator fees which we haven’t had to for many years. I must acknowledge the work of Noel Stewart whose tireless efforts saw us significantly increase sponsorship and initiate several fundraising drives. Brilliant work Noel! We continue to work hard to present our facilities in clean and tidy condition through the work of our volunteers. This year as I mentioned we engaged the City of Glen Eira to prepare our turf wickets. We enjoyed the break from the enormous volunteer loads of recent years and assisted Clive Warr from the Council in his duties. The wickets were very good quality and the outfield the best that anyone can remember in 50 years. Well done Clive and the City of Glen Eira. The work undertaken by Shaun Davis to research our 1st XI representatives took some 2 years and provided the basis of a stirring and somewhat emotional presentation of our new look baggy purple caps to our 1st XI. Club Legends and Life Members were invited to present the caps to the squad. Each 1st XI player reaching back to the 1950’s will have a number representing their ascendency to the Firsts team. Great work Shaun in producing an important legacy that will be a fine McKinnon tradition. In recognition of his work Shaun was presented with the 2012/13 Sandy Sanderson Club Person of the Year. We saw further growth in our Past Players group this year, which is extremely pleasing. Under the leadership of Ken Dowling and Ken Hilton the group now numbers over 60 and it assembles each year for a luncheon with a guest speaker and the telling of many tall stories from earlier days. Thank you also to Committee members in Ben Charles, Adrian Keane, Greg Fitzgerald, Russell Dowling and Chris Whitehead. The Past Players have committed to keeping the club memorabilia in good order and in that regard have upgraded premiership photos that were showing signs of wear. Thanks to Ken Dowling also for his expert calligraphy in preparing our premiership photos. 3 Thanks to Heather Faragher and her terrific work on the newsletter, it was greatly appreciated by players, parents, supporters and sponsors alike. A great initiative and a professional product. I must acknowledge the work of Chris Whitehead and Brian Osmand who for many years have provided a smiling face behind the bar on Saturdays. We thank you for giving up your time to volunteer and enable the club to raise much needed funds. To all those who assisted Jill Watts in the preparation of our substantial afternoon teas, thank you. This year we introduced a new supporters club, the Centurions. We secured over 20 members who enjoyed discounts and a plenty of good cheer. We thank you for your contribution and look forward to building on this initiative. We value greatly the contribution our Sponsors make to the club. Thank you to our Major Sponsor, The McKinnon Hotel and Cameron Stewart for your support, and also to our Gold Sponsors – Hungry Jacks and John O’Brien, United Tools McKinnon and Laurie Herron, Lifetime Pine and Albert Toet, Bendigo Bank Ormond and Colin Geldart, Hocking Stuart Bentleigh and Peter Sinclair, and Max’s Supplements and Keith Ellis.
