ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2013/14 It is with great pleasure I tender my first report to the members as President of the Altona Cricket Club. The 2013/2014 season saw sig- nificant change both on and off the field with the club promoting a greater community based agenda as well as being back where we belong on the field – in the finals. The off season was a frenetic one with a number of signings of ex Premier cricketers in an attempt to bring a greater level of profes- sionalism into the playing group. This in turn also allowed for the development of our junior ranks who played seniors by being able to see what it takes to play at the highest level. The appointment of Shane Jones as Club captain was a highlight in the off season as Shane came to us with a wealth of Premier cricket and Australian under age experience. Couple this with the signing of Andrew McCammond and sub district sides knew Altona were once again going to be competitive. On the field the greatest achievement was the year that Aaron Maynard had. To score over 800 runs in a year including 3 centuries and a 90 not out was a stellar performance that the likes of which has not been witnessed before at ACC. The manner in which Aaron accumulated runs was phenomenal and his presence at the crease and in the field assisted the junior players im- mensely. Many new players debuted for the club this year but one most notable debutant was Dylan Ap- pleby who at 15 showed a great level of maturity and promise and with the other junior players allows us to look forward to greater things in the future. As stated earlier we tried this year to have a greater community focus and with Glenn Paten we participated regularly in the Council initiated Sport Precinct meetings. We also for the first time organised a “Ladies / Charity day” which became our most successful function and has now been added as an annual event along with our Presidents Lunch. The charity day attracted 110 people and was a joint function with the Altona Hockey Club where over $4700 was raised for Breast West, the Melanoma Foundation and the Jane McGrath Foundation. This day will be spo- ken about for a long time to come so please keep this in mind for next year. I would like to congratulate the U/13’s winning the premiership in the Friday Night competition and being Runners Up in the Saturday Morning competition. This along with the junior develop- ment program that was implemented as a part of the preseason campaign and Saturday ses- sions during the year means we are promoting junior cricket to the wider community whilst rais- ing the profile of the club. Well done to all involved. 8 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 This year the club proudly announced to the cricketing world that a home grown player reached the pinnacle of playing for his country. As President I would like to congratulate James Muirhead for being selected in the Australian T20 side and wish him well for the year. Jimmy never forgets us and has played as a guest player in our T20 games and comes down when he is free.

  • Beware Milestones
DECIDE: How to Manage the Risk in Your Decision Making Beware milestones Having convinced you to improve your measurement of what really matters in your organisation so that you can make better decisions, I must provide a word of caution. Sometimes when we introduce new measures we actually hurt decision making. Take the effect that milestones have on people. Milestones as the name infers are solid markers of progress on a journey. You have either made the milestone or you have fallen short. There is no better example of the effect of milestones on decision making than from sport. Take the game of cricket. If you don’t know cricket all you need to focus in on is one number, 100. That number represents a century of runs by a batsman in one innings and is a massive milestone. Careers are judged on the number of centuries a batsman scores. A batsman plays the game to score runs by hitting a ball sent toward him at varying speeds of up to 100.2 miles per hour (161.3 kilometres per hour) by a bowler from 22 yards (20 metres) away. The 100.2 mph delivery, officially the fastest ball ever recorded, was delivered by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan. Shoaib was nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express! Needless to say, scoring runs is not dead easy. A great batting average in cricket at the highest levels is 40 plus and you are among the elite when you have an average over 50. Then there is Australia’s great Don Bradman who had an average of 99.94 with his next nearest rivals being South Africa’s Graeme Pollock with 60.97 and England’s Herb Sutcliffe with 60.63.

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET SOCIETY 54th Annual Report & Financial Statements 2020~2021 to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Cricket Society Incorporated on Friday, 20th August 2021 Australian Cricket Society Inc. Established 1967 President's Report It is my pleasure to report on another highly successful and buoyant year for the Australian Cricket Society in 2020-21. Despite all the challenges of lockdowns and the nation’s roller- coasting battle with Covid-19 we have been able to complete a dozen functions in the last 12 months, albeit the majority by ‘Zoom’, allowing us to make another substantial donation to our gold charity partners the Ponting Foundation. Among the Zoom guests were Test offspinner Ashley Mallett, authors David Frith, Dan Liebke, Craig Dodson and Wes Cusworth and leading Australian women Annabel Sutherland and Rachael Haynes. We were also pleased to hold our annual dinner, which Covid- 19 had precluded from being held in 2020. Cricket’s fraternity and friendships were never more important than in July when our dinner guest, Test fast bowler James Pattinson was in touch on the Wednesday, telling me that a personal issue precluded his attendance for the Friday. There was just 48 hours to go and Victoria’s head coach Chris Rogers stepped in. Chris Rogers demonstrating how high the Master should be raising his arm when bowling! Pic by Johann Jayasinha - SNNI The ultimate insider in Australian cricket, a champion player and an even better bloke, Chris spoke for an hour about the Vics and the Aussies and also about his memorable 2013 Ashes trip when he broke through for the first of his five Test centuries at Durham.

  • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

  • Sussex CCC Vs Australia a Tourist Match Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, Arundel Sunday 7Th – Wednesday 11Th July 2019
Sussex CCC vs Australia A Tourist Match Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, Arundel Sunday 7th – Wednesday 11th July 2019 Day One Late bursts from James Pattinson and Michael Neser seized the initiative for Australia 'A' on the first day of their first-class match against Sussex at Arundel Castle. Sussex won the toss and batted after persistent drizzle prevented play from starting until just after 3.30pm. The home side made a positive start with Phil Salt (37) and Varun Chopra (30) putting on an opening stand of 69 inside 14 overs. After the pair departed to Jackson Bird and Pattinson in consecutive overs, Luke Wells and Laurie Evans then combined to take Sussex to 112 for 2 with six overs of the day remaining. What had looked like being a solid start to the match was rocked, however, with three wickets falling for just six runs. First, Neser nipped one past Evans' outside edge and knocked back his off stump. Three overs later and Pattinson - with 70 wickets in 17 Test matches behind him - beat Wells between bat and pad with the same end result. Sussex debutant, Aneesh Kapil then fended a rising Pattinson delivery to Marcus Harry in the gully, leaving Delray Rawlins and nightwatchman to see their side through to the close on 118 for 5. Day Two Delray Rawlins made the fourth century of his first-class career before Australia 'A' made Sussex's bowlers toil on day two of the tourist match at Arundel Castle. Resuming on his overnight score of five not out, Rawlins' knock was a classy affair, made all the more impressive by the fact it was scored against an Australian bowling attack boasting 277 Test match wickets.
