51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

ALTONA C.C. ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2013/14

It is with great pleasure I tender my first report to the members as President of the Altona Cricket Club. The 2013/2014 season saw sig- nificant change both on and off the field with the club promoting a greater community based agenda as well as being back where we belong on the field – in the finals.

The off season was a frenetic one with a number of signings ofex Premier cricketers in an attempt to bring a greater level of profes- sionalism into the playing group. This in turn also allowed for the development of our junior ranks who played seniors by being able to see what it takes to play at the highest level. The appointment of Shane Jones as Club captain was a highlight in the off season as Shane came to us with a wealth of Premier cricket and Australian under age experience. Couple this with the signing of Andrew McCammond and sub district sides knew Altona were once again going to be competitive.

On the field the greatest achievement was the year that Aaron Maynard had. To score over 800 runs in a year including 3 centuries and a 90 was a stellar performance that the likes of which has not been witnessed before at ACC. The manner in which Aaron accumulated runs was phenomenal and his presence at the crease and in the field assisted the junior players im- mensely.

Many new players debuted for the club this year but one most notable debutant was Dylan Ap- pleby who at 15 showed a great level of maturity and promise and with the other junior players allows us to look forward to greater things in the future.

As stated earlier we tried this year to have a greater community focus and with Glenn Paten we participated regularly in the Council initiated Sport Precinct meetings. We also for the first time organised a “Ladies / Charity day” which became our most successful function and has now been added as an annual event along with our Presidents Lunch. The charity day attracted 110 people and was a joint function with the Altona Hockey Club where over $4700 was raised for Breast West, the Melanoma Foundation and the Jane McGrath Foundation. This day will be spo- ken about for a long time to come so please keep this in mind for next year.

I would like to congratulate the U/13’s winning the premiership in the Friday Night competition and being Runners Up in the Saturday Morning competition. This along with the junior develop- ment program that was implemented as a part of the preseason campaign and Saturday ses- sions during the year means we are promoting junior cricket to the wider community whilst rais- ing the profile of the club. Well done to all involved.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

This year the club proudly announced to the cricketing world that a home grown player reached the pinnacle of playing for his country. As President I would like to congratulate James Muirhead for being selected in the Australian T20 side and wish him well for the year. Jimmy never forgets us and has played as a guest player in our T20 games and comes down when he is free. Well done Jimmy the club is proud.

Sponsorship is something that allows the club to provide the necessary resources for our on- going viability as a sporting club and this year the club realised its most successful sponsor- ship base in the clubs history. Through the enormous effort of Glenn Paten as sponsorship manager, the club were able to gain sponsors from an eclectic field of business. From the corporate sectors of mining and finance, to sporting clubs and the hotel industry. Please check the website and this report for the full list of sponsors, but I would like to acknowledge our major sponsor Royalco Resources Limited who once again supported the club greatly.

As most would have noticed the club had magnificent media coverage this year. I would like to thank Luke D’Anello from the Leader newspaper and Liam Twomey from the Star newspa- per for lifting the image of the club through the many stories and profile pieces that was pub- lished this year.

I would like to also acknowledge the following people / groups who have assisted the club this year and without their support the club would not be in the strong position it is: The Junior and Senior committees The parents who provide their children with the outlet of cricket and assist in whatever way they can to making the club a better place Our cricket department (Mark Mitchell, Michael Davenport, Jim Sheedy and Craig Duff) Hobson’s Bay Council , Cricket Victoria and the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association Ray Patton for his tireless work with the Friday night raffles at the Altona Bowling Club. All our Coterie Members All our Sponsors.

With making the finals again presents challenges of its own. The club needs to improve every year to remain competitive and this means the players need to look at the year they have just had and with the coaching staff identify areas for improvement to take their game to the next level. The club as a whole also needs to look at how we provide resources for our playing stocks to allow the club to be the most competitive we can be through all 4 grades of senior cricket as well as our junior teams. To this end I implore all members to be involved in the club in some way shape or form, from being a coterie member, to assisting with sponsorship or to purely coming along on a Saturday and watching. The committee and myself want to return our great club back to the days of playing in grand finals and Premierships and it is with the efforts of all we will achieve this. Thank you everyone for this season and I look for- ward to our senior and junior club providing us with greater success next season.

Yours Sincerely Neil Burns (President)

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

2013-14 SEASON REVIEW

The new season started at the AGM in May with the appointment of a new President, Neil Burns. Neil Birthisel, our President of 7 years, decided to end his reign and stepped down at the end of the 2012/13 season. The club thanks Neil for his tireless efforts in assisting to strengthen the brand of our great club to one that is really re- spected within the VSDCA circle. Neil continued as a club delegate to the VSDCA and also continued on as a play- er captaining our 4th XI. Thank you again Neil for your excellent contribution as President which commenced back in the 2006/07 season.

Our senior coach’s, Mark Mitchell & Michael Davenport were quickly re-appointed and the hunt for quality re- cruits began. Former Prahran and Footscray-Edgewater off-spinner, Shane Jones was appointed our new captain with other notable recruits including Andrew McCammond, Trent Smith and Peter Herrick. Former Kirk Medallist and quality top order batsman, Tim Collins, was talked out of retirement. Immediately we had included 5 new players to our first XI.

Unfortunately we lost the services of club stalwart John Varchione after it was decided the club would look else- where for a 1st XI captain. We thank John for his loyal service over his 222 games and are very sorry to see him depart the A’s. A very popular member around the club, John will be sorely missed both on and off the ground. We all wish John and Lauren the very best and hope to see them back at Altona in the future.

We needed to build our stocks following the departure of Varchie, our two English recruits, Owen Alsop and Josh Wells and the ever reliable Craig Bancroft to retirement. Other departures from our 2012-13 list included Stefan Sidari and Liam Keating who were off to try their skills at Premier Cricket Level. Congratulations to Stefan who won the 2nd XI at Footscray-Edgewater and Liam who captained the 3rd XI. The club congratu- lates these boys on their time at Altona and wish them luck at Footscray-Edgewater Cricket Club. They join the following players from Altona who are already at Premier Clubs:- James Muirhead (St.Kilda, Victorian Bushranger, Australian T20), Jake Hancock (Carlton), Matthew Wilson (Carlton), Stuart Wilson (Carlton), Ben Davies (St.Kilda), Brett Muirhead (St.Kilda), Humza Ali (Footscray- Edgewater) and Nick Donazzon (Footscray Edgewater) . Good luck boys, we will continue to follow your progress.

Pre-season training was one that started with a lot of enthusiasm. Our Senior coach’s along with Practice Captain Jim Sheedy arranged our Junior Training Academy. The number of senior players who attended these training sessions proved that the feeling of togetherness has never been stronger at Altona.

The season started with a bang, Aaron Maynard made a big ton, Andrew McCammond took five wickets with Trent Smith chiming in with 3 wickets in a big first up win. Early days, but it seemed our recruiting was going to produce some great results. Also in round 1, Anthony ‘Chippa’ ‘Luba Lips’ Rafferty also chalked up his 300th game. A magnificent effort from Chippa and one that we all celebrated around the club.

In addition there were a myriad of outstanding achievements on and off the field early in the season. Congratulations to the following people:  Recently retired, Craig Bancroft for completing the Marathon.  Colin Scott in his charity effort raising money by Riding To Fight Kids Cancer.  Neil Birthisel and his record breaking effort in becoming the highest run scorer in the club history in round 2. Neil passed Gordon Macfarlane’s record. Neil, Captain of our 4th XI, on Saturday 26th October 2013, became the highest run scorer for Altona Cricket Club across all grades. Neil scored 26 runs in the first innings against Werribee, to take his total runs scored to 6252 (320 games) to pass previous holder Gordon Macfarlane's total of 6250. A feat that excited all at the club and we all congratulate Neil on this tremendous effort.

2013-14 SEASON REVIEW

 Craig & Jake Duff became the first father son combination to play 1st XI cricket for Altona Cricket Club  Michael Davenport for organising the number one afternoon tea in the VSDCA

Craig & Jake Duff making “Where do you think our after- history as the first ‘father/ noon tea should be rated son’ combination to play ‘Dav’?” Altona Cricket Club 1st XI. (Number ONE obviously)

Whilst on the field we only had 1 team make finals, our first XI, the coach’s felt that a lot of the boys gained a great amount of experience from the season which will only bolster their confidence moving into the 2014-15 season. The enthusiasm amongst the group remained high throughout with our numbers at training always in the high 30’s and some nights exceeding 40.

Our R.M. Hatch Shield Team was professionally managed again by Craig Duff. This season we had 6 Altona regis- tered players which is the highest representation we have had in many years. Congratulations to our boys, whilst they did not make finals, they represented the club with distinction. (Full RM Hatch Report Page 77).

Off field we held some well supported social functions as listed below:-  26th October— Beers of the World  16th November— Junior Trivia Night  17th November— Inaugural All Abilities Cricket Carnival (full report pages pages 23 & 24)  21st December - Xmas Break Up  18th January— 80’s IPod Shuffle  8th February— Presidents lunch with Charlie Bezzina (full report refer page 22) Our first XI prior to taking the field for Shane Jones forgot to get  15th February — Ladies Day week 2 of the round 11 Yarraville Game dressed up for the IPod (Ladies Day) Shuffle Night (full report refer pages 25-27)  8th March — Reverse Raffle Draw  4th April — Players Trip (Gold Coast—30 attendees)  12th April — Kirk Medal Night

Congratulations to all of our Trophy Winners this season. Craig Duff stood out for his tiresome work around the club which earned him the Ray Patton Best Club Person Award. Craig once again coached our RM Hatch side. He worked tirelessly around the club managing our equipment, often putting the covers out on his own, managed to continue to hold his own playing in our first XI and spent tireless hours assisting others with their game. Also in the running for the Ray Patton Award were Janine Grubb for her work with the seniors and juniors. Janine stepped up to take over the first XI scoring when Christine Howard was struck down due to illness. Craig ’Bangers’ Bancroft was a breath of fresh air around the club this season following his playing retirement. His weekly emails were one to look forward to keeping everyone abreast of social activities, the ’ pond’ and of course the media fines. He was a great back up for Azza feeding us all on Thursday nights and assisting with the ‘players trip’. Our fi- nal nominee this season was Michael Davenport. His work with the afternoon tea’s often earned Altona the follow- ing quote from opposition players ’that is the best afternoon tea I have ever had’.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

2013-14 SEASON REVIEW

The club was very proud this season to raise funds for charity. The charity’s chosen to support were McGrath Foundation, Breast West, and March Against Melanoma. This was instigated by some of the girls around the club wanting to support a Ladies Day and really gained strength when Christine Howard was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. It was decided to support the McGrath Foundation and Breast West who support breast cancer sufferers within the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Former champion player and committee member, Merryn Brennan, approached the club to join forces with the Altona Hockey Club to promote Melanoma awareness. It was decided to also support ‘March Against Melanoma’. The afternoon was a great day, despite the oppressive heat and humidity, which saw us raise and donate $4,661.95 to these very worthwhile charities. (See pages 25 to 27 for the report on Ladies Day)

A special thank you to club legend, Ray ‘Fish’ Patton. Fish continues his great work for the club by managing the Friday Night raffle at the Altona Bowling Club. Is it any wonder the Best Club Person Award is named in Fish’s honour. We need to get as many members along to the Altona Bowling Club from 6pm on a Friday Night to support the Raffle. Become a Bowling Club Social Member ($20 per year) and you could be the winner of the ‘lucky members draw’ and take home between $200 and $1,000. Drawn every Friday Night at 7pm.

Congratulations to Darren McConville, Ian Mackenzie and the entire junior sub-committee again on an excel- lent job leading our junior club. Our junior program has certainly taken on a refreshed level of professionalism since your involvement. To all the members of the junior committee, all junior coach’s, team managers and scorers, a big thank you for your efforts throughout the season in teaching and developing our junior players. We need each and everyone of you for this club to prosper. (See pages 64 to 78 for full Junior Report)

A big thank you to all of our scorers who assisted our senior teams, Christine Howard, Janine Grubb, Debbie Wilson, Sian Donazzon, Dee Cullen. Apologies if I have forgotten anyone other than the players who assisted with scoring. Thank you again to our Practice Captain and First XI Team Manager, Jim Sheedy. Once again en- suring our players are looked after better than any other team at any other Subbies Club.

Everyone around the club would like to wish Christine Howard all the strength as she continues to battle her way through breast cancer. The great news is Christine is feeling well, in between treatments, and hopes to be back scoring again next season. You continue to be in our thoughts Christine.

The club continues to strive to raise funds to improve our training facilities. We currently have 4 hard nets and when available we have two turf nets. During periods of inclement weather, which seems to be the norm, the hard wicket facilities are insufficient for our needs. The club is in the process of drawing up plans and hope to obtain quotes to complete construction. Unfortunately we are expecting quotes to come in at around $200K+. We hope to raise sufficient funds to cover half this amount prior to approaching council to assist with the balance. We are well on our way with our investment account balance recently reaching $50K, these funds are to be used solely for this purpose. We hope to have the plans on show within the club rooms during the 2014/15 season.

Club’s like ours cannot survive without the volunteers who offer their time to assist with the improvement of our club. To all of our volunteers we solute you. THANK YOU.

2013-14 SEASON REVIEW

To our major partners, Peter Topham, Bruce Pertzel and Nick Boicos from Royalco Resources Ltd. A big thank you for jumping on board again with the club. Your contribution is invaluable to the on going success of our club both on and off the field.

Neil Burns continued his effort in growing our Coterie Group, ‘The Purple and Gold Boys’ and ‘The Past Players’ in season 2013-14. This has proven very successful in not only a financial sense but also giving a lot of our past champions, players and officials, another reason to re-associate themselves with the club. The feedback from the Coterie members has been overwhelmingly positive and was capped off by an outstanding Presidents/Coterie Group luncheon which saw this years guests entertained by, Retired Detective Senior Sergeant of Police, Charlie Bezzina. Great job again Ecka.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 Youngster James Muirhead revels in claiming 6 English wickets in Ashes warm up

For the past two decades, Shane Warne, England's chief nemesis, has sparred with the arch enemy on both sides of the rope and 20-year-old, James Muirhead, needed little encouragement to join the party after dismissing (35) and Kevin Pietersen (57) within the space of six balls of each other for the Cricket Australia Invitational XI.

"It was a great privilege to get them out," Muirhead said.

"It was good to get Bell out because I knew Warney always got him out for fun, so it was a pretty satisfying moment.

"Before the game I said to the boys I really want to bowl to Pietersen - he's the one batsman I want to bowl to.

"Obviously he plays spin really well and I knew he'd come really hard at me so to get him out -I know I got hit for a few sixes - but I was just enjoying the moment."

Having made his first-class debut against earlier this year, Muirhead claimed the wickets of and Joe Mennie but has now added two of the game's biggest names to his resume.

Plying his trade for St Kilda and the Bushrangers like Warne before him, the young gun said the Test legend had advised him on remaining mentally strong when bowling to Pietersen.

"It was pretty daunting, but as a leg-spin bowler you've just got to accept you get hit for sixes and you've just got to stick at it, be confident in what you do and sometimes you get the rewards, like I did today," Muirhead said.

Muirhead enjoyed a great game taking 4 wickets in England’s first innings total of 418 including the scalps of Kevin Pieterson and Ian Bell. In England’s second innings of 3 for 151, Muirhead took 2 for 66 including the prized scalp of England captain, Alastair Cook.

AUSTRALIAN CRICKETER, JAMES MUIRHEAD, TO REPRESENT ALTONA AGAIN.

It promises to be a great occasion for Altona Cricket Club as we welcome back young Australian Leg Spinner, James Muirhead, for the club’s second T20 game this Tuesday 26th November. The game to be played at Kirk Oval, Grant Reserve against Yarraville, commences at 5pm.

James is fresh from his successful game representing Cricket Australia’s Invitation XI against the touring Englishmen in Sydney where he took 6 wickets including the scalps of Alastair Cook, Ian Bell and Kevin Pieterson.

An excited President, Neil Burns said “It is great James wants to come back and represent this great club at every opportunity. I know the young guys in our side are really excited and are jumping out of their skin to be picked in the same side as James. We would hope James will attract a big crowd following his great performance for the Australian Invitation XI last week”

There are no excuses not to come along and support James and the A’s as we take on the Yarraville Eagles. The barbeque will be roaring so bring the family and enjoy an evening of FREE T20 cricket.

Altona boasting 6 players under the age of 20 including 1st gamers Matt Davis and Toby Brookes accounted for Williamstown in a closely fought encounter in the 1st of the mid-week T20 matches. Altona first made 6 for 138 off their 20 overs. Aaron Maynard continuing his great start to the season with a quickfire 50 off 21 balls. In reply Williamstown challenged hard but could manage only 5 for 135 in reply. A big thank you to our guest player, 18 year old Stefan Sidari, who was recently invited to join Footscray-Edgewater from Altona.

ALTONA TO AUSTRALIA “You’re in the Australian Squad”

James Muirhead was about to drive to dinner on Sunday night with his father, Matt, when his phone rang with an "unknown number". Muirhead, 20, moved to reject the call until his father urged him to answer what became the voice of Cricket Aus- tralia's selection chairman, John Inverarity. Small talk aside, Muirhead put his phone on speaker so Matt could hear the words that "freaked me out" - 'you're in the Australian Twenty20 squad'.

It capped an extraordinary rise for the Altona leg-spinner who has played just two first-class matches and four Big Bash League matches, but has three impressive - and feisty - tour game showings against England to his credit this summer. But with Inverarity restating his desire to find a future Test wrist spinner, Muirhead's ability to impart a lot of spin won the day. "He's impressed this season when he's played against England … he puts a lot on the ball, and his leg break turns," Inver- arity said.

Muirhead said "not in his wildest dreams" had he contemplated the call-up for the three-match series after only recently getting a call-up to the Melbourne Stars' list. Before that, he'd spent a gameless BBL season with the Renegades last summer and managed just two matches for the Strikers in 2011-12. But when he landed a perfect leg-break in his first Stars over to bewilder and have him on January 9, his world literally turned.

"To play international cricket at age 20, I wasn't expecting it. But I feel like I'm up for it and I can't wait to hopefully get a crack," he said.

That spirit has been a key in Muirhead's rise. He takes a backward step for nobody, as evidenced by the venom the English players directed at him in Alice Springs in December after he rankled a few of the tourists during their tour match in Sydney a month earlier.

But he's also a student of the game, even under fire.

"Alice Springs was a good experience. I got to meet a few of the (England) boys like Matty Prior and have a bit of a chat with him. He was just saying keep calm and you're doing really good. He was just saying you had to find a way to deal with these pressures. I'm still learning my game and learning how to bowl leg spin, so every challenge I get put forward to me, I'm just taking it with both hands."

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 Muirhead joins Sri Lankan club

Spinner taking road less travelled

James Muirhead is one of four young Australians breaking new ground by linking up with Sri Lankan cricket clubs for a stint throughout June.

Muirhead, whose rapid rise culminated in selection in Australia’s squad for the ICC World T20 in March, will be joined by fellow young guns Ashton Agar, William Bosisto and for the 2014 Under-23 Division 1 domestic Tournament.

The 20-year-old leg-spinner is currently at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. “We’ve got great facilities up here now – the facilities are world-class,” he told cricket.com.au. “The coaches are great, and we’ve got really good resources to use. I’ve been here for three-and-a-half weeks now, and I’m here for another week before I head to for four weeks. I’m being put up by a club (Moors) there, and I play three three-day games, and a few one- dayers and so it should be great.” Muirhead believes the Sri Lankan stint can only benefit him in terms of his education and career aspirations.

“I had the experience of Sri Lanka with the national program last year, but I didn’t get to play with a club – I just trained, got a feeling for the conditions,” he explained. “Now I get the opportunity to play against Sri Lankans, who are very different to our batsmen, and in their conditions, so it’s going to be a real challenge. There’s a hell of a lot to learn, so any time you can get over there is vital. There’s always something new to learn any time you go over there, so that’s what I’m planning to do, and then if I get a chance to go back there with Australia, I’ve got something new to put in my game.”

Typically confident, the Victorian believes the experience he has already gained on the subcontinent will hold him in good stead this time around.

“Playing in those kind of conditions – turning, dry, really hot – was something new to me, so I was fortunate to experience that (in Bangladesh),” he said. Now I’ve been to India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, so I’ve had a bit experience in the subcontinental countries and I really like bowling in those conditions, where it’s turning pretty big and batsmen are playing into my favour by playing pretty aggressive, so if they do that, well, look out.”

The clubrooms were a buzz in anticipation of the club’s President luncheon held at the clubrooms Saturday, 8th February, despite the mercury rising to beyond 40 degrees. President and ‘Purple and Gold’ Coterie or- ganiser, Neil ‘Ecka’ Burns, worked tirelessly in the preceding weeks to ensure all ran smoothly.

President Burns had arranged our guest speaker, Charlie Bezzina (with some help from Michael Davenport), to present at the luncheon. Charlie is a retired Detective Senior Sergeant of Police and author of the well recognised Non Fiction Crime Novel ‘The Job”. 51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 WESTERN REGION ALL ABILITIES CRICKET CARNIVAL Altona Cricket Club

Altona Cricket Club in association with Leisure Networks Victoria hosted the inaugural Western Region All Abilities Cricket Carnival on Sunday 17th November. 100 players made up 10 teams participating in the cricket carnival held at Grant Reserve Altona. When asked for his opinion of the day, Altona Cricket Club’s Glenn Paten beamed ‘At our first attempt, to attract 100 players to participate travelling from Geelong and Croydon was just amazing. The weath- er turned it on for us as well, it was a great day.’ Teams were split into an A grade competition and a B grade competition depending on player ability. 6 teams competed in the A competition, 2 from Altona, 2 from Barwon, 1 from Croydon and 1 from Wyndham. Each of these teams also entered a team in the B competition. Rick Trezise, Team Manager from Barwon, stated ‘Some of these boys and girls are really talented and it is our hope that we can get more of our players venturing into playing mainstream cricket’ Altona Cricket Club, with the four ovals so closely located is the ideal setting for a carnival of this size. There was a game proceeding on all 4 ovals from 10am until 3pm with every player participating in each game. The intensity of the games was very high, whilst hotly contested, the games were played in the right spirit.

Altona Team Manager Lorraine Woodman was full of praise for the efforts of Altona Cricket Club ‘Thank you all for your great support, days like this do not happen without volunteer workers. We appreciate our affiliation with Altona Cricket Club. Our guys and girls had a wonderful day, even without making a finals play off. Some players experienced out door cricket for the very first time and were very excited’. Wyndham B and Geelong B contested the B final with Wyndham reigning supreme. Wyndham A and Croydon A earned the right to participate in the A competition Grand Final with Wyndham undefeated on 16 points and Croydon on 12 points. Croydon batted first and got off to a flyer with their opening batsman scoring 24 off the first two overs. Croydon slowed after their initial overs and after their 10 overs finished with 8 for 64. In reply Wyndham maintained a steady pace throughout and eventually passed Croydon’s score with a 6 off the second last ball of their innings. Wyndham’s final score was 7 for 67. ACC & AHC RAISE $4,661.95 FOR CHARITY

Altona Cricket and Hockey Clubs joined forces on Saturday 15th February to raise funds for three lifesaving charities. The charities were the McGrath Foundation, The Western Health Foundation and March Against Melanoma Foundation.

Neil Burns, President of Altona Cricket Club (ACC) and Merryn Brennan, Committee Member of Altona Hockey Club (and former ACC Treasurer and champion player) were the key players in arranging the event.

110 guests gathered at a catered luncheon held at the rooms of Altona Cricket Club. Neil Burns opened the luncheon stating “As a club we’ve been affected by both Melanoma and Breast Cancer. Our Life member Christine Howard being diagnosed with breast cancer late last year shocked us all. A good friend of the club Kerry O’Donovan has also been affected and is fighting her way through treatment. Of course both clubs are familiar with Merryn Brennan’s fight with Melanoma over the last decade or so. We are very proud that both club’s have come together to raise funds to assist the fight against both these illnesses.”

Merryn Brennan shared her story to all in the room about the shattering effect to her life when being diagnosed with Melanoma, for the first time back in 2001. Merryn could not accept the initial diagnoses of two different doctors that the lump she found in her shoulder was nothing to worry about. ‘It just didn’t feel right’, so Merryn obtained a third opinion. After further diagnosis, this lump was now being referred to as a stage 2 malignant melanoma which had encased itself into a lymph node. It was at this stage Merryn was advised she had a 40% chance of survival. A shattering diagnosis to receive at 38 years of age when you have two young children.

After being subjected to years of further injections, blood tests, CT scans, PET Scans, Merryn received further bad news in January 2004, the location of an aggressive tumour in her left knee. This time Merryn’s Melanoma was being re- ferred to as Stage 4 Cancer. Merryn underwent surgery to remove her left knee and a large part of her femur bone. Pri- or to the surgery, Merryn was advised, depending on what the surgeons found when they operated, she may lose her left leg. Fortunately, all went well.

It has now been 10 years since Merryn’s operation and she still hasn’t heard the words ‘You’re cured’. Merryn’s mes- sage was a heartfelt message, if you think something doesn’t feel right and you are not happy with your first diagnosis, get a second or third opinion. Take extreme care and beware of the power of the sun. Sunscreen may not be enough, cover up.

Neil Burns (Altona Cricket Club President) with Yes there was a game of cricket on. Some of our guests escaping the dance

Sandra Wilson (Mayor of Hobsons Bay) floor for some fresh air taking in the Altona v’s Yarraville 1st XI match.

Neil Burns concluded formalities stating “Whilst both clubs already do great community work by providing friendly and safe sporting environments for juniors and adults within the local community, it is really satisfying to be able to create awareness of the work of these charities. Even more satisfying to be able to raise funds for these charities that may as- sist in further research or assisting those in the community who may be affected by Breast Cancer or Melanoma.”

The funds raised on the day totalled $4,661.95. These funds have now been distributed to the three foundations as follows:-

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL COACH’S REPORT 2012/13

Jim Sheedy, Mike Davenport and Mark Mitchell Our annual report last year finished with a line challenging who would be the next champion player. We think there is no doubt that Aaron Maynard absolutely stood up & not only declared himself as one of the great bats of the Altona Cricket Club but also of the VSDCA. One of the best standout years any of us have been associated with - congratulations Aaron on scoring over 800 runs this season. Our junior development continued to flourish this year. Dylan Appleby made his debut in the 1st XI. A remarka- ble effort given he played 4ths last year. At 16 years of age he has a very bright future ahead of him. Matt Davis also debuted in the first XI along with Jake Duff & our other new recruits in Shane Jones, Andy Mac- Cammond, Peter Herrick & Trent Smith. Alex Canals also worked his way back into the 1st XI. Tim Col- lins & Craig Duff re appeared & provided some very good experience around the playing group. That was 10 new faces that helped shape the changes needed to become a finals contender this year. Our 2nd XI started to build depth this year which is really encouraging for our 1st XI in the years ahead. 26 play- ers rotated through this team. The shining light this year being chips Rafferty as captain. A great cricket brain who certainly brought a lot to the selection table each week. Zane Donazzon, Jake King, Mitch Grubb, Mitchell Cullen, Toby Brooks, Jordan Roach, Connor Scott, Luke Wilson, Ben Murfett, Shannon Clarke- these young guys are the future of our club who we are sure will all step up next year and become strong contributors. Our 3rds & 4ths continued to blood & develop our juniors at a great rate. We are now in the position where we have a number of young junior players with games under their belt. 6 months down the track they will be better players again. So where to from here?? As a group we need to continue to work on the basics. If we look at all the top sides we played this year we no- tice that they only do the basics but they do them very often & they do them well. They bowl off stump, they run hard between the wickets, they have a good defence, they field well & they do all of this every ball. That's our challenge next year. We have worked hard this year to help bridge the gap between junior & senior cricket. We will continue this again next year. We have some great kids coming through & we will keep working with the junior coaches to bring this talent to senior level. A quick thank you to Darren McConville & Ian McKenzie for allowing us to run coaching sessions with the juniors throughout the year. Your support in this process has been enormous. Congratulations to Danny Zavitero on coaching the under 17's. The link between the under 17's & the seniors is an important one & we thank Danny for his help this year.

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL COACH’S REPORT 2012/13

This year also saw a significant change in our leadership style. The decision to appoint Shane Jones as Captain of our 1st XI this year has paid great dividends. It has seen the turnaround of a few players which has been good for the club. One of our proudest moments this year came during the week of the finals. We had many texts & well wishes plus we had a number of people turn up & train with the first XI group. On top of all that we had just about every senior player, plus family & friends turn up to see us play against Werribee. It wasn't just our 1st XI on display it was the whole Altona Cricket Club. This year has seen a significant improvement in this area & we hope to build on that again next year. This has been represented in the great results in our Spirit of Cricket Award. In closing, we would like to thank everyone within the club and also those outside it who continue to support us each week in what we are aiming to do with our player development.

To every person who has helped with scoring, providing drinks, been a team manager or helped with afternoon tea we thank you very much. Without your help & support this club ceases to function at the level it does.

To our captains, Shane Jones, Tony Rafferty, John Donnazen, Sean McCartney & Neil Birthisel. Great job this year. Each week we have a challenge to harness the youth along with trying to win a game of cricket. You guys do a great job. Selection is sometimes tough but we have a great laugh along the way. We look forward to work- ing with you again next year.

To the committee- thank you. They continually support us in all endeavours from recruitment to providing the best playing facilities we possibly can.

To Christine Howard- our thoughts are always with you & can't wait to have you back. A special thank you to Janine Grubb for stepping in and doing a great job for us.

To our players, we thank you once again. We have a great culture at this club. Good quality people everywhere we look. Our challenge next year is to take this club from GOOD to GREAT. We hope you want to be a part of that!! Mark Mitchell Jim Sheedy Mike Davenport

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 ALTONA C.C. 51st ANNUAL 2ND XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2013/14

2013/14 season was a season of many ups and downs, a lot of changes and some incredible moments. From a personal point of view, this was the first time I had captained a senior team which I thank the entire club for the opportunity and honour of representing the club and enjoyed every minute of the season.

Congratulations to all 16 players that played 1st eleven cricket this year and it was great to see numerous players who played their first games for the Altona Cricket Club in the 1st eleven this year including Trent Smith, Peter Herrick, Andrew McCammond, Matthew Da- vis, Dylan Appelby and myself. It was great to see Alex Canals and Tim Collins also return to the club after periods away.

We had a fantastic start to the season with some great personal achievements in the first game of the season against Mt Waverley with the incredibly talented Aaron Maynard making his debut 1st XI One Day hundred for the club with 103 not out in a total score of 5/191. Star Recruit Andrew McCammond lead the attack and dismissal of Mt Waverley for 68 by taking 5/19 in his first game in Altona colours with fellow debutant Trent Smith chipping in with 3/12 off 8.4 overs.

In the first half of the year we looked in good form and were looking at a top 3 finish sitting 5 and 2 at the Christmas break. The likes of Aaron Maynard, Josh Young, and Tim Collins had all made solid contributions with the bat, and McCam- mond, Smith, Elmore, Duff, and Grubb looked solid with the ball and we looked in good stead for the finals series.

Incredibly with 12 1st eleven players having injuries throughout the year, 4 losses and only 2 wins after the break Altona had snuck into the finals with a gutsy win over Endeavour Hills in the last game of the year. Again this was lead by Maynard who finished the main season off with 113 and a vital 18 not out and 3/35 by Lee Elmore.

Finishing 6th and playing ladder leaders Werribee we were looking forward to the challenge and played our hearts out. Coming from 5/52 Maynard and Elmore set the tone with 92 not out and 44 not out respectively to lead Altona to 5/163 off 73.3 overs. Werribee were set the task of chasing down this score in 76 overs, but with time lost to weather Werribee managed to keep wickets in hand and finish the day on 5/124. The club could not have been any prouder of the work the whole bowling and fielding group put together in this final game but with lost time during the weekend Werribee were awarded the game. The WHOLE 1st eleven team held their heads up high and nothing was left on the track.

We took leaps and bounds this year with Josh Young showing great potential with the bat until a season ending injury, Dylan Appleby coming from the 4th XI the season before to debuting in the 1sts, James Grubb’s improvement with the ball with 10 wickets in the second half of the year, Aaron Maynards 810 run season was awesome with scores of 103no, 82no, 81no, 111, 113 and 92no in the final, 6 debutants and an appearance in the finals was a fantastic effort.

A big thank you goes out to the committee members, supporters, coaching staff and especially Christine Howard, Janine Grubb and Jim Sheedy for all their help during the year. This DOES NOT go unnoticed by the 1st Eleven and we thoroughly appreciate all your support and efforts.

We still have a lot of improvement to be made in season 2014/15 to take the next step. The Altona Cricket Club is going in the right direction and with the talent that is coming through all grades this will hold us in good stead into the future. Be- lieve and respect the club colours you wear and play for.

Bring on 2014/15!!

Jonesy

AZZA makes ‘VSDCA Team of the Year’ Again!

Aaron Maynard capped off a stellar year by making the Victorian Sub-District 2013-14 Team of the Year. Aaron was named to bat at number three in the star studded line up. This is the second time Aaron has been named in the Team of the Year following his break out year in 2011-12. This season Aaron made 810 runs with an amazing average of 81. This run tally is a club record and shows the dominance he displayed with the bat this year. He made three centuries this season which is also a club record for the first XI. He backed this up with 3 further scores above 50 including a magnificent 92 not out in the qualifying final against Werribee. To top off his year Aaron also took 7 wickets and was involved in a first XI 6th wicket partnership record with close mate, Lee Elmore. The experienced pair piled on an unbeaten 111, also in the qualifying final against Werribee. Aaron is now involved in 6 of the first XI partnership records and 1 all time club partner- ship record. As well as being a great cricketer Aaron is also a great club person. He is regularly seen in the kitchen on a Thursday Night, co-ordinates the betting syndicate and is instrumental in arranging the end-of season play- ers trip. We had a record 30 attendees on the trip this season which proves the great morale held within the playing group. This is certainly a reflection of Aaron’s influence over the club. In addition to being named in the VSDCA Team of the year at the VSDCA Presentation Night, Aaron won the following awards at our very own Kirk Medal Dinner,  Kirk Medal (1st XI Best & Fairest)  Mick Jenkins Memorial Shield (1st XI Batting)  Wayne Patton Memorial Shield (Club Championship) Congratulations Azza again on a fantastic season. We all look forward to watching you out in the middle again next season.

ALTONA C.C. 51st ANNUAL 2ND XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2013/14

The 2013/14 season was always going to be a challenge, and managed to become even more difficult as the year wore on.

With the minimum of senior experience our focus was centred on development. Through training session’s pre season and the pre-season proper a core of young talent was identified as possible candidates to represent the club at a second eleven level. Through injuries sus- tained to both the first and second elevens the initial core group were fast tracked and provid- 2nd XI Captain Anthony Rafferty ed opportunities for others to be given an opportunity. Overall 27 players rotated through the second eleven throughout the course of the year. In most games we had two players above the age of forty and nine under the age of eighteen.

Things we focussed on were:

 Knowing your role within the team

 Knowing your role on the field

 Knowing your role while team mates were batting

We saw significant traction within these points as the year progressed. It’s a starting point but the main aim is to pre- pare the boys and set expectations for what is required at senior level.

Throughout the year there were some great performances.

James Grubb:

We worked with James’ bowling during the pre-season. This worked flowed through to Saturdays with some credita- ble performances with the ball. On the back of a 69no against Sunshine James seen himself promoted to the firsts where he remained for the rest of the year. In the QF Final against Werribee James opened the bowling and returned figures of 13 over’s 1/18

Matt Davis:

Matt had a slow start to the season but in round four amassed 105no against Noble Park and top scored with a 37 the following week. It was on the back of these performances that he pushed his way into the first eleven where he remained for the rest of the year. Personally it was the maturity Matt displayed throughout the year which was a highlight.

ALTONA C.C. 51st ANNUAL 2ND XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2013/14

Dylan Appleby:

Dylan got an opportunity with the group in round two after a creditable performance in the thirds. Dylan debuted with a 38 against Werribee, and the following game opened the batting. With a refreshing no fear approach Dylan went about the job in fine style. With a 42 against Noble Park and a 79 against Box Hill dreams were answered and Dylan found himself in the first eleven at age 15. A remarkable achievement at such an early age from forth eleven to first eleven within twelve months. A great personality and willing to take advice and wright the 2nd XI Captain Anthony Rafferty wrongs of previous failings.

Shannon Clarke:

We have seen significant change in Shannon this year. Of the field and training track still needs a bit of work but on field quickly found himself one of the first picked come selection nights. Shannon found he was bowling into the wind the majority of the year turning into that stock bowler every team needs. Without taking any big hauls, consist- ently he was among the wicket takers. Shannon played every game and took wickets in eleven of thirteen a great effort.

Special mentions goes to Zane Donazzon and Jake King. Zane got an opportunity in the side and put together back to back fifties before getting injured. Jake King pushed into the line up late in the season opening the bowling. Both boys have plenty of upside and will be great players for the club.

The inconsistency was a reflection of the inexperience but as a team and a club with a vision a season that we’ll re- flect back on in years to come. Plenty of talent and all players will return bigger and stronger having tasted cricket at this level.

Lastly thanks to Debbie Wilson for scoring and all parents who helped throughout the year as the support was inval- uable.

Thanks for the opportunity.

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

ALTONA C.C. 51st ANNUAL 3RD XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2013/14

Once again it was a good season for development, more than a year for success with wins. The 3rds finished 10th, with 5 wins and 8 losses. It was pleasing to witness the competitiveness of the team in most of the games played this season. 3rd XI Captain John Donazzon We had beaten 2 of the top 6 sides, (Ivanhoe & Werribee), including one of the even- tual Grand Finalists, Ivanhoe. We also beat 4 of the top 8 sides. Probably the most dis- appointing, was that we were beaten by 3 of the 4 teams below us on the ladder. At one stage we were a real chance to make the top 6. This was considering that of the 28 players to play 3rds: 2 under 15’s 9 under 17’s 7 players 21 or below 5 players 20-30 years of age

5 players over 40 We can see that more than half of the side was 21 or under (18 of 28 players). The promotion of 12 players to higher levels within the club was very satisfying to see as a captain. Six of these players still playing junior cricket in U15 or U17 went on to play for the two’s. One of the 6 (Dylan Appleby) also went on to play 1sts during the season. The T20 competition also had 5 players that were members of the 3rds at one time or another throughout the season. In the last 2 – 3 rounds of the season, the 2nd XI had no less than 6 players that began their year in the 3rds. Individual highlights of outstanding effort: J.Hicks : 148 – R8 v Balwyn L.Wilson: 150 - R12 v Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows N. Zavattiero: 5/53- R10 v Ivanhoe

Some team highlights for the year : Scoring over 300 runs in 2 consecutive games, (one being a 1 dayer, and unfortunately the score wasn’t high enough to win!!), and other games , scoring close to 250. These scores showed in the statistics for the league…Altona had the highest run score in the 3rds competition – 2538 runs. However our downfall was the ability to take wickets and concede runs, ranked 13 from 13.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

The season in review:

Rd 1 v Kew First game for the year, and it saw us take on the Premiers of 2012/13. Altona put on a credible 8-187 off 45, good batting with Colin Scott making 56. Kew got the runs with only 8 balls to spare. This was thanks to the Kew batsmen that had played Premier cricket. Jake King took the bowling honours with 4 for 24.

Rd2 v Werribee Our first 2 dayer. This was a great innings by Altona. Winning the toss, and batting first on one of the worst pitches, (the ball was grubbing in the first over). Altona made 208. John Varchione making a patient 64. Week two saw a much better wicket, and saw us bowl them out for 130.

Rd3 v Sunshine Round 3 saw us play Sunshine at home in a one dayer. After winning the toss and batting, we made 6-214, with Colin Scott 83 not out. We had Sunshine 7-48, eventually bowling them out for 160. Star bowler for the day was Sean McCartney taking 4-19.

Rd4 v Brunswick Another one day game at Brunswick…On a wet track, we lost the toss…Game over!! Altona bowled out for 81, Bruns- wick made the runs within 14 overs.

Rd5 v Preston Playing at home in another 1 dayer, and batting first, we made 143, bowled out in under 40 overs. Preston, eventual Premiers, made the runs within 41 overs, only losing 6 wickets. If only we had batted out the game…Ben Murfet best of the bowlers 3-39.

Rd6 v Melton This was probably one of our worst performances for the year. After again winning the toss in a 2 dayer, we were bowled out for 135 in only 52 overs. In the second week, Melton batted on to make 6-272. This game saw the team play with 3 injured bowlers, and with a lack of fielders and batsmen, the young bowlers battled it out.

Rd7 v Williamstown Again winning to the toss and batting, Altona played out the 80 overs to make 230. John Varchione starred making 85. The second week saw Williamstown be reduced to 9-221 in their 80 overs. Andrew Caleca in his first game for the 3rds taking 3 wickets.

Rd8 v Plenty Valley First game after Christmas break saw us take on one of the top sides, Plenty Valley. Again winning the toss, we sent Plenty Valley into bat, on one of the worst, green looking wickets. We bowled Plenty Valley out for 146 in 41 overs. Great chance to get a win, but our batting unfortunately folded for us to be all out for 115 in 32 overs. Sebastian Canals and Andrew Caleca taking 3 a piece.

Rd9 v Balwyn In one of the most amazing games, we once again won the toss in a one dayer and batted. We made an outstanding 5- 308 in 45 overs. James Hicks making a glorious 148 being the highlight. Many thought this would be enough to beat Balwyn…but once again, they made the runs with 7 wickets down and 2 overs to spare. Over 600 runs scored for the day…

Rd10 v Ivanhoe Winning the toss in another 2 dayer, Altona chose to open the batting, putting on another fabulous score of more than 300 runs, eventually bowled out for 306 in less than 72 overs. Ivanhoe were bowled out for 268 in 63 overs. Star with the ball was Nick Zavattiero 5-53 off 12, and star with the bat Mitchell Grubb 82.

Rd11 v Yarraville This round saw us play a lowly side in a one dayer. After losing the toss and being thrown in on a wet track, the game was over… Altona all out for 67 in 37 overs. Yarraville made the runs in 15 overs, losing 5 wickets.

Rd12 v Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows In the second last game for the season, we once again won the toss and batted. An amazing 150 for Luke Wilson saw us make 267. Roxburgh Park bowled out for 157 in 64 overs. Sebastian Canals taking 3 wickets.

45

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

Rd13 v Coburg Last game for the year saw us play Coburg in Coburg. After throwing them in to bat in a one day game, they made 7-252 in 45 overs. In reply, Altona were competitive, failing to beat their score by only 6 runs. Batsman for the game was Colin Scott with 64 runs, this taking his total run score for the season to over 300. Jordan Heggarty the bowler of the game taking 3 wickets.

Season summary:

As we can see, we had a great chance to win another 5 games, all of which went down to the wire, another two were decided by the toss of the coin.

This season’s result was an improvement from last year, that saw Altona 3rds only winning only 3 games.

Thank you to all of the coaches for your support and time in 2013/14. My thanks also goes to Sean McCartney for replacing me as captain for the last 3 games of the season. I would also like to acknowledge my appreciation and thanks for the help given to me by the scorers, and helpers, namely: Sian, DeeDee & Rob Cullen, the Grubb family and supporters.

As stated previously, we have a very young side, and if the young guys put their mind and apply themselves to being the best cricketers they can be, success will come, and progression will follow… John Donazzon

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

ALTONA C.C. 51st ANNUAL 4TH XI

CAPTAINS REPORT 2013/14

It was an interesting season for one and all in the 4thXI for 2013/14, while the records show we may have only won three games the team was more competitive and ‘in the game’ for longer periods than in the past!

This season there were 25 players who passed through the 4thXI ranks, 10 of those were under seventeen of which 4 were under fifteen and on the opposite end of the spectrum we had 6 players over the age of 40 which just extrapolates the huge age difference. 4th XI Captain Neil Birthisel

What I can say about the season is that every player tried their best when playing, we had lots of laughs, a cou- ple of disappointing times however over all we played some very good cricket albeit in small spurts rather than a consistent periods over the season. The highlights for me were the emerging talent of William McConville with bat, ball and keeping, Jack Papachatzakis with a great attitude wanting to improve his cricket and Daniel Mackenzie who finished off the year in the thirds. Other highlights were Darren McConville coming back to play after sixteen years out of the game, his true competitive nature was a great example to other team members ‘you only get out of it what to put into it’! He had a great personal year as well, winning the bowling average and would have probably won the batting if it wasn’t for his cameo appearance in the thirds. Frank Murphy playing his first competitive game of cricket in over twenty eight years, seeing Andrew Peters and Vince Cutajar working hard at improving different aspects of their game was pleasing and it would be remiss of me not to mention cult figure Stephen ‘Pingi’ Daff making his highest ever score in cricket and finally Andrew ‘Tellastory’ Caleca who had a great season with the ball but not so much with the bat.

I would like to thank the Club and Coaches for the opportunity to Captain my third different XI at the club. Mark, Michael and Jim as a coaching panel have a wonderful passion for wanting the whole club to improve and while you cannot please everyone I think their efforts have been outstanding! Being a captain brings a few different responsibilities and can consume a bit of your time other than on the field, a HUGE thank you to Vince Cutajar who made my job so much easier, words cannot thank him enough.

Finally, as a whole the lower grades may have struggled a bit this year however you have to look at the big pic- ture and see what the Club and Coaches are trying to achieve and that is to build a consistent competitiveness for spots in all grades and that can only occur if everyone buy’s into the plan and they work hard at their own fitness and deficiencies in their game. Stick with it guy’s because at the end of the day it is only a game but then again it is what the game can give back to you that is more important.

Cheers and see you next year

Birtha

ALTONA C.C. 51st ANNUAL U/17’s COACHES REPORT

It was a privilege to manage the U17 team in season 2013/14. Most of the team was fresh up from the U15 with only three top age players and with a predominantly young side, expecta- tions were mixed at the start of the season as to how we'd go. However, the season started with a burst as we won our first three games - the strong pre-season and winter program clear- ly paying off. Our bowling was led by Toby Brooks and Jordan Hegarty, with strong support from Jake King and Mitch Cullen amongst oth- ers. Our batting was very strong at the top with four half centuries in the first three games (Appleby 93, Hicks 56 against Point Cook in R2, and Grubb 90, Hicks 52 against Yarraville in R3). In R4 we suffered our first loss and from there struggled to recover as we lost confidence and momentum. In R6, a strong middle order partnership between Appleby 61 and Zavattiero 42 failed to generate a a serious run chase against Hoppers Crossing in a disappointing loss. Our season ended with a high against Melton where a tough bowling and fielding driven win away was achieved defending a score in the low 100's. Melton were flag favourites until that win. Our successful and unexpected defense of the Sunday Bash title was another huge highlight and well deserved on a hot day in February. Club members should feel proud of the way our young men represented the Altona Cricket Club. On several occasions coaches, opposition parents and umpires commented on the attitude of our boys - they played good hard competitive crick- et but with a sporting spirit we expect from mature young men. At this age, they knew many of their opponents and had played with several of them in various representative team competitions. The U17 team should look forward very positively to season 2014/15 with a strong top-age player contingent, ably joined by excellent players coming up from the U15. I thank the boys for their support and wish them well for next year. Particular best wishes to 2013/14 top age players - Roache, Hicks and Hegarty who now embark on their seniors careers.

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

A’s U17 T20 Carnival win! Winning feels good. But winning when you least expect it feels so much better. And so it was on a hot Sunday 9 February 2014 at Digman Reserve. Altona’s U17 team felt the weight of being defending premiers after the power side of 2013 delivered the goods. But with less than a handful of top-age players, most of the boys felt a couple wins and a good showing was probably the best they could hope for; especially after some recent indifferent performances on Saturday mornings. First-up; Gellibrand. They’d knocked us off in a T20 a month ago and so we were 50/50 at best going in to this one. But Altona bowling first, restricted them to just 136 with disciplined bowling and fielding on the Newport oval. The chase started with promise but from 0-40 in quick time, we dropped to 5-45. Recent batting collapse memories came flooding back but Toby Brooks, Nick Zavattiero, Jordan Hegarty and Mitch Cullen steadied to take us to victory. A heat delay reduced the next two games to 16 over matches. Finally, we started against Seabrook. With only 9 players, they were always going to struggle against us and we won this one comfortably. Good batting from Toby again (opening with Roache against his old side), Appleby, Will McConville, and McCracken produced an impossible target for an undermanned but brave Seabrook. Game 3 – Roachie did the maths and worked out that we could still make the final on run rate even if we lost. We didn’t need the maths this time though. Batting first, we put on our best performance yet. A score of 126 for only a handful of wickets was solid off the restricted 16 overs. The “Toby and Roachie T20 opening combo” worked well again. And Appleby and Mitch Grubb pushed us on to a good score. Our seam bowlers were too much for these Sunshine United boys – Mitch Cullen and Hegarty were accurate, Toby and Brett Smith were fast, and Daniel MacKenzie, who expected just to field for the day, was proving a real asset with his medium pacers and slower balls. So into the final against Sunshine we went. Undefeated. Didn’t expect that. A defeat in the final would definitely be seen as an honourable defence of the 2013 premiership. But the boys weren’t done. Again the coin was on our side and we batted. After 3 matches, eyes were in and we plundered a huge total of 196 for just 4 wickets. Appleby again was elegant and prolific. Grubb’s 50 was awesome and full of power, perfectly supported by Brett Smith who went on to pound the opposition further after Mitch’s mandatory retirement. So now we were 20 overs away from an unlikely title win. Surely 196 was impossible to chase down, even on this small ground. But Sunshine were not done. After 10 overs, they were just two down with 110 on the board and on track to win. Altona were struggling to get this innings under control. This time it was a change in pace with Nick Zav that got the break through, and then Hegarty who pressed us on, eventually finishing with a four-wicket haul. As dot balls mounted, it was clear we were climbing on top. But still our opponents would thump drives to deep mid off for Will McConville to field with strength, and slog to deep mid on where Kingie had to gallantly defend the boundary. With the final wicket, the boys surged to the centre wicket. It was a stunning win. For the club, it should forever be a day that proves improbable does not mean impossible. For the 12 young men who represented Altona CC that day, it was an achievement that they will no doubt never forget on that hot day in February 2014.

The Team (Back Row from left): Lachlan McCracken, Brett Smith, Jake King, Toby Brooks, Dylan Appleby, Mitchell Cullen, Will McConville, Danny Zavattiero (Coach) (Front row from left) Daniel MacKenzie, Nick Zavattiero, Mitchell Grubb, Jordan Roache, Jordan Hegarty

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

FRANK KIRK (1st XI Best & Fairest Award) Frank Kirk was instrumental in the formation of the Altona Cricket Club. Frank was involved with Alto- na Mercantile Mutual Cricket Club in the late 50’s and early 60’s and sought to recruit Ray Duckett to the club. Ray was a champion player at Newport ANA and had just moved into Altona. Together they pushed for Altona Mercantile and Altona ANA to join forces and become the Altona Cricket Club. Whilst Altona ANA initially rejected the merger offer the Altona Cricket Club was formed in the 1962 season. Altona ANA folded shortly after and its players then moved across to Altona Cricket Club. Ini- tially playing in the WAFDCA then the VJCAA and thanks to the tireless work of Frank Kirk now the VSDCA. Frank is the longest serving President in the club’s history. Frank was recognised for his hard work by not only having the ground named in his honour but also the first XI Best & Fairest Award. This award, voted by the umpires at the end of each game is award- ed to the best player in the first XI for the season.

JOE GRASBY (2nd XI Best & Fairest Award) Joe Grasby by all accounts was an excellent clubman. Captain of various elevens but mainly the 2nds, the 2nd XI best player medal was named after him in tribute for his many years of service to the club. Joe played 140 games for Altona in a career which started in 1974/75. This award is also voted on by the umpires at the end of each game.

RAY PATTON (Best Club Person Award)

One just needs to look at the club honour boards to realize why the best club person award has been named in Ray’s honour. A life member, Ray was a part of the cricket club committee for almost 30 years, serving as the club, secretary, president and treasurer for an amount of time that has and most likely will never be matched. Ray also played for the club playing 153 games scoring 1232 runs as a wicket keeper taking 93 catches and 8 stumpings. Ray continues his involvement in the club by being a driving force behind the club’s major fundraiser, the Friday night raffle at the bowling club.

WAYNE ’LUMPY’ PATTON (Club Champion Player Award)

The club champion trophy was renamed in honour of Wayne Patton after he passed away in the late 1980’s. An all-round Altona person Wayne served on the committee for many years and was a first XI wicket keeper. Wayne played 132 games in a career that began in 1974/75. He was tough competitor with a very strong char- acter. I remember Lumpy as our Team Manager in our premiership year of 1987/88 along with his assistant Stewy who had snapped his leg in the previous football season. Lumpy had the lower part of one of his legs amputated and we had both Lumpy and Stewy on the sidelines on crutches and together they formed our 12th man.

MICK JENKINS (1st XI Batting Award)

The first XI batting average award is named after a long standing supporter of the club. Mick Jenkins served on the club committee and happily invested time into the younger players. Mick enjoyed watching his son Paul play at the club and was always willing to help out the club whenever help was needed. Paul went on to be- come a champion player winning the Hatch Medal 1st XI Best & Fairest in the Sub District Competition, he Cap- tained Coached the club, was awarded Life Membership and was also a recipient of his fathers award 4 times.

GORDON MACFARLANE (1st XI Bowling Award)

The 1st XI bowling average was named after club legend Gordon Macfarlane who has been the winner of the bowling average a record 9 times. Gordon is the current club games, wickets and runs record holder and is the only player in Altona Cricket Club history to take 600 wickets. He was the first player to reach 6000 runs for the club. Gordon has won the prestigious Kirk Medal 9 times, is the winner of the Hatch Medal which is the1st XI Best & Fairest in the Victorian Sub District Competition (one of only two Altona players to have won this award), is a 1st XI Premiership Player and is also a Life Member of the club.

MONICA CLARKE (2nd XI Batting Award)

The Monica Clarke Memorial Shield is named after our first female life member and 2nd XI scorer for many years. Monica was a tireless worker who loved scoring for the seconds while watching “her boys”. Monica was the scorer for the 1st XI for many years and became the scorer for the seconds when the then first XI captain forgot to pick her up one week.

ALEC MERRILL (Most Promising Junior Award) The Alec Merrill award is named after former senior & junior coach Alec Merrill. Alec was the senior coach and U/16 coach in 1972/73 Season when the 1st XI, 2nd XI and U/16’s all won premierships in the then VJCA Compe- tition. He was appointed senior coach for a 2nd time in the 1987/88 season and yet again the 1st & 2nd XI’s won premierships this time in the Victorian Sub District Competition. He was very influential in fostering young tal- ent at the club, hence this award was created in his honour and is presented every year to a top age U/17 play- er. The award is $300 worth of coaching.

Altona Cricket Club Junior Section

Presidents Report:

I want to start by acknowledging the fantastic efforts of my fellow com- mittee members that contributed to another successful season for the ACC junior section. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of all the non-committee members who have contributed to our success through- out the season, all our coaches who freely give up their time and do a fabu- Darren McConville lous job in coaching our children, and all the parents who help out with our committee initiatives and the running of our teams on game day. I would like to thank Craig Duff for his Hatch efforts and his junior development work throughout the season. Thanks also to the senior com- mittee who continue to enable the junior committee to achieve the best results they can. The annual junior report highlights a club strong in numbers, 126 children from Milo to U17's and 89 of those are U13's or younger. Congratulations to our 13B Friday South side that won the flag, our U13A Saturday who reached a Grand Final and our 13B Saturday that made a semi final. It's always nice to have some success on the field, but the way our juniors represent our club, their families and most im- portantly themselves while playing cricket is one of their and our great achievements. I would also like to acknowledge the senior coaching panel initiatives, the junior development sessions that have proven a great success with the players and their families. These initiatives will pay hand- some dividends for the senior club in years to come.

Looking forward we still need new parents who are interested in joining the junior committee especial- ly from the younger age groups, new ideas are always welcome. Junior sponsorship remains one of our great challenges, aside from some great work from David Appleby, there is a lot of room to improve. We have to work with the Senior club to maintain and expand our training facilities, and should be a big focus as we continue to grow strongly.

In closing I would to congratulate all that contributed to a very successful year at the Altona Cricket Club Junior section and look forward to even more successful 2014-2015 season.

TOTAL 96

Total registered players represented an increase of 12% and one additional U13 team from the previous season. It was encouraging to see a number of ‘graduates’ from our Milo In2Cricket program register as U11 players or transition into playing U11 CUBS during the season.

Milo In2Cricket The junior section ran the Milo In2Cricket program on Sunday mornings during October through to De- cember. The sessions were well attended with 29 registered participants ranging from 4 years old through to 10 years old. This is an increase of 35% from the previous season. A presentation was held with all participants receiving a medallion and certificate. This continues to be the main pathway into the U11 Cubs or U11A teams and continued support in this program is important for the future of the club.

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

Junior Development Program During the off season, our senior coaching panel (Mark Mitchell, Mike Davenport, Jim Sheedy, Craig Duff) and a number of senior players kindly gave up their time to run a 5 week development program – aimed at U15 and U17 players transitioning onto playing senior cricket. It was an outstanding initiative with a lot of players improving significantly in a short space of time. A highlight was a visit, certificate presentation and speech from current Australian player Clint McKay.

Below is a short summary report of the program, as your child approaches this age and is passionate about their cricket, it is nice to know these initiatives are available at Altona Cricket Club where the sen- ior coaches and senior players are so supportive and encouraging of our younger players coming through the junior ranks.

Report – from senior coaching panel Aim The aim of our Junior Development program was to start and work & nurture our junior players coming through the club to senior level. By providing a pathway over a 5 week period we were hoping to build strong relationships with our kids & parents so that we in time can help make the transition to the senior part of our club an easier one. We also wanted to work with our junior coaches and show a clear vision of coaching across the club at all levels.

Monday night sessions The program ran over 5 weeks commencing on July 1st. We had approximately 25 kids turn up each night. The kids were fantastic and very eager to learn. We approached the sessions in a simple format: Educational - this was where we spoke to the kids and gave them basic information about what we were wanting to achieve on the night

65

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

 Skill session - we gave the kids the opportunity to practise the skill in a non competitive session

 Net session - kids then had the chance to put the skill into action

 We kept to the basics and really tried to re enforce simple cricket skills.

Batting skills These were controlled by Mark Mitchell. Mitch focused heavily on the front foot and the back foot de- fence. These skills were built on each week. Weeks 3,4 & 5 we focused on our mental approach to batting combined with technical skills learnt in the first two weeks . We instructed the kids to develop a set routine in starting their innings ie. playing straight ( within the v) only playing at balls they will score from, no shots behind the wicket or across the line of the ball, making bowlers bowl at us not chasing deliveries . After 3 minutes of net session they were then encouraged to play a wider range of shots. These drills were about getting the kids to start developing a routine to start their innings, Bowling skills These were controlled by Mike Davenport. Mikes main focus was trying to ensure we bowled towards the top of off stump. We talked about bowling consistently on the off side channel of the wicket so that we The second week we looked at different bowling grips to assist the ball swinging each way to differ- ent batsmen The third week focused on ensuring we always made a batsman play especially when he was new to the crease. Our fourth week was a culmination of all the above but also ensuring we got our action right with a high front arm to assist us with getting a bit more pace out of our action The final week put everything into practice and saw some good results. Spinners The spinners were provided basic tips. Generally making sure their action was delivered at the high point of the Ensuring their body was used to fully assist their action. Things like front foot pivoting and making sure their bowling arm continued through and followed the momentum Above all we encouraged flight and also keeping the ball well up rather than too short.

Fielding We introduced our guys to our baseball coach who worked with them whilst teaching them the correct throwing and fielding techniques. This was a great session for the kids. Ironing out their techniques early is important and our coach ( Combo ) is excellent with all levels but especially with the kids.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14

The wrap up Overall we were very happy with the skill levels that we saw. Kids actually listened and we noticed gen- eral improvements in a number of our kids. The level of excitement and intensity from everyone associated was very pleasing. Our aim this year across the club is to get as much 1 on 1 time into every player that we have. On quite a few occasions we probably had 13-14 quality people providing some form of coaching to our young players over the past 5 weeks. We were extremely pleased to have several senior players attend the training nights to help pass on valuable information. A special thank you to Jake Duff, Luke Wilson & Stefan Sidari who were always there early to ensure the boys did a warm up and got things ready to go. The final night also saw Clint McKay turn up and speak to everyone involved. He also signed the certifi- cates and gave the kids plenty of photo opportunities which was well received. One piece of advice that was well put forward was that it all moves very quickly from where the kids are now to playing for Australia.

Hatch Shield Players Week 5 also saw some Hatch Shield players come along from other clubs in the area. A great initiative by Craig Duff to get them involved. These boys were also given the opportunity to meet Clint McKay & have a photo taken so I'm sure it was memorable for them all. Two Saturday afternoons coaching clinic sessions were run with the younger junior kids for a 1 hour batting & bowling session. These sessions were well attended and appreciated by the players involved and their parents.

Summary All in all we feel it was a successful program and one we can continue to build on. Our junior develop- ment is important to the club overall. Not just in the short term but also the longer term. We need to provide a smooth easy transition from junior cricket to senior cricket and then hopefully premier cricket when the time is right. And last but not least we would like to thank both the junior & senior committees for their help & sup- port and also their investment in making this program a success. The support from both committees and also the parents has made this program very successful. Thanks again. Mark Mitchell Jim Sheedy Craig Duff Mike Davenport

Major Projects/events

New/expansion to training net facilities Additional training net facilities have been jointly identified as an important requirement for the fu- ture of both the senior and junior sections of the club. From preliminary discussions with the council, the majority of the funding for any new facilities would have to come from the state or federal gov- ernment as well as the cricket club; the local councils budget is spread thin across a large number of sporting facilities in the Hobson’s Bay area. The majority of the local council funding is currently allo- cated towards maintenance of existing facilities and justifying new or additional nets at Altona will be challenging.

The team was made up of a mixture of Altona, Point Cook, Seabrook & Roosters players. Zane Donazzon (c) William McConville Daniel Mackenzie Tommi Wesley Billy El Hawli Luke McGuinness Callum Hands Thomas Velevski Daniel Ketchley Andre Edwards Jonathan Alphonse Stephen Alphonse Chris Sotiropoulos 2013/14 Hatch Coach Craig Duff

This year's Champion Player AND winner of the Batting average was Zane Donazzon who had a great tournament with the bat compiling 175 runs @ 29.2, also taking 5 wickets and 1 catch. He was also a great on field leader and his season overall in all grades was fantastic. He finished 2nd in the West Group in runs and stood tall through a very hot 2 weeks of hard cricket, well done Zane.

Zane Donazzon Our bowling average went to Callum Hands from Seabrook who had a fantastic tournament taking 10 wickets at an average of 10 and capped it all off in the last game with a Hat Trick. He finished top 3 with an equal number of wickets in the West Group. A great effort from a first year player. Callum was ably assisted by Tommi Wesley who also took 8 wickets at 11, from a kid who has the possibility of playing 3 years of Hatch he showed a great sense of maturity. As a group it was a tough tournament and I hope the boys learned a lot from it. Every player contributed in some way and they worked hard as a team to fight out to the end. Daniel McKenzie contributed well with both bat & ball, Will McConville had a great economy rate and showed his potential as a spinner, Luke McGuiness showed what true grit is in an innings of 29 against Williamstown with an 87 run partnership in 40 degree heat. I would like to thank all of the parents who helped out but I'd especially like to thank Ian McKenzie for giving up his time to help out as Team Manager and to all who pitched in to make it run very smoothly. In finishing I would like to wish all the boys the best of luck in their future endeavours and hope they all achieve what they have set out to do.

Regards, Craig Duff

51st ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2013/14 ALTONA ALL ABILITIES CONTINUE TO SHINE

12 All Ability Cricket Teams from across Victoria ventured out to Casey Fields on the 23rd February to battle it out for the title of the best All Ability Cricket Team in the State. Our boys battled hard and performed admirably against some quality teams. In the end we just missed out on the Grand Final and had to settle for third place. Knowing that our best batsman did not turn up to this event proved this result was a great team effort from all players. The Victorian Viking All Ability Cricket Team is selected based on individual performances at this carnival. Con- gratulations to Joe Brizzi, Shaun Rayment and Jamie Ronaldson for their selection in the Victorian Vikings follow- ing their outstanding performances on the day. Our 10 over tonk side also performed with aplomb by going through the tournament undefeated. Unfortunately at this level finals are not contested. Our Team Manager, Lorraine Woodman, should feel extremely proud of the performances displayed by both the All Ability A side and the All Ability 10 over tonk team.

Thank you also to Hobsons Bay Community Financial Services (Bendigo Bank) for allowing us to borrow their mini bus for the day.
