History of the High Court Bar Association
History of the High Court Bar Association By SRI SATYENDRA NATH VARMA Advocate, High Court, Allahabad Looking back at the annals of the High Court Bar Association one is bound to be struck by the awe and veneration which its great and distinguished members inspired and, by their examples, continue to do so. It has been a glorious history of giants who were not content with being mere great and celebrated lawyers but who transcended far beyond into much nobler fields of human activities such as national struggle for deliverance from an alien government. I am not saying so, because the past is always said to appear more luminous from a distance, but because the contributions of some of the more distinguished members of our Bar have become matters of national history. It would be difficult to conceive any record of public life and of eminent publicmen, educationists and statesmen of the country without mentioning the names of Pt. Ajudhia Nath, Sir Sunder Lal, Pt. Mati Lal Nehru, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru, Dr. Satish Chandra Banerji, Dr. Sachchidanand Sinha, Sri Purshottam Das Tandon and last, but not the least, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who all belonged to the Bar of this Court. The above is only a list of those of our distinguished members of the Bar, whose activities were not confined to the field of law but who shone in other spheres of life, and, in their own ways, were instrumental in moulding the course of history of this nation and who are now no more with us. -

The delegation wished him happy and successful tenure in the Bank. Office-bearers recalled that the DG, who was CMD of a nationalized bank and also the Chairman of IBA, had vast experience of the problems of retirees in the banking sector. Reserve Bank had over 19,000 retirees, which number exceeded the total working staff of the Bank. Referring to the issue of updation of pension in the Bank we stated that it has been pending for long in spite of sincere follow-up by three successive Governors, including the present one, viz. Dr. Raghuram G. Rajan with the Finance Ministry. Our Association and also the Forum of R.B. Officers and Employees are vigorously pursuing the matter. Governor had informed the delegation of our Chennai unit on the recent occasion of the Governor's felicitation function that the Bank was engaged in getting a fair deal from the Government and the finality was expected shortly. DG was requested to ensure that the issue is settled without further delay as the entire retiree community of the Bank is anxiously waiting for updation of pension. DG, who appeared to be well acquainted with the issue, gave us patient hearing. -

K.L. Misra-Many Splendoured Man Sri S.S. Ray, Senior Advocate No
K.L. Misra-Many Splendoured Man Sri S.S. Ray, Senior Advocate No account of the history of the Allahabad High Court can ever be complete without an honourable and detailed reference to Pandit Kanhaiya Lal Misra and the multifaceted and many splendoured trail that he has left behind not only in the field of Law but in almost every other sphere of noble human activity. To write about him is to write about Greatness. To discuss him is to discuss Intellectual Brilliance. To think of him is to think of Modesty, Simplicity and Lucidity. To remember him is to remember Nationalism at its finest hour. He was not one of those who merely achieved greatness nor certainly one of those upon whom greatness was thrust-he was in fact born great. His undoubted genius manifested itself from his very early years in School, College and the University. First in the Matriculation Examination, First in the Allahabad University Intermediate Examination, First in the Benaras Hindu University Economics Honours Examination, First in the L.L.B. Examination of the same University, all this marked him as the rising star in the firmament of Pre-Independent India's intellectual thought. Not many before him and hardly any after him could have secured 91 % in English in his Graduate Examination and none, I am sure, 150 out of 150 in his English Essay Paper in the Indian Civil Service Examination in which he appeared and passed in 1926, but, like a handful of our Great Patriots immersed in the spirit of Nationalism, he was not selected deliberately, although others securing positions below Kanhaiya Lal were.
