Abstract: Schistosomiasis is a common neglected tropical disease of impoverished people and livestock in many developing countries in tropical Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. Substantial progress has been made in controlling schistosomiasis in some African countries, but the disease still prevails in most parts of sub-Saharan Africa with an estimated 800 million people at risk of infection. Current control strategies rely primarily on treatment with praziquantel, as no vaccine is available; however, treatment alone does not prevent reinfection. There has been emphasis on the use of integrated approaches in the control and elimination of the disease in recent years with the development of health infrastructure and health education. However, there is a need to evaluate the present status of African schistosomiasis, primarily caused by Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, and the factors affecting the disease as the basis for developing more effective control and elimination strategies in the future. This review provides an historical perspective of schistosomiasis in Africa and discusses the current status of control efforts in those countries where the disease is endemic. Every year PZQ is do- nated to endemic countries in Africa to treat millions of school-aged children (SAC) [16,17]. Treatment compliance is challenging, especially among individuals in low socioeconomic areas due to fear of adverse effects, apparent absence of disease symptoms, and even when symptoms occur, they are often met with stigmatisation [18,19] or seen as a normal sign of puberty [20,21] not requiring treatment. There have been increased efforts aimed at eliminating schistosomiasis in the past decade with the World Health Organization (WHO) setting 2030 as the goal for transmission interruption in endemic African countries [22]. Government agencies from many countries have prioritised the control of NTDs by ex- ploiting breakpoints in their lifecycles, such as the implementation of snail control and through improvements in sanitation and access to safe, clean water [23,24]. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, PC is still the major intervention practiced. As PZQ is ineffective against migrating schistosomula, if these larvae are present in an individual, treatment may not prevent their maturation to adults and resultant patency. Rapid re-infection following treatment with PZQ is also common [25–27]. SAC are the main targets for control as they are considered to be at the highest risk of infection, being more likely to participate in daily activities including fishing, rice farming and swimming, that put them at greater risk of infection compared with other age groups. Protective immune responses against schistosomes develop slowly, with children from schistosomiasis-endemic areas being generally susceptible to reinfection after treatment for schistosome infection, whereas adults are usually protected [10]. This observation can explain the characteristic age-prevalence and age-intensity curves observed in schistosomiasis-endemic areas in Africa [11,28,29]. 2. Pathogenesis 2.1. Life Cycle of Schistosoma sp. Schistosomes have a complex life cycle involving both intermediate gastropod hosts and a definitive mammalian host (Figure1). Unlike other trematode species, Schistosoma spp. are dioecious (separate male and female worms) which undergo sexual reproduction in the mammalian definitive host. Schistosome eggs are produced and excreted into the environement via the faeces (S. mansoni) or urine (S. haematobium). Miracidia are released Trop. Med. Infect.     Glossary Glossary Albedo A measure of an object’s reflectivity. A pure white reflecting surface has an albedo of 1.0 (100%). A pitch-black, nonreflecting surface has an albedo of 0.0. The Moon is a fairly dark object with a combined albedo of 0.07 (reflecting 7% of the sunlight that falls upon it). The albedo range of the lunar maria is between 0.05 and 0.08. The brighter highlands have an albedo range from 0.09 to 0.15. Anorthosite Rocks rich in the mineral feldspar, making up much of the Moon’s bright highland regions. Aperture The diameter of a telescope’s objective lens or primary mirror. Apogee The point in the Moon’s orbit where it is furthest from the Earth. At apogee, the Moon can reach a maximum distance of 406,700 km from the Earth. Apollo The manned lunar program of the United States. Between July 1969 and December 1972, six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, allowing a total of 12 astronauts to explore its surface. Asteroid A minor planet. A large solid body of rock in orbit around the Sun. Banded crater A crater that displays dusky linear tracts on its inner walls and/or floor. 250 Basalt A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, low in silicon, with a low viscosity. Basaltic material fills many of the Moon’s major basins, especially on the near side. Glossary Basin A very large circular impact structure (usually comprising multiple concentric rings) that usually displays some degree of flooding with lava. The largest and most conspicuous lava- flooded basins on the Moon are found on the near side, and most are filled to their outer edges with mare basalts.

Darby Dyar, Astronomy Approved By: Christopher Condit, Geology CE Type: Departmental Honors Project Using a gridded version of maritan topography with the computer program Gridview, this project studied the depth-diameter relationship of martian impact craters. The work encompasses 361 profiles of impacts with diameters larger than 15 kilometers and is a continuation of work that was started at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Walter S. Keifer. Using the most ‘pristine,’ or deepest craters in the data a depth-diameter relationship was determined: d = 0.610D 0.327 , where d is the depth of the crater and D is the diameter of the crater, both in kilometers. This relationship can then be used to estimate the theoretical depth of any impact radius, and therefore can be used to estimate the pristine shape of the crater. With a depth-diameter ratio for a particular crater, the measured depth can then be compared to this theoretical value and an estimate of the amount of material within the crater, or fill, can then be calculated. The data includes 140 named impact craters, 3 basins, and 218 other impacts. The named data encompasses all named impact structures of greater than 100 kilometers in diameter.

  • Evidence for Impact-Generated Deposition
    EVIDENCE FOR IMPACT-GENERATED DEPOSITION ON THE LATE EOCENE SHORES OF GEORGIA by ROBERT SCOTT HARRIS (Under the direction of Michael F. Roden) ABSTRACT Modeling demonstrates that the Late Eocene Chesapeake Bay impact would have been capable of depositing ejecta in east-central Georgia with thicknesses exceeding thirty centimeters. A coarse sand layer at the base of the Upper Eocene Dry Branch Formation was examined for shocked minerals. Universal stage measurements demonstrate that planar fabrics in some fine to medium sand-size quartz grains are parallel to planes commonly exploited by planar deformation features (PDF’s) in shocked quartz. Possible PDF’s are observed parallel to {10-13}, {10-11}, {10-12}, {11-22} and {51-61}. Petrographic identification of shocked quartz is supported by line broadening in X-ray diffraction experiments. Other impact ejecta recognized include possible ballen quartz, maskelynite, and reidite-bearing zircon grains. The layer is correlative with an unusual diamictite that contains goethite spherules similar to altered microkrystites. It may represent an impact-generated debris flow. These discoveries suggest that the Chesapeake Bay impact horizon is preserved in Georgia. The horizon also should be the source stratum for Georgia tektites. Tanner,9 &C.Lengeler10 The distribution of schistosomiasis is focal, so if the resources available for control are to be used most effectively, they need to be directed towards the individuals and/or communities at highest risk of morbidity from schistosomiasis. Rapid and inexpensive ways of doing this are needed, such as simple school questionnaires. The present study used such questionnaires in an area of western Coà te d'Ivoire where Schistosoma mansoni is endemic; correctly completed questionnaires were returned from 121 out of 134 schools (90.3%), with 12 227 children interviewed individually. The presence of S. mansoni was verified by microscopic examination in 60 randomly selected schools, where 5047 schoolchildren provided two consecutive stool samples for Kato±Katz thick smears. For all samples it was found that 54.4% of individuals were infected with S. mansoni. Moreover, individuals infected with S. mansoni reported ``bloody diarrhoea'', ``blood in stools'' and ``schistosomiasis'' significantly more often than uninfected children. At the school level, Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that the prevalence of S. mansoni significantly correlated with the prevalence of reported bloody diarrhoea (P = 0.002), reported blood in stools (P = 0.014) and reported schistosomiasis (P = 0.011). Reported bloody diarrhoea and reported blood in stools had the best diagnostic performance (sensitivity: 88.2%, specificity: 57.7%, positive predictive value: 73.2%, negative predictive value: 78.9%).
