Past Grand Monarch Dave Rebmann, his Lady Liz, Dick Faust, Jim Bainter, and the Prophets and Ladies of Abbas Grotto need to be congratulated! Our theme for this year is “Dance thru Life with the Grotto.” Dancing does not mean that you are Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers; it can be that you are the helpful facilitator who shows the way to peaceful resolutions of problems that come your way. When you dance through life, you smooth the way for yourself and others. In order to keep Grotto alive we MUST start paying more attention to bringing in new members. Membership is the key to our future. Speaking of keys, if a Prophet is a top line signer for three or four new Prophets, he will get a Gold Key; five or six new Prophets a Ruby Key; and, seven or more, a Diamond Key. These keys can be worn on your fez. Our membership year is from May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014. Therefore, some of us are going to have to get really busy as our membership year is almost half over! Grand Monarch Otto Thiergart and his Lady Lois The Grotto charity is The Humanitarian Foundation. It is my intention to continue the Grand Monarch’s “Five for Five” Enchanted Lantern Program. Lady Lois’ goal is to raise $4,000.00 or more for Humanitarian Foundation to benefit Children with Special Needs. Pins are only $10 each! Lois says Otto’s theme of dancing through life is not about being Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers; it’s about smoothing the way for others. Every time you show a kindness or do something special to make it easier for one person or many people, you are “Dancing thru Life.” So let’s all work together and “Dance thru Life with the Grotto.” Let’s all support our Grand Monarch’s Lady Lois on her project when she visits your Grotto or Grotto Association! 4 The Grotto Magazine ProPHET REX ALLEN THE LAST OF HOLLYWOOd’S SINGING COWBoys MICHAEL G. WAHL, PGM, 33° GRAND HIstorIAN Records, which released his biggest hit, 1953’s “Crying in the Chapel”; the song peaked in the Top Five and reached the Top Ten pop charts. In the latter half of the decade, he made a number of albums composed of Western songs. During this time, he acted in 39 episodes of the television program Frontier Doctor. By the ‘60s, Rex Allen had re-signed with Mercury Records, which led to several minor hits and one major success — 1962’s “Don’t Go Near the Indians,” which returned the singer to the country Top Ten and the pop Top 20. During this time and the early ‘70s, he recorded albums for Disneyland, Buena Vista, and JMI. However, he was more prominent in this era as a narrator for many Walt Disney films and television programs, as well as a voice in several Disney cartoons. Better-known as the Arizona Cowboy, Rex Allen was the last of Hollywood’s singing cowboys. Between 1950 and Rex Allen was a Mason! When they learned he would be 1954, Allen starred in 19 movies for Republic studios.

    The Singing Cowboy In American Culture by Douglas B. Green f all the facets of American life, one of the few universal experiences which cuts across boundaries of age, social status, race, or location is that of sitting in a hushed theater, accompanying the crack of liix-guns with the O rhythmic chewing of stale popcorn, staring wide-eyed at some handsome cowpuncher either roughing up 'a scurrilous scoundrel or two or leaping from a thundering stallion on to a fastmoving freight or rampaging stagecoach. Ifthat rich and redolent experience was somehow missed, surely no one has not been at least aware of the heroics of Matt Dillon on "Gunsmoke" or the Cart­ wrights of "Bonanza," two longtime staples of television. Perhaps no occupation has been more glamorized over the years than that of cowboy, rancher, frontiersman, prospector, or prairie lawman. It is a national legend and legacy, part of us all. It is a delightful myth we know to be a myth, one which our grandfathers helped create, one which we continue to preserve. Yet positive sentiments toward the halcyon years of the western film in the motion picture industry seem today to be scarce: western film historians look upon the whole genre of singing cowboys as an unhappy and unfortunate bastardization which diluted the purity of the classic action western, while music historians, in general, tend to look upon the genre with equal horror as a bastardization which not only diluted the purity of old time country music, but which also bathed it in such gaudy commercialism that it stripped the music of its inherent dignity.

    RICHARD SCHAUS COLLECTION – FM MSS 6 Processed and Compiled by Dorothy M. Webb, 1983 Provenance: Donated to the Arizona Historical Society in 2012 by the Arizona Historical Foundation. Richard George Schaus was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on January 11, 1910. He died in Phoenix, Arizona, April 14, 1981.His first introduction to the West was with a Glider training program in Deming, New Mexico. He became a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, Burma Theater, World War II. A year’s course in photography at Columbia University followed the war. Schaus then came to Phoenix and opened a photo shop with a man named Bob Allen. Abbie Keith, Editor of the Arizona Cattlelog monthly magazine of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association, hired Schaus to take pictures for the magazine. In a short time, he was writing stories to go with the pictures and working full time for the Association. His earliest articles, during 1950 and 1951, were about living cowboys (“Cowboy Corner”) and Quarter Horses, special features in each issue of the magazine. Soon, Schaus was photographing and writing about ranch people and ranches throughout the state of Arizona. During the l950’s, he also had several articles published in Arizona Highways, the subjects being cattle and related topics. The back cover of each Arizona Cattlelog carried a Valley National Bank ad with a biography of an Arizona ranchman or woman. Roscoe Wilson wrote the biographies for many years. In 1957, Schaus took over that job. In December1962 Schaus became Editor of the Arizona Cattlelog and remained so until he retired in June, 1975.
