Keeping up with the filing? Well, move carefully in the office because it’s more of a “piling” system. Cooking more and eating out less? Yeah, right, that happened for a week. So now it’s time for 2016 resolutions. I have just one: take time to smell the roses. When you reach a certain age, time goes by quickly and leaves you in a daze. So I am resolving to do away with those things that hold me in their clutches for hours. Specifically, this means Facebook. I have spent so much time this past year looking at other people’s sunrises and The Hanson Family light up the Convention.

  • Dear Friends, in Keeping with the Nostalgic Themes with Which We
Dear friends, In keeping with the nostalgic themes with which we normally open these Activity Pages, I thought I’d tell you a story about young love – its excitement, its promise, and its almost inevitable woes. It’s a true story, one from my own past. And it begins at Roller City, a roller skating rink located, in those distant days, on Alameda Avenue just west of Federal Boulevard in Denver, Colorado. It was a balmy Friday night when I first spied my Cinderella – a lovely, lithe thing with a cute smile, pink ribbons in her blonde hair, and very “girly” bons bons of matching color hanging on the front of her white roller skates. It might have been love at first sight but certainly by the time we skated hand in hand under the multi-colored lights in a romantic “couples skate,” I was a goner. Indeed, I fell more madly in love than I had at any other time in my whole life. I was 10 years old. I drop in that fact because it proved to be the relevant point in the impending tragedy of unrequited love. For you see, it turned out there was an unbridgeable gap in our ages. I was just getting ready to go into the 4th grade whereas I learned she was going into the 5th grade! Yipes! I had fallen for an older woman! How could I break it to her? And how would I deal with the rejection I knew must follow? I was in a terrible jam and so…and I’m not proud of it…I made up a lie.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real.
