Museums Established in Synagogues in Communist Poland: The Cases of Ła ´ncutand Włodawa Kinga Migalska Prints and Drawings Cabinet, National Museum in Kraków, 3 May Street, 30-062 Kraków, Poland; [email protected] Received: 9 November 2019; Accepted: 12 December 2019; Published: 17 December 2019 Abstract: World War II and the subsequent period of communist rule severely diminished the amount of historic Jewish architecture in Poland. It is estimated that in the mid-1990s there were about 321 synagogues and prayer houses in the country, all in various states of preservation. This article examines two case studies of synagogues that were salvaged by being transformed into Judaica museums. The first of these is the synagogue in Ła´ncutand the second concerns the complex of two synagogues and one prayer house in Włodawa. The article contains an analysis of both examples from the perspective of the following factors: the circumstances under which the institution was established, the place that the history and culture of Jews took in the Museum’s activity, the way that Judaica collections and exhibitions were constructed, the substantive, educational, and research activities that were undertaken, as well as the issue of what place these monuments occupy in the town’s landscape. DOI: 10.4467/2353737XCT.16.181.5792 BEATA MALINOWSKA-PETELENZ* TEMPLES OF EUROPE AND THEIR CULTURAL CONTEXTS ŚWIĄTYNIE EUROPY I ICH KULTUROWE KONTEKSTY Abstract European cathedrals and churches are not only a testament to faith but are also masterpieces of architecture and generators of the highest order of intellectual, emotional and aesthetic values. They are also important components of cultural contexts. The image of a temple often plays a part in the cultural space of a city – apart from the commonly understood religious function – it creates cities, it is a part of national memory, it strengthens social identity, in addition to fulfilling an aesthetic and marketing function. By remaining bound to each other, temples are a part of the multi-layered heritage of past generations. Sosnowskiego 11, 15-893 Bialystok, Poland; [email protected] (B.C.); [email protected] (M.C.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Modernist planners were given the opportunity to apply the idea of the Modern Movement in the implementation of cities transforming after World War II, which was not possible before in long-term evolving structures. Usually, however, it was impossible to change everything: some urban and even architectural elements were necessary to be preserved. As a result, the elements of the ancient landscapes of these cities - historical objects and spaces - necessary for the continuity of evidence of history and identity have been preserved, sometimes through reconstruction. Finally, in some of these cities, both old and new elements contribute to the contemporary urban landscape. The aim of the research is to examine two key categories of urban structure in this perspective: 1. landmarks 2. urban network nodes. For this purpose: 1. the changes in the number and rank of the space with which the landmarks exhibition was carried out were compared; 2. the changes in the rank of nodes in the urban structure functioning both in the pre-war and in the present structure, as well as changes in their distribution and concentration areas were analyzed. -

Andrzej Wyrobisz POLISH RESEARCHES ON THE HISTORY OF BUILDING TILL THE END OF THE 18th CENTURY I The history of building as a branch of the industrial activity of man did not at all interest Polish historians for a long time. A history of building has had to be a collective work of sciences and for many reasons it was difficult to attain such co-operation in the 19th and early in the 20th century; in addition, the historians’ demands in this respect only rarely met with response of representatives of other branches of learning. Moreover, the traditional view that the history of building was the domain of the historians of art and architecture (who, for their part, were interested only in its certain aspects) hampered the development of studies in that field; all problems of economy and technology were particularly neglected. However, technical progress was accompanied by a growing world interest in the history of technology and organization of work (including the technology and organization of work in building), and the development of historical studies required a widened scope of the subjects of study, far beyond the traditional limits, a classic set of sources, and new scientific methods. In the 20th century it was impossible to ignore the history of building any longer, and it was necessary to search for the ways to overcome all the obstacles that obstructed the develop ment of studies in that field. The initiative by no means originated from the historians who turned out to be very conservative. On this occasion we should mention the services of Professor Oskar Sosnowski (1880—1939), an expert in architecture and founder of the Polish Architecture Institute at Warsaw Polytechnic, who was not only keenly interested in the history of building and encouraged many of his pupils and colleagues to take up this line of study, but also (what is the most important) initiated regular co-operation of architecture and art historians, pure historians and archaeologists. -

GLOSSARY OF TRADITION AND AVANT-GARDE ISSUES IN THE INTER-WAR PERIOD Streszczenie W niniejszym artykule, autorki podjęły się próby prześledzenia rozwoju architektury nowoczesnej w Rydze na przestrzeni lat od 1918 do 1940. Fundamentem rozważań jest zbieg, powstania i rozkwitu niepodległej Republiki Łotewskiej i rozwinięcie się ruchu nowoczesnego w architekturze tego kraju. Ruch ten był zara- zem kontynuacją modernizmu łotewskiego przed 1914 rokiem, a jednocześnie wykazywał ambicje dorów- nania do osiągnięć reprezentowanych przez najwybitniejsze nurty architektury zachodnioeuropejskiej. Przeto w budownictwie stolicy Republiki zamanifestowały się trzy wiodące w architekturze międzywojennej, centralnej Europy zwłaszcza, tendencje rozwojowe. Są to tradycjonalizm i neoklasycyzm oraz umiarkowana awangarda. Nie bez znaczenia dla twórczości ryskich architektów było przywiązanie do wartości wernakularnych, a także, co może najważniejsze, poszanowanie zabytkowego kontekstu średniowiecznej jeszcze tkanki historycznej, co dało w rezultacie, godne pozazdroszczenia, znakomite rezultaty.
