I can honestly say, though, that I would not have made it to this Ph.D. program if it were not for two people in particular. The first is George Farris, the trustee for the Dorothy Hassenflue Stein Scholarship who gave me a chance to go to college at the University of Akron. After graduating from high school I did not think that I was smart enough to go to college, so I am eternally grateful that he gave me the opportunity to prove myself wrong. The second person was my undergraduate mentor and M.A. advisor at the University of Akron, TJ Boisseau. She helped me get into a graduate program, spent endless hours helping me to become a better writer, and most importantly answered questions I did not even know to ask as a first-generation college student. At UCSD I have also received guidance and inspiration from numerous faculty members. My advisor, Rebecca Jo Plant, has been extremely supportive since I entered the Ph.D. program. I am grateful for all the thoughtful comments and critical feedback on my written work. But most of all, her encouragement over the last seven years has helped me see this project through to the end. In addition to the support she provided me when I was in San Diego, I am extremely grateful that she took the time to “meet” with me over the phone multiple times after I moved to Colorado. Graduate school can be isolating, but it’s even more so when you move away from your community during the last year of a Ph.D. program. At UCSD, I have also had the pleasure to work with Luis Alvarez. As a committee member, he provided me with guidance on my research and professional ix development, and his insightful questions throughout the years have pushed me to think about my project differently. I have also learned a great deal about teaching from watching him and I try to put this into practice when I teach my own classes. My meetings with Danny Widener at the Art of Espresso coffee cart were a great source of inspiration. His guidance, kindness, and advice on navigating the job market and life in general has been invaluable. I am also grateful for the overwhelming support I have received from David Serlin. He met with me regularly over the past few years, and his enthusiasm for my project has always been so reassuring—I always felt excited and motivated to forge ahead with this dissertation after we had a conversation. I would also like to thank Dayo Gore for her comments on my prospectus, which helped me to think about the possibilities of this dissertation leading into the research phase of this process. A cultural audit is a method of gaining a deeper understanding of priority audiences by understanding the pop culture narratives they consume. The project has two overarching goals. The first is to provide evidence-based insights to the foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity grantee cohort, a group of organizations who are designing new narratives of poverty to correct misconceptions and address systemic barriers to mobility. The second is to establish a baseline of existing narratives for longitudinal tracking by Harmony Labs, another foundation grantee. The formative research summarized in this report examines how poverty and wealth are constructed in the pop culture narratives in which media consumers are immersed — specifically scripted TV and film, popular music, and top-selling video games.1 In later stages, the Lear Center will expand this analysis to TV news and unscripted content.

Biography/Administrative History Hal Kanter was a prolific comedy writer whose career spanned six decades of radio, films television comedies and awards shows. Born in Savannah, Georgia on December 18, 1918, his family moved to Long Island when he was a child. His father, Albert, created Classics Illustrated, comic-book versions of classic books. From a young age, Kanter was interested in theater and creating cartoons and writing jokes. He sold his first cartoon in 1933 and for the following five years was a free-lance cartoonist for newspapers and magazines.

    113 115 The Tragicomic Televisual Ghetto: Popular Representations of Race and Space at Chicago’s Cabrini-Green by Joseph Godlewski Abstract The production of cultural perceptions in mass media is linked to the project of urban renewal and institutionalized racism. Popular television shows like Good Times, so infused with progressive ideals and issues of social relevance, were able to convey a normative view of “the projects” as an inherently failed space. This article presents a history of cultural translation and racial relations against a backdrop of American housing policy in the post-war era. The 1970s television show, Good Times, which earned the status as one of the fi rst “black sitcoms,” told the story of a morally strong family enduring life in “the projects” of Chicago. Experiencing a kind of racialized modernity, social mobility for the Evans family was continually fraught and “progress” was agonizingly and circularly deferred in weekly half- hour segments. In their perpetual struggle, the show’s characters can be seen as engaged with what Cornel West has called the “ignoble paradox of modernity.”1 (West 1999, 53) It’s serious themes, though, were punctuated by witty lines and the enigmatic catchphrase “Dyn-o-mite!” emphatically uttered by the family’s eldest son and star of the show, J.J. Evans. Provocatively, the setting of this comedy was the Chicago Housing Authority’s now infamous low-income housing project, Cabrini-Green. Though not overtly stated on the show, an analysis of its opening and closing sequences as well as its set design unmistakably demonstrate its very particular architectural setting within a produced televisual geography.
