Identity Evropa
AGAINST IDENTITY EVROPA AGAINST THE ALT RIGHT Big Nazi On Campus May 15, 2016 ON FRIDAY, May 6th, white nationalist Richard Spencer, President and director of National Policy Institute (NPI), (a think tank aimed at mil- lennials and educated adults that puts on conferences), and head of its publishing arm Washington Summit Publishers, arrived just before 3pm at UC Berkeley. Encircled by three other white nationalists, Spen- cer walked from the street through several corridors and hallways until finally making his way to Sproul Plaza where a group of other supporters had already gathered and started to live-stream and hold signs. In doing so, Spencer was stepping out of the world of paid con- ferences and weekly podcasts and into the terrain of street activism. Having announced the event on his twitter 48 hours before hand and working with Red Ice Radio, a live-streaming and in home studio run by a white nationalist married couple, the National Policy Institute along with Identity Europa, the youth wing of the American Freedom Party, (a key organizer for ANP is David Duke’s former right-hand man, Jamie Kelso), a Neo-Nazi formation, was working to create a “virtual rally.” The event itself was billed as a “Safe Space” to talk about race in America, using language common among left-wing, ac- tivist, and anarchist spaces. Before the rally even began, Spencer’s fellow white nationalists at Red Ice were already playing up what they imagined was going to happen that day. “Here is is, the birth of the free speech movement, and all of these liberals aren’t going to be able to stand white people talking about race,” they stated, (as if somehow Further resources Berkeley was devoid of white people doing just that). -
The Dark Enlightenment
The Dark Enlightenment Nick Land Part 1: Neo-reactionaries head for the exit March 2, 2012 Enlightenment is not only a state, but an event, and a process. As the designation for an historical episode, concentrated in northern Europe during the 18th century, it is a leading candidate for the ‘true name’ of modernity, capturing its origin and essence (‘Renaissance’ and ‘Industrial Revolution’ are others). Between ‘enlightenment’ and ‘progressive enlightenment’ there is only an elusive difference, because illumination takes time – and feeds on itself, because enlightenment is self-confirming, its revelations ‘self-evident’, and because a retrograde, or reactionary, ‘dark enlightenment’ amounts almost to intrinsic contradiction. To become enlightened, in this historical sense, is to recognize, and then to pursue, a guiding light. There were ages of darkness, and then enlightenment came. Clearly, advance has demonstrated itself, offering not only improvement, but also a model. Furthermore, unlike a renaissance, there is no need for an enlightenment to recall what was lost, or to emphasize the attractions of return. The elementary acknowledgement of enlightenment is already Whig history in miniature. Once certain enlightened truths have been found self-evident, there can be no turning back, and conservatism is pre-emptively condemned – predestined — to paradox. F. A. Hayek, who refused to describe himself as a conservative, famously settled instead upon the term ‘Old Whig’, which – like ‘classical liberal’ (or the still more melancholy ‘remnant’) – accepts that progress isn’t what it used to be. What could an Old Whig be, if not a reactionary progressive? And what on earth is that? Of course, plenty of people already think they know what reactionary modernism looks like, and amidst the current collapse back into the 1930s their concerns are only likely to grow. -

Imagination Movers: the Construction of Conservative Counter-Narratives in Reaction to Consensus Liberalism
Imagination Movers: The Construction of Conservative Counter-Narratives in Reaction to Consensus Liberalism Seth James Bartee Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought Francois Debrix, Chair Matthew Gabriele Matthew Dallek James Garrison Timothy Luke February 19, 2014 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: conservatism, imagination, historicism, intellectual history counter-narrative, populism, traditionalism, paleo-conservatism Imagination Movers: The Construction of Conservative Counter-Narratives in Reaction to Consensus Liberalism Seth James Bartee ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore what exactly bound post-Second World War American conservatives together. Since modern conservatism’s recent birth in the United States in the last half century or more, many historians have claimed that both anti-communism and capitalism kept conservatives working in cooperation. My contention was that the intellectual founder of postwar conservatism, Russell Kirk, made imagination, and not anti-communism or capitalism, the thrust behind that movement in his seminal work The Conservative Mind. In The Conservative Mind, published in 1953, Russell Kirk created a conservative genealogy that began with English parliamentarian Edmund Burke. Using Burke and his dislike for the modern revolutionary spirit, Kirk uncovered a supposedly conservative seed that began in late eighteenth-century England, and traced it through various interlocutors into the United States that culminated in the writings of American expatriate poet T.S. Eliot. What Kirk really did was to create a counter-narrative to the American liberal tradition that usually began with the French Revolution and revolutionary figures such as English-American revolutionary Thomas Paine. -

(Ph.D., Communication) Everyday (Anti)-Racism: Rhetorical Formations of White Racial Consciousness in Contemporary Public Discourse Dissertation directed by Associate Professor Lisa A. Flores ABSTRACT This critical rhetorical analysis interrogates contemporary public discourse on race and racism in a post-2012 U.S. American context characterized by proliferating consciousness and the waning hegemony of a colorblind racial ideology. Focusing on three overarching formations of whiteness—white nationalism, alt-right, and anti-racist whiteness—I investigate how efforts to raise white racial consciousness are rhetorically constructed and mobilized to hail an audience of everyday white U.S. Americans. Positioning themselves in opposition to a colorblind racial ideology and alternative orientations -
“Alt-Right” As a Rhetorical Bridge Between White Nationalism and Mainstream Public Discourse
Journal of Contemporary Rhetoric, Vol. 8, No.1/2, 2018, pp. 6-25. Alt-White: Conceptualizing the “Alt-Right” as a Rhetorical Bridge between White Nationalism and Mainstream Public Discourse Stephanie L. Hartzell Contemporary scholarship on race from critical rhetorical perspectives has revealed the dominance of a colorblind racial ideology and its accompanying norms of race-evasive discourse in the post-1960’s United States. In the “Age of Trumpism,” however, there has been a marked resurgence of explicitly pro-white rhetoric and a rise in public displays of various formations of white supremacy, including the emergence of a loose group of disgruntled pro-white, far-right reactionaries who have strategically adopted the label of “alt-right.” To help make sense of articulations among “alt-right,” far-right, and pro-white ideologies in the Trump-era, this essay investigates the emergence and early evolution of the “alt-right” to reveal how appeals to intellectualism and political correctness have been deployed to make space for overtly pro-white rhetoric in mainstream U.S. American public discourse. Along the way, I reveal (dis)connections among contemporary formations of pro-white ideologies to illuminate strategic constructions of rhe- torical distance between these formations and white supremacy. Ultimately, I argue that “alt-right” rhetoric is posi- tioned as a rhetorical bridge between white nationalism and mainstream public discourse. THE PURSUIT of the RIEMANN HYPOTHESIS John Derbyshire
THE PURSUIT OF THE RIEMANN HYPOTHESIS John Derbyshire, Prime Obsession: Bernhard Riemann and the Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics. Washington, D.C.: Joseph Henry Press, 2003, Pp. xvi + 422. GBP19.95 HB. By Mark Colyvan With Fermat’s Last Theorem finally disposed of by Andrew Wiles in 1994, it’s only natural that popular attention should turn to arguably the most outstanding unsolved problem in mathematics: the Riemann Hypothesis. Unlike Fermat’s Last Theorem, however, the Riemann Hypothesis requires quite a bit of mathematical background to even understand what it says. And of course both require a great deal of background in order to understand their significance. The Riemann Hypothesis was first articulated by Bernhard Riemann in an address to the Berlin Academy in 1859. The address was called “On the Number of Prime Numbers Less Than a Given Quantity” and among the many interesting results and methods contained in that paper was Riemann’s famous hypothesis: all non-trivial zeros of the zeta function, P∞ −s ζ(s) = n=1 n , have real part 1/2. Although the zeta function as stated and considered as a real-valued function is defined only for s > 1, it can be suitably extended. It can, as a matter of fact, be extended to have as its domain all the complex numbers√ (numbers of the form x+yi, where x and y are real numbers and i = −1) with the exception of 1 + 0i (at which point the zeta function is undefined). This extended zeta function takes the value zero for infinitely many complex numbers. -
The Rise of the Alt-Right
6 The Alt- Right on the Foundational Principles of American Politics One purpose of this chapter is to determine whether Alt- Right thought represents a radical break with American political principles. The issue is important, but not because radical breaks are necessarily bad while fidel- ity is necessarily good, or vice versa. The real question is what is being broken with or adhered to. American political principles are a variation on the philosophy of liberal democracy. A fundamental break with liberal de- mocracy is a matter of deep concern not because fundamental breaks are bad but because liberal democracy has served the country and the world well and the alternatives to it are very unappealing. Another concern is how one breaks with or adheres to the principles of liberal democracy, or any political philosophy. Breaking with liberal democracy can contribute usefully to political discourse if the overall quality of thought behind the critique is strong; unintelligent advocacy is not helpful. How, then, by these standards, does the Alt- Right critique of American foundational po- litical principles measure up? Before we take up that question a potential misunderstanding must be addressed. This chapter presents a good deal of material to show that the Alt-Right’s racialist and inegalitarian account of American foundational 123 Main_Rise of the Alt-Right_i-x_1-291_2p.indd 123 5/14/18 1:54 PM 124 THE RISE OF THE ALT- RIGHT principles is grossly incorrect. The point, however, is not that American political principles, and still less American political practice, are entirely free of racism and provided, from day one, a perfectly satisfactory vision of the liberal democratic ideal. -

Kill All Normies: Online Culture Wars from 4Chan and Tumblr to Trump
What people are saying about Kill All Normies Amidst the chaos of our times, it is a relief to have a brilliant and fearless critic like Angela Nagle to turn to. Unwilling to stomach the liberal shibboleths that fail to adequately explain the emergence and significance of right-wing subculture, she’s the only one willing to descend into the grimiest of Internet grottos and give us the benefit of her incisive and cool-headed analysis. (And thank god too, because I’m sure as hell not doing it.) Amber A’Lee Frost, Chapo Trap House Angela Nagle is one of the few writers anywhere who has consistently refused to hold a double standard for virulent racism and misogyny even when it came in edgy countercultural packaging. Kill All Normies is a brilliant exposé of the new faces of online nihilism and fascism, which can no longer be explained away as doing it “for the lulz”. David Golumbia, Author of The Politics of Bitcoin: Software as Right- Wing Extremism With a liberal left dangerously lost in the stormy waters of middle class self-flagellation, Angela Nagle is the lighthouse keeper showing us the way out. Her writing is unsparing in its diagnosis but never cruel. Unlike much of the Left who’ve grown far too accustomed to marginalization and defeat, Nagle still believes in politics as the only way of changing an increasingly brutal world. She is the writer and social critic I’ve been waiting for.
