The overture to the opera is a wonderfully spirited Bedřich Smetana arr. Cory has developed a close relationship with Tom Hutchinson Principal Cornet Susan Thomas Solo Baritone the composer and this latest instalment will not disappoint. The Christopher Turner Solo Cornet Suite from Stabat Mater is a set of five movements from Jenkins’ Stephen Kane 2nd Baritone Darren Thomas Solo Cornet adaptation of the 13th Century Roman Catholic poem that meditates Christopher Thomas Solo Trombone Seamus Gallagher Solo Cornet on the suffering of Mary during the crucifixion. It features several of Gareth Robinson 2nd Trombone Richard Davies Repiano Cornet Cory’s soloists including Richard Davies, Tom Hutchinson and David Andrew Williams Bass Trombone Lisa Fitzgerald-Lombard 2nd Cornet Childs in the stunning second movement, Lament. The the soloists household familiarity of his name, however, must be attributed to his work in musical theatre, most famously, his adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the 1957 musical West Side Story, written in collaboration with the lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Two of the most popular numbers in the musical, America and Somewhere, have been superbly arranged by Eric Crees and the pairing of these two numbers demonstrates the excitement and emotional range of Bernstein’s masterpiece. Tom Hutchinson Joanne Childs Owen Farr Rule Britannia has long been a showcase solo for the euphonium, but in a new rendition by Dan Price it is the tenor horn that is featured in this set of virtuosi variations. The exceptionally talented Owen Farr takes us on a breathtaking ride through all the twists and turns given to Thomas Arne’s popular melody in this exciting take on an old favourite. Sometimes the simplest music can be the most beautiful, and that Christopher Thomas David Childs Richard Davies is certainly the case for the next piece of music, the traditional Irish Tune from County Derry, collected by Percy Grainger and arranged for brass band by Dennis Wright.
